From traditional front-runners to plucky underdogs, the new regulations present risk and opportunity.

With that said, Ferrari are no doubt in a unique position – even among the other big teams. For one, the Maranello team have gone almost two decades without title success – substantially longer than McLaren, Red Bull and Mercedes.

More pressingly, their driver pairing of Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton (despite being at different stages of their career) are equally impatient for a title-contending car. Should Ferrari want to keep their all-star duo, they must deliver.

Conscious of this background, team principal Fred Vasseur has a clear plan – both for on and off-track.

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="b0c95bc04383cef69c6b47df872135cf" image-id="WmOBiEmtn032" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 6652px; aspect-ratio: 6652/4437;" ></smartframe-embed>

Ferrari prepare two different cars for Barcelona testing

Perhaps for the first time in recent seasons, Ferrari have not generated the most attention during the winter break. On this occasion, it is Mercedes who have been under the microscope as the 2026 regulations come closer.

In the immediate aftermath of last season, there was already a narrative about the 2026 Mercedes engines being the safest choice. This belief has only been strengthened and cemented in the weeks leading up to pre-season testing.

Still, this does not mean others have failed to attract attention. Red Bull’s engine, for example, is one of the big question marks as the new season approaches.

The Austrian team’s work on the compression ratio trick being used at Mercedes, among other things, has sparked optimism that Red Bull’s first campaign as a manufacturer could be better than first imagined.

Of course, team principal Laurent Mekies still emphasises the need for caution and realistic expectations. Red Bull still anticipate an uphill battle, particularly against Mercedes, in the coming months.

At Ferrari, there have been a few whispers and murmurs over the winter. There have been a combination of positive and negative reports about the Scuderia, creating an unclear picture about their progress.

However, there are some relatively well-established facts. The first is that Ferrari are going bold for 2026, and this applies for both their aerodynamic package and engine design.

Focusing on aerodynamics and concept design, the Scuderia are scheduled to bring two vastly different specifications to testing. One of their cars will run a basic version of the SF-26, serving as a baseline to confirm certain parameters and assumptions.

Simultaneously, Ferrari are also working on a more sophisticated and advanced SF-26 spec. This version will feature some of the braver ideas Maranello have developed for these new regulations, and therefore brings many unknowns.

Still, the aim for the Italian outfit is to hit two birds with one stone in pre-season. With more teams than ever capable of delivering a top package, playing it safe is the biggest risk heading into 2026.

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="c78749ece7fd074ea5dc1889e7c53f0f" image-id="esmeUcrhsmOJ" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 4658px; aspect-ratio: 4658/3105;" ></smartframe-embed>

A radical approach for engine and aerodynamics

Fred Vasseur has made no secret of his outlook on the upcoming season, especially the first few months. There are great volume of ideas coming from the factory in Maranello.

Some of these concepts and designs are in the final stages of production and will be fitted to the SF-26 next week in testing. It must be stressed that collecting data on a combination of basic and sophisticated components is of the upmost importance.

Beyond this, Ferrari also have several upgrades in the pipeline. These are scheduled to arrive after the first races of the season, though this will be contingent on how accurately the data from the factory correlates to the circuit.

Regardless, the philosophy at Ferrari is to develop aggressively in the opening rounds of 2026. This means the SF-26 should see a rapid evolution in a relatively small time period, with the intention of quickly getting to grips with the fundamentals of these new cars.

Because of this, Fred Vasseur is not overly concerned with the team’s position at the season opener in Australia. The Frenchman has warned that spending too much of your budget cap at the beginning of the year will limited a team’s ability to adapt later in the season.

This is why Ferrari have already planned a few steps ahead for their first upgrade sequence of 2026 – whilst also keeping funds and wind tunnel hours in reserve to respond and react to the first sensations from pre-season testing.

As a manufacturer team, Ferrari’s power unit is another essential piece of the puzzle. Excluding a dramatic surprise, the engine to beat should be Mercedes. This is something on which drivers, engineers and analysts are aligned.

Haas team principal Ayao Komatsu is the latest senior figure to predict the Silver Arrows will have the best power unit.

To have any chance of fighting for the Championship, Ferrari’s engine must at least be within touching distance of Mercedes. Not only is this essential to combat Mercedes, but also their customer teams – including McLaren and Williams.

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="c78749ece7fd074ea5dc1889e7c53f0f" image-id="esmeoFgDuFGM" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 5393px; aspect-ratio: 5393/3595;" ></smartframe-embed>

Ferrary happy to take risks

According to reports over the winter break, Ferrari are pushing the limits with their power unit. The first notable divergence from Maranello is their decision to use a steel alloy for their cylinder heads, in contrast to other manufacturers who traditionally use aluminium.

The Italian team’s technical department believes this decision will lead to a more reliable engine. This is important for every engine, but especially in the context of some of the headaches Ferrari have been dealing with in the build-up to 2026.

In many ways, some of the decisions taken by Vasseur’s team create a lot of uncertainty for the upcoming seasons. Conflicting reports on certain fronts also throw a spanner in the works when dissecting Ferrari’s prospects.

Putting aside some of the inevitable contradictory information that emerges during the winter break, the Scuderia are also taking a unique path compared to others.

LWOS has previously discussed the importance of fuel suppliers for 2026. Different teams receive their fuel from different suppliers, collaborating closely to meet the requirements for sustainable fuels.

The regulations allow for suppliers to develop their own unique methods to develop the mandatory C02-neutral fuel. This creates another area for teams to optimise their engines more efficiency.

Once again, this is a department where Ferrari have reportedly gone for a specialised approach. Shell, the Scuderia’s fuel partner, is understood to be developing a bio-fuel to achieve F1’s sustainable requirement. Other suppliers are opting for a more conventional path, synthetic fuel, to reach this objective.

When putting together all these variables, it will be both tricky and intriguing to pinpoint Ferrari’s competitiveness as the 2026 campaign inches closer.

Main photo: Ferrari Media Gallery

Anticipation continues to rise for a 2026 season which promises to be transformative for Formula 1.
