(Photo by Peter Fox\/LAT Images)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>Binotto manages expectations for Audi F1 debut<\/h2>\n<p>Engine development, which was essentially static between 2022 and 2025, is once again at the forefront.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2025\/12\/24\/f1-mercedes-and-red-bull-engine-solution-deemed-legal-by-fia\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\">Red Bull and Mercedes<\/a> are the first manufacturers to generate scrutiny ahead of 2026, thanks to a unique method allowing them to increase their compression ratio on track &#8211; whilst still complying with the 16:0 limit during stationary checks.<\/p>\n<p>With the FIA confirming the legality of this solution, these engines will be eagerly monitored during Barcelona testing. To be clear, the true impact of this trick cannot be fully verified until the season begins.<\/p>\n<p>Regardless, this saga speaks to the cut-throat field Audi are competing in.<\/p>\n<p>More specifically, Red Bull&#8217;s work on this idea &#8211; which was reportedly revealed by one of the engineers they signed from Mercedes &#8211; is a reminder that even <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2025\/12\/20\/why-red-bull-and-audis-engines-should-not-be-written-off\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\">new manufacturers should not be underestimated<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Audi have not recruited rival engineers to the same capacity as Red Bull &#8211; partly due to geographical constrains.<\/p>\n<p>Based in the UK, near most other manufacturers, Red Bull can sign engineers from other teams with relative ease. Audi, whose engine facility is based in Neuburg Germany, do not enjoy this luxury.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/sports\/formula1\/binotto-says-audi-will-have-confidence-credibility-f1-debut-2025-12-18\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Reuters<\/a>, Mattia Binotto was candid about Audi&#8217;s targets:<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;The investments that we are doing currently with Audi, all of them are long-term projects. Because they are investments that we will see the return on them, in terms of performance, maybe in three or four years&#8217; time.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;I think we need patience, we are still in that building phase. In this sense, Binotto&#8217;s comments are perfectly sensible.<\/p>\n<p>Then again, setting timelines for F1 success is rarely something that ages well. <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2025\/12\/16\/christian-horner-reportedly-in-talks-to-join-alpine\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\">Alpine<\/a> have become renowned for setting &#8216;five-year plans&#8217; to secure world titles &#8211; only to fall short of their own objectives.<\/p>\n<p>Due to the unpredictable nature of the sport, progress is rarely linear. This means that, even after debut seasons, teams will not necessarily climb the field over time.<\/p>\n<p>With ten other outfits also aiming for titles, the road to the top is very difficult. Audi, of course, are aware of this &#8211; but still have confidence they can improve in the foreseeable future.<\/p>\n<p>After all, it would not inspire great confidence &#8211; especially for sponsors &#8211; if Binotto downplayed Audi&#8217;s chances of success even in 2030.<\/p>\n<p>Moreover, the factory in Neuburg is understood to have made <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2025\/12\/12\/audi-f1-2026-car-ahead-of-schedule-possible-early-test-in-january\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\">good progress on the 2026 engine<\/a>.
