For several months now, Mercedes power units have been discussed as the ones to beat for the new regulations.

This consensus is owing to a combination of factors, including their historical track-record and recent information about their development.

However, the last few weeks have further reinforced the belief that Mercedes power will be the benchmark. More than ever before, there is a genuine sense that the Silver Arrows and their customers will begin 2026 with an advantage.

Mercedes engines in pole position for 2026

There are several indicators which point to Mercedes engines as being favourites for 2026. Carlos Sainz and Pierre Gasly, for example, have spoken in glowing terms about about the German manufacturer’s progression.

These comments reflect the almost unanimous paddock narrative about Toto Wolff’s team. Nobody is expecting another power unit to outperform the one produced by the engineers at Mercedes’ factory in Brixworth.

In 2024, when Williams agreed to continue with Mercedes power for 2026 and beyond, team principal James Vowles conveyed clear a sense of confidence. The 46-year-old made clear he believed the German squad were doing an “exceptional job” for the new regulations.

Vowles also added that he anticipates bigger differences between manufacturers in 2026. Suffice it to say, the former Head Strategist believes his team will benefit from these increased performance gaps.

Beyond this, Mercedes are understood to be at the forefront of a crucial innovation regarding engine compression ratio.

The factory in Brixworth has been developing a trick to increase compression ratio (limited to 16:1 in static tests) when the car is circulating on track – likely thanks to a clever use of thermal expansion.

Only Red Bull Powertrains are known to have caught wind of this idea early enough to implement it in 2026. Even then, having only learned of this solution through an engineer they signed from Mercedes, it will take some time for Red Bull to replicate.

Although rival teams have protested against this interpretation of the regulations (and will raise the issue again with the FIA this week), the FIA are not likely to dish out a punishment.

After all, Mercedes were transparent with the FIA from the very beginning, approaching them to ensure their compression ratio idea was within the bounds of the regulations. This means it would take a dramatic turn of events for corrective action – at least in the short term.

Putting aside this specific area, the Silver Arrows are understood to have enjoyed the smoothest journey in developing their 2026 engines.

Unlike other manufacturers, who have encountered various difficulties and obstacles, the direction of travel at Mercedes has been clear and unwavering.

Speaking of the other manufacturers, their limitations have become clearer in the build-up to 2026…

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="b0c95bc04383cef69c6b47df872135cf" image-id="WmOBn6wj6h26" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 6868px; aspect-ratio: 6868/4581;" ></smartframe-embed>

Rival manufacturers on the defensive

Even without considering the hiccups various engine departments have encountered, some manufacturers are simply playing catch-up to Mercedes.

Red Bull and Audi, who will debut their engines for the first time, are still in the process of assembling and expanding the personnel and infrastructure needed to deliver a competitive engine.

Audi, who deliberated slightly about joining F1 before officially committing in August 2022, have been open about the challenge ahead. Mattia Binotto insists that their objective for this year is not the field the best engine, but instead to lay the foundations for future development.

Thanks to Audi’s resources, the factory in Neuburg has an impressive quality and quantity of personnel at their disposal. At the same time, most of these hires are not from F1 – but instead have been signed from Audi’s other motorsport branches.

In this sense, the German team needs time to gather experience in the F1 Championship.

Red Bull have taken the opposite approach, aggressively signing personnel from other manufacturers. To some extent, this strategy has successfully allowed the Milton Keynes squad to acquire over 700 staff for their engine department.

At the same time, Red Bull still have a lot to learn. Whilst they have invested sufficiently to field a competitive engine, their chances of matching Mercedes are extremely low.

This is something team principal Laurent Mekies has admitted to, warning that the first months of 2026 could be painful. Though the Austrian team should never be written off, matching Mercedes power is unrealistic in the short term.

Turning to the more established manufacturers, there are still some relatively important issues to contend with.

On paper, Honda are well-equipped to challenge Mercedes. Having won several titles with Red Bull, the Japanese manufacturer has the infrastructure and know-how to excel.

Unfortunately for Honda, their 2026 development started later than Mercedes. At the end of 2021, the iconic Japanese brand announced they would leave F1 at the end of 2025. At the time, it was their intention to abandon the sport with the introduction of the new regulations.

Of course, they changed their minds on this – eventually signing an agreement to power Aston Martin. However, this deal was signed in the early months of 2023.

This put Honda a few steps behind Mercedes, who were already deep into the 2026 engine regulations. Perhaps more importantly, Honda were forced to build from the ground up after winding down their investment in F1 after their initial decision to leave the sport in 2021.

Because of this, despite a wealth of experience and modern facilities, there are obstacles for Aston Martin’s engine partner.

More recently, statements from Honda Racing Cooperation President Koji Watanabe suggest there are still certain problems to address before the season begins.

Although all teams and manufacturers will be constantly improving, there is a growing sense that Honda must take some risks to compensate for the delays and interruptions in their 2026 trajectory.

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="c78749ece7fd074ea5dc1889e7c53f0f" image-id="esme93hf1AGk" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 6000px; aspect-ratio: 6000/4000;" ></smartframe-embed>

This leaves Ferrari, a team whose engines (excluding a nightmare 2020 season) have rarely been a limiting factor. The power units from Maranello have been competitive over the last fifteen years, even proving a match for Mercedes power on some occasions.

Because of this, Fred Vasseur’s team has no excuses to hide behind if their package falls short.

Aware of the threat posed by Mercedes, it is understood Ferrari have taken big risks with their 2026 power unit. Some of these decisions, as previously reported by LWOS, are known to have presented certain reliability concerns.

Of course, Ferrari have made adjustments which they believe will mitigate these concerns. The Italian team expects to field a reliable enough engine when this year commences.

Relative to Mercedes, though, a deficit in terms of performance is still expected.

This is not to suggest the Scuderia are in a bad position heading into pre-season testing. Team principal Fred Vasseur wants Ferrari to go under the radar and avoid generating any headlines. This is a sensible approach, since there is little benefit from attracting attention before the lights go out in Australia.

Still, the overwhelming consensus remains that Mercedes engines are in a very strong position.

Unlike other manufacturers, impacted by a combination of inexperience, organisational hiccups and development concerns, the Silver Arrows are understood to be firing on all cylinders. With Barcelona testing less than a week away, all eyes will be on the Brackley squad.

Despite restricted media access to the Barcelona tests, paddock rumours will undoubtedly intensify. In this context, a clearer image should begin to emerge about the pecking order.

Main photo: Richard Pardon (Mercedes F1 Media Archive)

Even more casual F1 fans are likely to have seen some of the extensive coverage surrounding the 2026 Mercedes engine.
