Of course, the primary objective is to improve lap-time, and this season is evidence of the shrinking gaps across the field.

With that said, the growing competition on track is the consequence of what is happening behind the scenes.

Williams, Aston Martin and Sauber (who will enter 2026 as Audi) are obvious examples of the rapidly growing investment throughout the grid. Unlike in previous years, these outfits can be ambitious with their targets for the upcoming regulations.

Cadillac, whilst far less experienced than these names, are already ensuring there is significant infrastructure behind them.

The US team have been using Toyota’s wind tunnel in Cologne, giving them a level of independence in their development that even more established names – like Aston Martin – took years to acquire.

Critically, Cadillac’s 2026 entry was only confirmed at the end of 2024. This meant they were only limited by the FIA’s wind tunnel restrictions starting in January 1st this year.

Prior to this date, they essentially enjoyed the benefit of unlimited wind tunnel hours. This gave the team more breathing space to pursue aggressive aerodynamic targets, which should deliver a bold interpretation of the regulations.

Critically, unlike the existing 10 teams, Cadillac also avoided the headache of splitting their resources between 2025 and 2026.

Meanwhile, their construction of a facility in Silverstone on October 2024 was early evidence of the resources at their disposal. With the backing of a manufacture like GM, there is no shortage of infrastructure at the team’s disposal.

As revealed to The Race, Cadillac currently employ 426 personnel.

For reference, Haas team principal Ayao Komatsu revealed in 2024 that his squad consisted of around 300 staff. Clearly, then, Cadillac have a solid foundation.

Sergio Perez and Valtteri Bottas. (Photo by Dan Mullan/Getty Images) // Getty Images / Red Bull Content Pool

Established teams must prove themselves

Formula 1, arguably more than any other sport, demands that teams and drivers constantly adapt. Standing still is the equivalent of going backwards, particularly in such a closely matched field.

Completely new aerodynamic and engine regulations force teams to be innovative and courageous. Being too conservative can result in a rival unlocking an advantage which – in the cost cap era – can be difficult to overcome.

At the same time, there is always the risk of a radical design backfiring and requiring a fundamental change in philosophy.

For some of the bigger names on the grid, these unknowns are a threat to their positions at the front of the order. A Championship-winning team like McLaren sees its entire advantage eliminated with a new regulation set.

From Cadillac’s perspective, these circumstances are ideal to cause some upsets. Given the extent of their preparations for 2026, it would be a mistake to assume this ambitious US team will be out of its depth.

Main photo: Richard Pardon (Mercedes media gallery)

The 2026 regulations represent a huge challenge for F1’s teams, but they mean something slightly more to Cadillac – who will become the team’s eleventh squad next season.
