Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff took a big risk when he signed Kimi Antonelli<\/a> for the 2025 season.<\/p>\n

A 17-year-old is always going to experience a huge challenge when joining Formula 1, but their task will be uniquely demanding when driving for a top team.<\/p>\n

These are the conditions Antonelli has been forced to overcome, with Mercedes fast enough to regularly fight for podiums.<\/p>\n

With George Russell on the other side of the garage, the young Italian is being tested at the highest level in his rookie season.<\/p>\n

Despite ups and downs, however, Toto Wolff is pleased with the youngster’s output.<\/p>\n

It is rare that rookies will be the finished product, or even something close to it.<\/p>\n

Raw speed must be harnessed into consistency, which in turn contributes to better tyre management and race pace.<\/p>\n

During a driver’s rookie campaign, understanding the most efficient way to driver and convert pace into lap-time is a demanding task.<\/p>\n

Because of this, flashes of potential and signs of progress are usually the priority for rookies.<\/p>\n

The process of becoming a more complete driver takes time.<\/p>\n

Whilst this does not mean that progress cannot take place during the season (as the likes of Bortoleto are demonstrating), it does necessitate a grace period to properly assess a driver’s ability.<\/p>\n

For Antonelli, mistakes an inconsistency have certainly been a theme in his rookie year.<\/p>\n

His 108-point deficit to teammate George Russell<\/a> is evidence of the gap Antonelli<\/a> must bridge over the coming years.<\/p>\n

Still, his podium finish in Canada and Sprint Pole Position in Miami are examples of the 18-year-old’s inevitable potential.<\/p>\n

Toto Wolff<\/a> recognises this, which is why he feels no obligation to pressurise the Italian:<\/p>\n

“I think it’s a learning experience for all of us,”<\/em> he told Gazzetta<\/a>.<\/p>\n

“We’ve never had such a young guy on the team, and F1 in general has never had an eighteen-year-old in a top team.<\/em><\/p>\n

“We’re trying to work together, including with his family, to create an environment that allows Kimi to give his best on the track.”<\/em><\/p>\n

Mercedes must establish clarity for their drivers<\/h4>\n

Something that Antonelli could not have anticipated before this season was the speculation that would follow Mercedes.<\/p>\n

That has been a prevalent theme for the Silver Arrows, though, with headlines about Max Verstappen’s talks with Toto Wolff becoming a regular theme in 2025.<\/p>\n

There is no doubt these talks occurred, with Mercedes pursuing Verstappen for the second year in a row.<\/p>\n

It should not be overlooked that, prior to signing Antonelli, it was Max Verstappen that the Brackley-based team were pursuing<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Although Toto Wolff was unable to get the Dutchman’s signature this year, his efforts still have consequences for his drivers.<\/p>\n

Despite seemingly having a stable situation with their drivers, Mercedes are yet to confirm either of them for 2026.<\/p>\n

Russell’s position in the team was undermined<\/a> by their pursuit of Verstappen, thus creating an element of uncertainty as the British driver negotiates with the Silver Arrows.<\/p>\n

This impacts Antonelli, who will almost certainly have to wait for Russell to reach an agreement before signing a contract himself.<\/p>\n
