The AMR26 immediately attracted attention from rival teams after its highly anticipated 2026 debut.

As a general rule, any car designed by Adrian Newey is going to generate headlines. A new set of regulations provides Newey with even more flexibility to interpret the rules and create something distinct from other teams.

Indeed, the AMR26 is nothing like that of its rivals – and these more extreme concepts are going to be further expanded upon.

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="c78749ece7fd074ea5dc1889e7c53f0f" image-id="esmeSbeK9pMJ" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 5247px; aspect-ratio: 5247/3498;" ></smartframe-embed>

Aston Martin capitalise on Honda partnership

A multitude of factors meant that Aston Martin’s debut in Barcelona was delayed. First and foremost, Aston’s time-squeeze was caused by some relatively late modifications to the AMR26.

Since joining the team last Spring, Newey has been working hard on this year’s car. However, whilst the 67-year-old has overseen this car in its entirety, his integration into the British team was slightly later than he would have preferred.

Ideally, Newey would have started at Aston Martin before 2025 – thereby giving him more time to direct the team’s development and refine their processes.

Still, the former Red Bull engineer has implemented a series of bold changes over the last 10 months. These were instantly recognised when the AMR26 took to the track in Barcelona.

One of the most notable characteristics of Newey’s 2026 challenger was its compact nature. Not for the first time, Newey pushed for a tight design – particularly at the rear of the car.

This is something he accomplished in close collaboration with Honda. One of the advantages of Aston Martin’s Honda deal is that, effectively, they can behave like a manufacturer.

Unlike customer teams, Aston Martin have complete freedom in their entire design process. Newey and other senior figures like Enrico Cardile have capitalised on this – specifically requesting a compact power unit from the Japanese manufacturer.

LWOS previously reported on this, with Honda’s engine production working hand-in-hand with certain mechanical decisions made by Aston’s technical team.

In many ways, Newey’s presence and Honda’s participation created the ideal conditions for Aston Martin to present such a daring machine.

For all teams, the cars introduced in the Barcelona shakedown were only a starting point. Further modifications are inevitable, with upgrades due across the field for the upcoming Bahrain tests.

However, looking specifically at Aston Martin’s case, 2026 could see a particularly steep development curve. (cont. on next page)

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="c78749ece7fd074ea5dc1889e7c53f0f" image-id="esmerj5s0z7z" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 4331px; aspect-ratio: 4331/2887;" ></smartframe-embed>

A platform for further development

The 2024 and 2025 seasons, despite being several years into the ground-effect era, saw plenty of mid-season evolution.

Between McLaren, Red Bull and Ferrari, various upgrade packages changed the pecking order.

For McLaren, setting a solid foundation created a platform that allowed them to improve more rapidly than rivals. Others, such as Red Bull, boxed themselves in to a corner – requiring their engineers to do a lot of introspection.

Because of this, Aston Martin have committed to a series of unique macro solutions. The AMR26’s front and rear suspension, engine cover, sidepods and cooling ventilators are all the product of bold decisions.

To the eyes of some observers, the AMR26 is so adventurous that other teams could take until 2027 to adopt similar ideas. Of course, rivals will only emulate these ideas if Aston’s 2026 challenger is competitive.

Even them, teams need to understand their own cars before seriously considering the solutions adopted by others.

Regardless, this encapsulates the ‘no risk no reward’ approach that Aston have taken. They are committed to an unorthodox concept that, for better or worse, will make their path to round one in Australia unique.

Should the car fail to perform, it could take the British team a long time to recover. If their platform proves beneficial, however, they will have a big advantage and – more importantly – plenty of scope for upgrades.

With this in mind, the AMR26 shown in Barcelona – whilst radical – is only the beginning of a very daring concept. The boldness of Newey’s vision has only just begun, meaning refinements are incoming. (cont. on next page)

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="c78749ece7fd074ea5dc1889e7c53f0f" image-id="esmef2JAAfdI" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 4800px; aspect-ratio: 4800/2906;" ></smartframe-embed>

This is partly why Aston decided against completing a 200km filming day on Saturday after the Barcelona shakedown. Initially, the team were expected to stay in Barcelona for an additional day and partially compensate for their late start.

However, it is understood that Aston are prioritising the production of more upgrades in the factory. Weight-saving measures could also be implemented in the coming weeks, to make the AMR26 lighter.

In short, the rush to get the AMR26 ready for Barcelona was necessary to test for accurate correlation data between the circuit and factory. When Aston arrive to Bahrain testing, it will be with a greater understanding of how to advance their ideas.

Can Newey put the puzzle together?

As ever, the big questions surrounding the Aston Martin project are not about the long-term.

Aston Martin have invested heavily in their infrastructure and development facilities. Adrian Newey, Enrico Cardile and Andy Cowell form a highly accomplished senior group – the product of Lawrence Stroll’s relentless ambition.

On the engine, front Honda have already powered Red Bull to numerous Championships. Their new engine is in doubt is because of their delays and overall hesitance in committing to the 2026 regulations.

In the long-term, Honda’s engine department is more than competent enough to overcome any deficit.

Still, for someone like Fernando Alonso, time is of the essence. As previously explained, Aston could pay a hefty price if this unorthodox approach to the AMR26 backfires.

This means, for the time being, the British team must trust in the decisions overseen by Adrian Newey. Their success in 2026 will depend on it.

Aston Martin arrived late to the Barcelona shakedown, but this didn’t stop them from sparking conversation.
