The 67-year-old’s reputation speaks for itself, and the AMR26 introduced in Barcelona was undeniably moulded by his vision.

Rival engineers have consistently pointed to the unique innovations on the AMR26 over recent days. Whilst other teams such as Mercedes or Ferrari had extremely productive tests, Aston’s package generated more attention than any other.

Despite all this, one critical variable in this year’s equation is consistently overlooked. In recent declarations, Adrian Newey outlined one of the forgotten game-changers for F1 2026.

Adrian Newey in Lusail City, Qatar. (Photo by Zak Mauger/LAT Images)

Newey and Aston Martin work against the clock

There are few who doubts the engineering competence of Aston Martin under Adrian Newey’s watch. Alongside other senior personnel such as Enrico Cardile, Lawrence Stroll’s team is expected to deliver a strong car.

First impressions of the AMR26 suggest that Newey and Cardile are fully committed to exploiting the regulations in the most creative way possible.

However, there are still doubts about the Honda engine. The Japanese manufacturer has achieved plenty of title success with Red Bull in recent years, so their ability to produce a top engine is clear.

Still, Honda officially committed to the 2026 regulations in early 2023 – some time later than the other manufacturers.

Because of this, there are lingering concerns about how effective the Japanese engine will be. It is understood Honda have taken some risks over the last year to try and make up for lost time.

In conjunction with the power unit, another vital factor in 2026 will be sustainable fuels.

To give some context into the challenge of synergising these new sustainable carbon-neutral fuels, the FIA gave teams an exemption for last week’s Barcelona shakedown. This means teams were allowed to use last year’s fuels – since some suppliers are struggling with research and production.

Of course, starting from next week’s tests in Bahrain, using carbon-neutral fuels will be mandated by the regulations.

This is why the nervousness of some teams prior to the Barcelona shakedown (prompting the FIA’s exemption) is so relevant. For many teams, last week’s strong reliability could change dramatically when they actually use the 2026 sustainable fuels.

The question is which teams used the new fuels in Barcelona – and which ones opted to play it safe and focus on aerodynamic work with last year’s fuel.

LWOS has previously discussed the importance Aston Martin’s fuel supplier – Aramco. The partnership between manufacturer and fuel supplier has always been important, but even more so in 2026.

For Aston Martin specifically, their relationship with Aramco could give them a valuable advantage. Meanwhile, certain teams are still very anxious about their sustainable fuels. (cont. on next page)

Fernando Alonso of Aston Martin F1 Team on the grid. (Photo by Zak Mauger/LAT Images)

Newey emphasises sustainable fuels

Different suppliers work with different teams, meaning the research process for sustainable fuels is a development war in itself. Some suppliers will have more experience and competence in developing carbon-neutral energy than others.

In this respect, Aramco have an advantage. Aramco has been Formula 2’s fuel supplier over the last few seasons – and in 2025 they provided the Championship with 100% sustainable fuels.

This means Aston Martin’s energy partner is extremely well-versed in developing the fuels required for 2026.

The complexity of the new 2026 engines means that interaction with the sustainable fuels could have a massive impact on performance. As it stands, fuel is one of the biggest unknowns for the upcoming season.

With this knowledge, Aston Martin and Honda have worked tirelessly on their fuel mix. This could be the reason why Aston were very conservative in their only full day of running in Barcelona.

It is plausible that, unlike some other cars, the AMR26 was already running on 2026 fuels.

As a result, despite limited track time, the Silverstone operation could have learned a great deal at the shakedown – indeed, more than their rivals.

On paper, completing hundreds of laps in a test is positive for data collection. However, the teams who weren’t running the 2026 fuels will not have a realistic picture of their packages.

After all, the main question mark for 2026 – in terms of reliability and performance – is the engine. Using old fuels in Barcelona meant that some teams essentially avoided one of the most important aspects of the new regulations.

Meanwhile, Adrian Newey believes the team’s work on this area could pay dividends:

“One of the key aspects of this year’s regulations is the new power units, and with that comes the move to using fully sustainable fuel for the first time in Formula 1.

“Aramco are absolutely pivotal for us here because of how they develop fuel. As are Valvoline, which is developing the oil, to suit the work Honda is doing and are a big part of a very complicated, but very important, equation.

“Without having a technical partner and fuel supplier with Aramco’s expertise, Honda’s development of the power unit would be restricted.

“And that, in turn, would restrict us. The work Aramco are doing is going to stand us in very good stead.” (cont. on next page)

Fernando Alonso in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. (Photo by Sam Bloxham/LAT Images)

Sustainable fuels still the biggest unknown

Since fuel mixes have not been a significant factor in recent years, their influence in 2026 can be easily overlooked.

However, it cannot be stressed enough how important this domain will be for these regulations. Engineers across the paddock have identified the fuel front as a key battleground.

Much of the unexpectedly smooth running at the Barcelona shakedown could be attributed to teams using last year’s fuel.

In Bahrain, the use of the new 2026 fuels could significant impact reliability for certain teams. This means next week’s running in Sakhir will be the first indication of how teams and suppliers have developed this area.

For Aston Martin, specifically, their partnership with Aramco is instrumental. As outlined previously, the British team are putting together pieces of the puzzle in a short time frame.

Newey’s arrival, Honda’s engine agreement and the construction of new facilities all happened slightly later than Aston would have preferred. By contrast, Aramco have a wealth of experience to tap into for development and research into carbon-neutral fuel.

If the Aramco fuel interacts effectively with the Honda engine, it could compensate for potential losses in overall horsepower to the Mercedes power unit.

With the first tests in Bahrain only a week away, there will soon be nowhere to hide. Aston Martin have plenty of doubts and questions surrounding their 2026 project and the AMR26.

Simultaneously, there is also immense intrigue about their prospects. The upcoming tests, therefore, are a chance for Aston to prove where they truly stand.

Main photo: Zak Mauger/LAT Images (Aston Martin F1 Media Portal)

Aston Martin were always going to receive an elevated level of attention after Adrian Newey’s arrival.
