It was only in December that James Vowles<\/a> spoke in glowing terms about the progress being made towards 2026. The Williams team principal even emphasised his squad “don’t want to be caught off guard again”<\/em> like in previous years.<\/p>\n

Vowles spent much of last year repeating the same point about the new regulations. The British engineer was more vocal than anyone about abandoning last year’s development in order to focus on 2026<\/a>.<\/p>\n

For all intents and purposes, the Grove-based team started working on the new generation of cars before anyone else. This is why it comes as such a shock that Williams will miss the entire first week of testing in Barcelona.<\/p>\n

Williams announce delays to FW48 development<\/h2>\n

Since the beginning of 2026, teams have gradually completed their first shakedowns with their new cars. Even Cadillac, who enter their debut season, successfully got some kilometres under their belt at their filming day in Silverstone.<\/p>\n

Albeit with a relatively basic iteration of their 2026 challenger, the US outfit still checked off this important step.<\/p>\n

Mercedes<\/a>, Ferrari<\/a>, VCARB, Alpine and Audi<\/a> have also officially made their debuts. In stark contrast, Williams face a massive problem that prevents them from participating in next week’s tests.<\/p>\n

The British team are understood to have failed the FIA’s crash tests. Their 2026 car, which (like all teams) must pass the federation’s safety requirements has yet to receive the green light.<\/p>\n

It is not necessarily unusual for teams to initially fail crash tests. Red Bull<\/a> are famous for failing their first tests, as they push the very limits of their design, before making adjustments to meet the required parameters.<\/p>\n

However, this process is usually completed weeks before testing commences. For Williams to be unable to attend even a single day of next week’s Barcelona running suggests a fundamental issue.<\/p>\n

Williams issued the following statement on this matter:<\/p>\n

“Atlassian Williams F1 Team has taken the decision not to participate in next week\u2019s shakedown test in Barcelona following delays in the FW48 programme as we continue to push for maximum car performance.<\/em><\/p>\n

“The team will instead conduct a series of tests including a VTT programme next week with the 2026 car to prepare for the first official test in Bahrain and the first race of the season in Melbourne.<\/em><\/p>\n

“We are looking forward to getting on track in the coming weeks and want to thank all our fans for your continued support – there is a lot to look forward to together in 2026.”<\/em><\/p>\n

Adapting to a new reality<\/h4>\n

As previously touched upon, James Vowles’ comments in December indicated that Williams believed they were ahead of schedule. The former Mercedes strategist even suggested Williams would have an advantage over last year’s top teams, who were embroiled in a title race.<\/p>\n

Evidently, these enthusiastic forecasts seem a thing of the past. This is not to say Williams are incapable of recovering from this blunder.<\/p>\n

However, history suggests this delay foreshadows further complications. The last time Williams were late to testing, in 2019, they suffered arguably their worst season in F1 history.<\/p>\n

Although the 2026 regulations present opportunities to develop aggressively<\/a>, this is dependent on getting the fundamentals right. This is why some teams are opting to begin testing with relatively basic iterations of their 2026 cars.<\/p>\n

At least for now, Williams will not be bringing any iteration of this year’s FW48 to track.<\/p>\n

One can only imagine the situation at the factory in Grove, which will be in a race against time to avoid missing out on the tests in Bahrain.<\/p>\n
