However, there are still many unknowns – both in terms of reliability and pure performance.

Whilst these 2026 regulations present major challenges, the Ferrari hierarchy expects the team to secure big results.

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="c78749ece7fd074ea5dc1889e7c53f0f" image-id="esmen40FvQ6j" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 5519px; aspect-ratio: 5519/3679;" ></smartframe-embed>

A pivotal year for Ferrari’s trajectory

Lewis Hamilton’s arrival at Maranello was a blockbuster move with immense implications. Arguably the biggest message from this agreement was this – Ferrari want to win in the short-term.

Moving to sign the 7-time Champion under Mercedes‘ nose was a declaration of the Scuderia’s intent. Acquiring Hamilton’s services at this stage of his career was clearly directed at fighting for titles as soon as possible.

Because of this, last year’s disappointment puts additional pressure on Ferrari heading into 2026.

Ferrari Chairman John Elkann played an instrumental role in the negotiations with Hamilton. Team principal Fred Vasseur’s relationship with the British driver was also critical in convincing the 40-year-old to join.

However, for all the investment put into signing the #44 driver, there have been signs of frustration and impatience from the hierarchy about Ferrari’s results since assembling this all-star duo.

Most notably, John Elkann issued a series of fiery declarations at the end of 2025. These were the highlights from the Ferrari Chairman’s late-season message:

“If we look at our engineers, there is no doubt that the car has improved. If we look at the rest, it is not up to standard.

“We certainly have drivers who need to focus on driving and talk less. We still have important races ahead of us, and it’s not impossible to finish second.”

Both Hamilton and Leclerc deserve credit for diffusing the situation when asked about these quotes, offering the media a series of diplomatic responses. With the 2025 season nearing its conclusion, the intensity of the Championship race meant this story faded into the background.

Regardless, Elkann’s quotes are indicative of the sentiment at Ferrari.

It was only last summer that Fred Vasseur’s position as team principal was under scrutiny. Reports from Italian outlets suggested the Frenchman was at risk of being replaced without improved results.

These claims were dismissed when Vasseur extended his contract to continue leading the Scuderia’s operations. However, this contractual boost does not necessarily offer guarantees about his future – an increasingly common theme in F1.

The expectation in 2026 is for Ferrari to secure results and contend for the Championship. A failure to at least fight for the crown could instigate a series of swift and decisive changes to the team’s senior leadership – including the team principal.

Of course, these scenarios remain hypothetical until the season begins.

Still, the general consensus is that a poor start to the year would not be well received by Ferrari’s ownership – and excuses will be insufficient. (cont. on next page)

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="c78749ece7fd074ea5dc1889e7c53f0f" image-id="esmetBcRrnHq" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 5379px; aspect-ratio: 5379/3586;" ></smartframe-embed>

Leclerc and Hamilton’s future

Ferrari team principals are almost eternally pressure, such is the nature of leading Formula 1’s most historic team. Elsewhere, however, there are also big question marks at Maranello.

Charles Leclerc’s loyalty to the Scuderia has never been doubted, but make no mistake – the Monegasque wants to win world titles. Ideally, Leclerc would prefer to accomplish this with Ferrari – but if he does not believe Ferrari can contend in 2026, he will explore his options.

Leclerc’s manager, Nicholas Todt, gave these quotes at the end of last year:

“He’s not a baby anymore, because he has done a lot of seasons with Ferrari… we still need to have a winning car.”

These comments are the closest Leclerc’s camp has come to entertaining the possibility of leaving Ferrari. The overwhelming belief heading into 2026 is that it’s “now or never” for this driver-team combination to reach the summit.

Other teams are unsurprisingly interested in the 28-year-old, and this year’s driver market promises to have several vacancies.

For Lewis Hamilton, this year is also essential. 2026 is widely seen as a fresh start for the 7-time Champion, who stands to benefit from the change in regulations and having spent over a year integrating himself at Maranello.

The British driver has also been involved in the SF-26’s development, something he welcomes after spending most of 2025 at odds with his car.

With Hamilton entering his 40s, a poor start to the 2026 regulations could be catastrophic for his Ferrari timeline. In short, from the team’s senior management to driver line-up, a lot depends on the SF-26. (cont. on next page)

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="b0c95bc04383cef69c6b47df872135cf" image-id="WmOBT7itHCd3" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 6000px; aspect-ratio: 6000/4000;" ></smartframe-embed>

Mistakes of the past

Since becoming Ferrari team principal, Fred Vasseur has navigated the team through difficult spells.

After securing just one race win in 2023, Ferrari rallied to secure five victories in the following season. Vasseur’s team was within touching distance of the constructors title, narrowly missing out at the final race in Abu Dhabi.

Still, the 57-year-old received near unanimous approval after his first two campaigns in charge of the Maranello team. Unfortunately for the Frenchman, an underwhelming 2025 season has led to a sense of anxiousness and impatience returning.

The 2026 regulations were always going to be critical, but Ferrari’s absence from recent title fights has increased the pressure heading into this season.

Ironically, the changes Vasseur has implemented at Ferrari will only start being truly felt. The SF-26, for example, is the first car that Technical Director Loic Serra has completely overseen throughout its development.

Other changes to the team’s organisational structure, ushered in by Vasseur, will only take effect in 2026. In this sense, even a poor season does not necessarily invalidate all the work Ferrari has done behind the scenes.

More generally speaking, any changes to the Scuderia’s leadership could trigger another lengthy rebuild and period of introspection. The last decade would suggest this is ultimately a counter-productive course of action.

However, the dynamics surrounding the Maranello team appear increasingly black and white. Only an SF-26 capable of winning races can safeguard Ferrari from a potentially volatile twelve months.

Main photo: Scuderia Ferrari Media Gallery

Ferrari were one of the most productive teams in last week’s Barcelona action, accumulating over 400 laps with the SF-26.
