Having explicitly abandoned last year&#8217;s development to focus on the new regulations, most analysts anticipated Williams could climb the field.<\/p>\n<p>To reinforce this consensus, team principal <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2025\/12\/27\/vowles-says-rival-trying-to-create-narrative-about-mercedes-engines\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\">James Vowles<\/a> spoke with confidence about the FW48&#8217;s assembly as recently as December. The British squad planned to meet their main deadlines and arrive for the Barcelona shakedown.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, the team&#8217;s failure to be ready for this week&#8217;s running Barcelona has changed these assumptions. According to Vowles, missing the action in Catalunya was the correct decision under tough circumstances.<\/p>\n<p class=\"aligncenter\"><p class=\"aligncenter\" style=\"max-width: 600px\"><smartframe-embed class=\"smartframe_wp_element\" customer-id=\"b0c95bc04383cef69c6b47df872135cf\" image-id=\"WmOBU4E7yYxp\" style=\"width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 4498px; aspect-ratio: 4498\/3000;\" ><\/smartframe-embed><\/p><\/p>\n<h2>Vowles admits &#8220;painful&#8221; setbacks for Williams<\/h2>\n<p>Delays are not necessarily unusual during pre-season testing, especially amidst a major regulation change. With that said, Williams are already several steps behind the rest of the field in terms of mileage.<\/p>\n<p>The only other team yet to complete a lap in Barcelona is <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2026\/01\/26\/aston-martin-in-a-race-against-time-ahead-of-barcelona-testing\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\">Aston Martin<\/a>. However, even with certain delays, the Silverstone-based operation expect to begin running with the AMR26 tomorrow.<\/p>\n<p>Assuming <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2026\/01\/27\/f1-adrian-newey-shapes-brave-honda-engine-design\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\">Aston&#8217;s 2026 challenger<\/a> avoids any huge complications, they should still collect considerable data this week.<\/p>\n<p>Over at Williams, there has been significant speculation about the causes of their absence from the Barcelona action. Team principal James Vowles has addressed the issue:<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;Last week we took the decision to not attend the Shakedown test in Barcelona, following delays to our car programme. This clearly wasn&#8217;t our original plan, it was painful, and it isn&#8217;t a situation we want to be in again.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;We had intended to be on track in Barcelona. It is a result of our determination to push the limits of performance under these new regulations in 2026.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;We are transforming fast, but this shows&#8230; we&#8217;re not yet at a Championship level, and we still have a tremendous amount of work to do. Only by pushing the boundaries can you find the pain points, and put them right &#8211; which is exactly what we&#8217;re doing.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;I&#8217;m not here to produce a car that is well and truly within the tolerances. We have to push ourselves as a business to breaking point, and we&#8217;ve done so. It&#8217;s painful, but it means we will never be here again.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"aligncenter\"><p class=\"aligncenter\" style=\"max-width: 600px\"><smartframe-embed class=\"smartframe_wp_element\" customer-id=\"c78749ece7fd074ea5dc1889e7c53f0f\" image-id=\"esmeU2NPhft6\" style=\"width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 4800px; aspect-ratio: 4800\/3200;\" ><\/smartframe-embed><\/p><\/p>\n<h4>Williams aim to compensate for slow start<\/h4>\n<p>On paper, missing out on Barcelona running does not automatically doom Williams&#8217; 2026 campaign. Teams have missed tests before and still manage to produce competitive packages.<\/p>\n<p>With that said, there are far more examples of teams arriving late to <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2026\/01\/24\/alpine-optimistic-about-reliability-after-first-2026-shakedown\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\">testing<\/a> and having very difficult seasons. This is a scenario Williams insist is not set in stone.<\/p>\n<p>Vowles argues that pushing the limits of the FW48 has contributed to their delayed start. When the first round commences in Australia, the 46-year-old will hope that a lack of track time does not become a limiting factor.<\/p>\n<p>This is why the tests in Bahrain are now absolutely essential.<\/p>\n<p>Until the FW48 makes its track debut in Sakhir, Vowles makes clear Williams will be hard at work:<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;I am confident that our decision not to attend Barcelona was the right one, in the circumstances. It&#8217;s the right one to prepare for the first official test in Bahrain, and the first race in Melbourne.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;Could we have pushed all out to be at Barcelona at all costs? Yes. But we would have compromised the rest of pre-season and the bigger picture we&#8217;re all walking towards.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;To explain the situation, we had a number of issues which are now resolved. I&#8217;m pleased to say that we have passed all necessary tests, and for the avoidance of doubt, there has never been a problem with our chassis tests &#8211; which were passed many weeks ago.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;We are ready to run in the official test in Bahrain, and will carry out a commercial filming day ahead of it. In the meantime, we are carrying out an alternative test programme here in the UK &#8211; including what we call a VTT, a Virtual Track Test.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;The car is on there now, it&#8217;s been there a few days, and it will be on there a few more days. It&#8217;s a physical car &#8211; the real car, the engine, the gearbox are all bolted to it.
