The SF-26 is certainly not being pushed to its limits, but the first indications are overwhelmingly positive.

In terms of reliability, Ferrari have completed over 1000 laps in pre-season (across Barcelona and Bahrain) without any power unit problems.

No other engine manufacturer, even the highly favoured Mercedes, can say the same in 2026 so far. Moreover, Fred Vasseur’s team have shown glimpses of true innovation with certain aerodynamic choices on the SF-26 – and there is plenty of more up their sleeve.

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="b0c95bc04383cef69c6b47df872135cf" image-id="WmOB0TbHpPK4" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 6000px; aspect-ratio: 6000/4000;" ></smartframe-embed>

Ferrari firmly in the mix, more updates in the pipeline

Heading into pre-season testing, there was speculation about how the 2026 regulations could change the pecking order. The general expectation was that at least one of the front-runners would be caught off-guard.

Red Bull were often under the microscope in this respect, as doubts circulated about their first ever F1 engine.

Within a few weeks of testing, however, this narrative is under essentially under the water. All of the traditional top four teams – Mercedes, Red Bull, Ferrari and McLaren – are looking in good shape.

In terms of headline times, the big names have been regularly at the top of the timing sheets. Race simulations tell a similar story, with a difference of a few tenths per lap celebrating these heavyweights.

Focusing on Ferrari, the SF-26 is widely perceived as a top three car – with more optimistic analysts categorising the Italian package as a contender for victory when the season begins in Australia.

Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc have both set fastest laps with their 2026 challenger, but this is not the main reason for optimism surrounding the Maranello outfit.

The race simulations completed by the SF-26 have been noteworthy, both in terms of overall performance and tyre management.

Furthermore, the Ferrari engine is understood to be in solid shape. From a reliability perspective, the Italian power unit has been rock solid – something with the Scuderia’s customer teams Haas and Cadillac have been grateful for.

Beyond this, the Ferrari engine’s harvesting of electrical energy is understood to be very efficient.

The power unit’s synergy with the sustainable fuels provided by Shell is working well, despite some of the concerns over winter.

Of course, looking at the best laps set by each team can be misleading. Still, it is unlikely a coincidence that last year’s top four teams have remained the four fastest teams in Bahrain testing.

For Fred Vasseur’s team, however, their early performance is particularly notable. Likely more than any other team, the SF-26 have a few tricks up their sleeves for Bahrain. (cont. next page)

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="c78749ece7fd074ea5dc1889e7c53f0f" image-id="esme9oX5q2Qv" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 4800px; aspect-ratio: 4800/3200;" ></smartframe-embed>

Ferrari prepare substantial modifications

Nobody can be certain of fuel loads and engine modes in pre-season, but there are some known variables that point to Ferrari’s favour.

Team principal Fred Vasseur has been open about his preferred development strategy for 2026. The Frenchman has warned of the risks that come with being to bold too soon.

Due to budget cap constraints, teams are limited in what they can spend on upgrades and development. This means that, should any team find a nasty surprise with their performance, correcting mistakes will be costly.

Establishing an accurate correlation between the track and the factory has been a top priority for Ferrari.

The Maranello operation’s primary objective from these tests is to verify their understanding of these 2026 cars and – by extension – provide confidence for the upgrades already in the pipeline.

In short, Ferrari have learned from their infamous upgrades at the 2024 Spanish GP – which did not work as intended and derailed their mid-season development.

Returning to this year’s SF-26, the current package circulating on track is a relatively basic iteration. Whilst plenty of areas in the car are still noteworthy, this year’s Ferrari has not been fitted with some of its more aggressive components.

These more bold specifications are due to arrive in Melbourne, with the technical team in Maranello working to ensure they can pursue the first phase of their 2026 development without fears of any components backfiring.

Although all teams will bring updates this year, the SF-26 is likely to experience more changes than any other of the front-runners.

McLaren’s MCL40, for example, will undergo relatively few alterations between Bahrain testing and the first race in Australia.

The main takeaway is that, whilst all teams are keeping something in reserve, Ferrari have a lot of wriggle-room to fit potentially decisive updates. This makes the solidity of the SF-26’s current baseline all the more encouraging, when looking ahead to later in the season.

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="b0c95bc04383cef69c6b47df872135cf" image-id="WmOB4CL1ZQI5" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 6000px; aspect-ratio: 6000/4000;" ></smartframe-embed>

Vasseur insists on calm

All team principals, but especially those in charge of the big teams, have been playing the political game in Bahrain.

There has been extensive discussion on the Mercedes engine and its compression ratio, with rival manufacturers pushing for action from the FIA.

At present, there is a proposal for a new methodology to measure compression ratio at a higher temperature. If implemented (scheduled for after the summer break) this would prevent Mercedes from capitalising on their unique solution.

Putting this aside, team principals have consistently downplayed their own performance whilst praising their rivals. In this sense, they are all singing a similar tune.

Still, the comments made by Vasseur in his Bahrain media duties are worth taking note of. The 57-year-old has admitted that calculating the pecking order is extremely difficult at this stage.

Moreover, the Frenchman emphasises that the pecking order is due to evolve very quickly:

“I think it’s very very difficult to have a clear picture of performance. And I think the most important is that relative performance in Melbourne (round one) won’t be the picture at the end of the season.

“We have, all the teams on the grid, a new trend of development today. Which means it will be more based on the capacity of the teams to develop and bring parts quickly on track – than on the picture of performance in Melbourne.

“But I prefer to be in good shape in Melbourne!” Vasseur chuckled.

“Overall, so far, it’s still tight. I think this morning you had two cars in less than two hundredths of a second.

“And we have no clue about the engine, about the level of fuel. Tons of parameters that is making a much bigger difference than the two hundredths.”

For a team arguably facing more pressure than any other, Ferrari have been almost impeccable in Bahrain testing.
