Heading into an era-defining 2026, the Italian squad find themselves under immense scrutiny.

Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton, despite being at different stages of their careers, are eager for a title-winning machine. If Ferrari the SF-26 fails to deliver, it will be difficult for the Scuderia to keep their superstar line-up.

In this context, Ferrari are satisfied with how smoothly their Barcelona shakedown went – although a significant batch of necessary upgrades are pending approval.

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="c78749ece7fd074ea5dc1889e7c53f0f" image-id="esme2drRfrM7" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 6000px; aspect-ratio: 6000/4000;" ></smartframe-embed>

Smooth Barcelona shakedown, crucial weeks ahead

Although Ferrari typically dominate headlines over the winter, Mercedes became the big talking point from the Barcelona shakedown.

The Silver Arrows completed more laps than anyone else in Catalunya, with the W17 going through three days of running almost faultlessly. Mercedes also enjoyed bulletproof reliability in their Silverstone debut, where the W17 immediately did a full race distance.

In combination with rumours about their power unit, Toto Wolff’s team find themselves as early favourites in the minds of many.

Of course, this does not mean Ferrari are being overlooked. Lewis Hamilton ended this week’s Barcelona running with the fastest time of anyone, setting a 1:16.348 on the soft tyre.

The SF-26 also managed well over 400 laps, facing hardly any reliability hiccups in the process. This is particularly relevant for the Ferrari engine, considering some of the concerns about reliability circulating in pre-season.

Ferrari have taken some relatively unorthodox solutions with their power unit, including the use of a steel alloy. Although nothing can be confirmed at this stage, the Scuderia are pleased to have avoided any major obstacles.

Other Ferrari-powered teams, most notably Haas, also experienced very strong durability. With the US team accumulating more laps than most teams in Barcelona, Fred Vasseur’s team have plenty of data to get their teeth into.

However, the reason why Ferrari’s rock solid mileage is so relevant is because of their pre-season approach.

A series of significant modifications are scheduled for the SF-26, which could have a transformative effect on their 2026 season… (cont. on next page).

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="b0c95bc04383cef69c6b47df872135cf" image-id="WmOBw8rvf06R" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 5053px; aspect-ratio: 5053/3369;" ></smartframe-embed>

Making more aggressive changes

Several weeks before 2026 began, Vasseur outlined his perspective on 2026. The Ferrari team principal emphasised that the pecking order at round one in Australia is inevitably going to evolve throughout the year.

He also explained the importance of not going through your development funds too early. According to the Frenchman, a more sensible approach is to make gradual improvements as you better understand these 2026 cars.

After all, with the budget cap restricting spending, teams will pay a high price for any upgrades that don’t work effectively.

Perhaps because of this, Ferrari brought a relatively ‘safe’ package to Barcelona this week. Unlike some other teams, such as Aston Martin or McLaren, the Maranello squad were relatively conservative.

Inevitably, the SF-26 still included some important ideas that will feature in 2026. However, the Italian car introduced in Spain was by no means the most ambitious on the field.

In many ways, this is consistent with Fred Vasseur’s stated philosophy. Ferrari chose to take a more cautious approach in Barcelona. Broadly speaking, their objective was to analyse the SF-26’s initial data and assess the next steps.

Of course, this does not mean that new components or upgrades will be conceived between now and the first tests in Bahrain – which are less than two weeks away.

Instead, Ferrari hope to confirm the upgrades already in the pipeline will work as intended.

Therefore, the engineers in Maranello now look to confirm if their development trajectory – at least in its early stages – can be pursued without any unforeseen complications.

On paper, the Italian outfit can be satisfied with the SF-26’s first taste of serious track time. Simultaneously, because Ferrari went relatively ‘safe’ with their first package, more concrete indications will only begin to emerge in Bahrain. (cont. on next page)

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="c78749ece7fd074ea5dc1889e7c53f0f" image-id="esme9yjiPLdO" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 4840px; aspect-ratio: 4840/3227;" ></smartframe-embed>

Unknowns remain

Fundamentally, there are several unknowns that complicate any conclusive analysis from this week’s action in Spain.

First and foremost, the basics of testing – such as varying fuel loads and settings – makes comparing lap-times a fruitless exercise. Only towards the end of the Bahrain tests will teams begin pushing their cars on lower fuel and higher engine modes.

Even then, the first qualifying in Australia will be the first truly revealing data point.

Teams are still in the process of understanding how to optimise set-up, energy management and decide what direction to take the car.

This is partly why Mercedes can be described as winners from the Barcelona action. By their final day of running, the German squad were already focused on set-up work and fine-tuning the W17, something that isn’t usually achieved so early.

Another obvious question mark concerns the fuels used this week. Although teams are required to use sustainable fuels in 2026, the FIA granted an exemption for the Barcelona shakedown.

Of course, it is unknown which teams were already using sustainable fuels, and which ones were still running the older fuel mixes.

In some ways, this means the Bahrain tests could expose reliability issues that were obscured in Barcelona.

For Ferrari, the next few weeks are critical. They are now forced to make big decisions on the SF-26 and how aggressive their 2026 package will be.

This is not to say other teams are not facing a similar dilemma. However, it must be said Ferrari were arguably the most conservative of the front-runners in the Shakedown.

Now is the time for Vasseur’s personnel to prove if they are capable of pioneering potentially game-changing ideas with these cars.

Even during pre-season, Ferrari are constantly burdened by the pressure of great expectations.
