(Photo by Mark Thompson\/Getty Images)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>Piastri: &#8220;There&#8217;s still a long way to go&#8221;<\/h2>\n<p>Historically, McLaren have never shied away from signing two drivers capable of challenging each other for titles.<\/p>\n<p>From <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2025\/08\/02\/lewis-hamilton-devastated-after-hungary-qualifying-im-useless\/\" target=\"_self\">Hamilton<\/a> and Button (2010-12) to <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2025\/08\/29\/norris-fastest-alonso-second-as-aston-excel-in-friday-practice\/\" target=\"_self\">Alonso<\/a> and Hamilton in 2007, the Woking squad have enjoyed many strong line-ups.<\/p>\n<p>It is little surprise, then, McLaren are the first team with both drivers in a title race since Mercedes almost a decade ago.<\/p>\n<p>Until now, team principal <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2025\/08\/17\/andrea-stella-compares-piastri-and-norris-to-previous-champions\/\" target=\"_self\">Andrea Stella<\/a> and CEO Zak Brown have been relatively relaxed about the situation.<\/p>\n<p>Aside from the Canadian GP, there have been no major incidents between the papaya duo.<\/p>\n<p>With the constructors title essentially in McLaren&#8217;s hands already, there is less at stake when their drivers cross swords.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, Norris&#8217; retirement changes the dynamics of the title race.<\/p>\n<p>For Piastri, there is now some wriggle-room for small mistakes &#8211; provided he avoids a retirement like his teammate.<\/p>\n<p>Given his performance this year so far, there is little evidence the 24-year-old will commit many unforced errors.<\/p>\n<p>On the flip-side, yesterday&#8217;s result also gives Piastri a chance to consolidate his advantage even more with some victories.<\/p>\n<p>Should he win this weekend in Monza, for example, his lead would increase to a minimum of 41 points.<\/p>\n<p>In this scenario, both materially and psychologically, Piastri&#8217;s position would be even more difficult to disturb.<\/p>\n<p>When asked post-race if he would change his approach, the Australian&#8217;s response was clear.<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;No, I don&#8217;t think so. There is still a long way to do.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;I need to keep pushing and trying to win races still. (Photo by Zak Mauger\/LAT Images)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h4>Crunch time in the Championship<\/h4>\n<p>Comparisons are already being made between Norris&#8217; retirement in Zandvoort and Lewis Hamilton&#8217;s infamous engine failure in Malaysia 2016.<\/p>\n<p>Although these scenarios are not identical, the reason for comparison is clear.<\/p>\n<p>When two title protagonists are so evenly matched, differences in reliability can help decide the Championship.<\/p>\n<p>Until now, the margins between Piastri and Norris have been so small that key incidents (Canada, Zandvoort) have shaped the standings.<\/p>\n<p>Because of this, <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2025\/08\/10\/piastri-outlines-approach-to-title-fight-for-second-half-of-2025\/\" target=\"_self\">Piastri is correct to downplay the prudence of changing his approach<\/a> moving forward.<\/p>\n<p>Fundamentally, the Australian is only one incident away from being within striking range of Norris in the standings.<\/p>\n<p>The Dutch GP, while consequential, is still not the be-all and end-all in this year&#8217;s Championship race.<\/p>\n<p>Piastri has enjoyed sizable advantages (though not to this extent) and seen Norris close the gap.<\/p>\n<p>For both drivers, the aim until the chequered flag in Abu Dhabi is to prove they are definitively faster than their title rival.<\/p>\n<p><em>Main photo: Joe Portlock\/Getty Images (McLaren media gallery)<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Oscar Piastri put together an impressive weekend to claim his first victory in Zandvoort, converting his 5th Pole Position of the season.
