{"id":36886,"date":"2025-08-18T06:15:28","date_gmt":"2025-08-18T10:15:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/?p=36886"},"modified":"2025-08-18T06:15:28","modified_gmt":"2025-08-18T10:15:28","slug":"why-2026-is-make-or-break-for-alpine","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2025\/08\/18\/why-2026-is-make-or-break-for-alpine\/","title":{"rendered":"Why 2026 is make-or-break for Alpine"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2025\/07\/02\/briatore-criticises-his-drivers-says-alpine-pace-increasingly-concerning\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\">Flavio Briatore<\/a> was appointed as executive advisor at Alpine last year, the 75-year-old made no secret of his ambitions.<\/p>\n<p>Having overseen the Enstone team during it&#8217;s glory years in 2005 and 2006, Briatore has been consistent in declaring race wins and Championships as Alpine&#8217;s goal.<\/p>\n<p>The Italian has even set 2026 as the year when Alpine must begin winning races, with a title fight being the objective in 2027.<\/p>\n<p>However, the French squad&#8217;s objectives are in stark contrast to their on-track performance.<\/p>\n<p>Currently last in the standings, Alpine need to rebound quickly in 2026.<\/p>\n<h2>Alpine regress after tumultuous 2025 campaign<\/h2>\n<p>Not for the first time, Alpine were surrounded by controversy and uncertainty last year.<\/p>\n<p>The first moment of instability came after the Monaco GP, where an incident between Gasly and Ocon created a rift within the team.<\/p>\n<p>Bruno Famin, who was team principal at the time, blamed <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2025\/08\/03\/ocon-haas-have-not-been-consistent-enough-this-season\/\" target=\"_self\">Ocon<\/a> for the incident. He even suggested the Frenchman would face &#8220;consequences&#8221; for making contact with his teammate.<\/p>\n<p>Famin&#8217;s reaction, especially given <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2025\/08\/05\/pierre-gasly-warns-the-rest-of-2025-going-to-be-painful-for-alpine\/\" target=\"_self\">Gasly<\/a> caused a far more costly incident the year before in Australia, was objectively disproportionate &#8211; and effectively pushed Ocon to explore alternatives.<\/p>\n<p>When Ocon&#8217;s departure was announced, Alpine&#8217;s search for a replacement dominated headlines surrounding the team.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the volatility of the Enstone team&#8217;s driver situation, this has been secondary to their downturn in form.<\/p>\n<p>Fundamentally, the A525 has been the slowest car on the grid this season.<\/p>\n<p>For a team who finished 6th last year, their decline has been relatively dramatic.<\/p>\n<p>In the context of their departure from <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2024\/10\/04\/renault-ceo-justifies-f1-exit-alpine-has-to-make-money\/\" target=\"_self\">Renault<\/a> engines in favour of Mercedes, there have been questions about Alpine&#8217;s long-term commitment to the sport.<\/p>\n<p>Although Alpine have denied any such speculation, rumours will continue to follow the team unless results improve significantly in 2026.<\/p>\n<h4>No excuse after signing Mercedes engine deal<\/h4>\n<p>With next year being of such importance, Alpine&#8217;s switch to Mercedes engines will be immediately under the microscope.<\/p>\n<p>It is true that since the 2022 regulations began, Renault has been the worst engine in F1.<\/p>\n<p>The difference between Renault and the other three manufacturers (Mercedes, <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2025\/08\/18\/f1-honda-seen-as-potential-wild-card-ahead-of-2026-regulations\/\" target=\"_self\">Honda<\/a> and Ferrari) is estimated as being roughly three tenths.<\/p>\n<p>The power unit&#8217;s poor electrical efficiency is also a big problem, which is especially costly on race day.<\/p>\n<p>Because of this, assuming <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2025\/08\/16\/the-decision-mercedes-must-take-on-george-russell-before-2026\/\" target=\"_self\">Mercedes<\/a> make a strong engine in 2026, the change could be seen as a common-sense move.<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, Alpine&#8217;s unwillingness to invest in their own engine department could also be viewed as a limit to their commitment to winning in Formula 1.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking after the Belgian GP, Flavio Briatore discussed where the team stands:<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;It is a big challenge, as all of our focus is on 2026 and capitalising on the opportunity of the new regulations.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;Now is a critical phase in our work for next year.
