After all, team principal James Vowles has spent the last twelve months speaking about his decision to start work on the 2026 cars as early as possible.

In fairness to Williams, they still managed to finish 5th last season (their best result since 2017) despite prioritising the new regulations. This is partly why, with full focus on 2026, they were expected to make an impact.

However, failed FIA crash tests have forced the British squad to abandon the first week of pre-season in Barcelona.

This automatically puts Williams at a disadvantage to other teams, who will accumulate three days of data to analyse and use to refine their 2026 packages. More concerningly, Williams could pay a greater long-term price for their mismanagement.

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="c78749ece7fd074ea5dc1889e7c53f0f" image-id="esmeyFCn3i6o" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 5583px; aspect-ratio: 5583/3722;" ></smartframe-embed>

Williams already on the defensive

Although pre-season mishaps are never ideal, the conditions surrounding this Williams blunder make their failure especially unforgivable.

Their strategy for the last eighteen months has been to put all available resources into the 2026 cars. This time last year, Williams were already dedicating the majority of their wind tunnel hours to the new regulations.

A lack of upgrades to last year’s FW47 was justified by the importance of starting 2026 on the front-foot. At the time, this philosophy was deemed a sensible one for a midfield team aspiring to climb the field.

Of course, the fact Williams won’t even be present in the Barcelona test suggests there has been a severe miscalculation. Explaining this error is very difficult, given how many eggs the team put in the ’26 basket.

It was only two years ago that Williams experienced various hiccups in the build-up to 2024. Even then, the justification offered by James Vowles was that changes were being made to this year’s architecture in order to operate more like a top-team.

With all this context in mind, the British team are understandably being questioned for how they reached this stage.

The most likely reason for Williams being in this position is a severe oversight in the design of the FW48’s architecture. Making corrections will take time, although arriving to Bahrain testing is still the plan.

However, there is a bigger issue that James Vowles’ personnel could be facing in 2026 (cont. on next page).

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="b0c95bc04383cef69c6b47df872135cf" image-id="WmOBqsmr8K0W" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 6960px; aspect-ratio: 6960/4640;" ></smartframe-embed>

Williams could feel the squeeze from the budget cap

Ferrari team principal Fred Vasseur was in attendance at the SF-26’s launch in Fiorano. The Italian outfit went through the first laps of their 2026 challenger without any problems, and are preparing for next week’s running in Spain.

As previously reported on LWOS, Ferrari are bringing two different specifications of the SF-26 for Barcelona testing. This will allow for some comparative tests, which swill inform the Scuderia’s development further ahead of the first race in Australia.

A few weeks before yesterday’s Fiorano shakedown, Vasseur spoke about one of the pitfalls that teams could fall victim to in 2026.

The Frenchman explained that some teams might be tempted to develop very aggressively at the beginning of the year. However, this could be a mistake – since the budget cap will limit how many upgrades can be introduced.

Because of this, the more sensible approach could be to have a bit of patience to start the season – collecting more data and getting a clearer understanding of these new cars before rushing to bring upgrades that might not work as intended.

The budget cap is relevant for Williams because, as it stands, they are already wasting valuable resources.

For Williams to miss completely on Barcelona testing suggests a significant problem. A minor problem or delay could have meant they perhaps missed the first few days of running. Still, it would have been possible to at least participate on the final few days.

Unfortunately for Williams, their predicament seems anything but minor – with a massive overhaul needed to get the FW48 in compliance with the regulations and capable of passing the FIA crash tests.

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="b0c95bc04383cef69c6b47df872135cf" image-id="WmOBhfCgXPqx" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 6024px; aspect-ratio: 6024/4016;" ></smartframe-embed>

Looking at the 2026 from a more big-picture perspective, this could be a big problem. Funds that would have been allocated towards developing the first batch of upgrades are instead being used to redesign the car’s fundamental architecture.

Moreover, developments that might have been planned for the first few rounds will need to be re-evaluated. In a worst-case scenario, Williams could be forced to completely alter their plans for the FW48.

This will be costly, limiting the amount of money the team can expend on development. Moreover, because they finished 5th in last year’s constructors standings, they have less wind tunnel hours to play with than in previous years.

As a result, the Grove-based operation could be in considerable trouble.

Should they get the FW48 into reasonable shape for the Bahrain tests, they will still be lagging behind. To make matters worse, any reliability issues would be far more detrimental at Williams than other teams.

In short, there is virtually no margin for error.

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="c78749ece7fd074ea5dc1889e7c53f0f" image-id="esme6WgjUzws" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 5709px; aspect-ratio: 5709/3806;" ></smartframe-embed>

Limited running time for Sainz and Albon

Another important consideration is the impact these delays will have on Carlos Sainz and Alex Albon.

These 2026 cars are an entirely new proposition to the challengers that proceeded them. Purely from a handling perspective, there are obvious and significant differences.

However, arguably the bigger change is the amount of management and harvesting these cars require. Drivers must fundamentally change how they approach this season – especially in race trim.

Understanding how to efficiently save and deploy energy, whilst also giving accurate feedback, is a big challenge for the entire field.

This is why every team has at least one experienced driver in their ranks for 2026. Cadillac’s decision to sign two seasoned veterans was influenced by the volume of new information drivers will have to digest.

Of course, the Williams duo will be a few steps behind their colleagues.

To some degree, time in the simulator and VTT (Virtual Track Test) running can offset reduced track time. Still, much like on the development side, nothing is a substitute for actual running.

Overall, this means Williams are confronted with a multi-faceted dilemma to start 2026. The next few weeks therefore represent a huge and possible decisive period for their start to these regulations.

Main photo: Williams Racing Media Gallery

Before it was announced Williams would entirely miss Barcelona testing, they were seen as dark horses for the 2026 season.
