{"id":36834,"date":"2025-08-16T10:04:57","date_gmt":"2025-08-16T14:04:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/?p=36834"},"modified":"2025-08-16T10:04:57","modified_gmt":"2025-08-16T14:04:57","slug":"max-verstappen-admits-red-bull-in-rebuilding-phase","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2025\/08\/16\/max-verstappen-admits-red-bull-in-rebuilding-phase\/","title":{"rendered":"Max Verstappen admits Red Bull in &#8220;rebuilding&#8221; phase"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Red Bull started the year with aspirations of fighting for the Championship, at least on the drivers&#8217; front, after claiming a fourth consecutive title with Max Verstappen.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately for Red Bull, McLaren&#8217;s superiority &#8211; which they showed flashes of in testing &#8211; became clear in the opening rounds.<\/p>\n<p>Although Verstappen managed to claim a few wins to start the year, improvements were necessary for the RB21 to be competitive enough against the MCL39.<\/p>\n<p>Much of the team&#8217;s hopes were <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2025\/04\/09\/red-bull-anticipate-mclaren-setback-after-next-flexi-wing-directive\/\" target=\"_self\">pinned on the Spanish GP technical directive<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>When McLaren emerged virtually unaffected by the new flexi-wing regulations, Verstappen&#8217;s hopes for 2025 were effectively extinguished.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"vrU1o7_URpVool3Kr2Jciw\" class=\"gie-single\" style=\"color: #a7a7a7; text-decoration: none; font-weight: normal !important; border: none; display: inline-block;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.gettyimages.com\/detail\/2226951325\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Embed from Getty Images<\/a><script>window.gie=window.gie||function(c){(gie.q=gie.q||[]).push(c)};gie(function(){gie.widgets.load({id:'vrU1o7_URpVool3Kr2Jciw',sig:'0HfhT_sAv1ABg2ohVqg1lhGsrG1yBqP8u_9vwB8jGwo=',w:'594px',h:'396px',items:'2226951325',caption: true ,tld:'com',is360: false })});<\/script><script src='\/\/embed-cdn.gettyimages.com\/widgets.js' charset='utf-8' async><\/script><\/p>\n<h2>Verstappen says he is optimistic about Red Bull recovery<\/h2>\n<p>On paper, Max Verstappen&#8217;s contract with Red Bull does not expire until 2028.<\/p>\n<p>Because of this, one could be forgiven for dismissing the early reports about his contract talks with Mercedes.<\/p>\n<p>Critically, though, an exit clause in his contract gave the Dutchman some room for manoeuvrability &#8211; albeit under specific conditions.<\/p>\n<p>As Red Bull&#8217;s failure to keep up with McLaren became clear, Verstappen ramped up his discussions with Mercedes.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2025\/07\/12\/russell-i-dont-take-mercedes-and-verstappen-talks-personally\/\" target=\"_self\">George Russell, who confirmed the 4-time Champion&#8217;s talks<\/a> with the Silver Arrows, spent several months on the sidelines as Toto Wolff spoke to Verstappen.<\/p>\n<p>Ultimately, though, Verstappen was unable to activate his exit clause.<\/p>\n<p>The 27-year-old could only leave Red bull if he entered the summer break 4th or below in the standings.<\/p>\n<p>When he was guaranteed to finish the first half of the year in 3rd, talks with <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2025\/08\/10\/toto-wolff-i-expect-a-lot-from-ferrari-and-aston-martin-in-2026\/\" target=\"_self\">Toto Wolff&#8217;s squad<\/a> came to an end.<\/p>\n<p>At leas for now, Verstappen is committed to turning around the situation at Red Bull.<\/p>\n<p>Whilst admitting the team&#8217;s tricky position, he underlines a <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.formula1.com\/en\/latest\/article\/max-verstappen-2025-title-contention-future-red-bull.59lK9E06oPhnLn18vdDpgE\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">confidence in their ability to bounce back<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;Now I feel like [Red Bull&#8217;s current phase is] slight rebuilding.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;We&#8217;re still of course a very strong team. But I do think that to make again a step up, there&#8217;s slight rebuilding or restructuring maybe.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;And understanding a little bit more what&#8217;s going on, and that of course takes a little bit of time. But hopefully not too much time.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;I think that&#8217;s also a bit the mentality of the team [to bounce back]. It&#8217;s always been like that. So I&#8217;m not too worried about that.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a id=\"_Bz1V27eT8JHiCfre1ez4w\" class=\"gie-single\" style=\"color: #a7a7a7; text-decoration: none; font-weight: normal !important; border: none; display: inline-block;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.gettyimages.com\/detail\/2227222595\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Embed from Getty Images<\/a><script>window.gie=window.gie||function(c){(gie.q=gie.q||[]).push(c)};gie(function(){gie.widgets.load({id:'_Bz1V27eT8JHiCfre1ez4w',sig:'plrsXiQeHW9fV-IrD5tp52GHLbESnBpo8gBtBkyffN0=',w:'594px',h:'411px',items:'2227222595',caption: true ,tld:'com',is360: false })});<\/script><script src='\/\/embed-cdn.gettyimages.com\/widgets.js' charset='utf-8' async><\/script><\/p>\n<h4>2026 is critical<\/h4>\n<p>The importance of the 2026 regulations cannot be overstated, with next year representing a complete reset.<\/p>\n<p>As the 2014 and 2022 rule changes demonstrated, teams who start on the front-foot often consolidate their advantage and dominate for many years.<\/p>\n<p>For Red Bull, next year&#8217;s development is of even greater importance.<\/p>\n<p>If they are to retain Max Verstappen&#8217;s services, they must produce a car that can win races.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps more fundamentally, they must demonstrate their new power unit programme (in collaboration with Ford) can go toe-to-toe with the likes of Mercedes.<\/p>\n<p>In many ways, Adrian Newey&#8217;s departure last year (and Red Bull&#8217;s stagnant development since then) is evidence that the former Champions must reset.<\/p>\n<p>The team have lost several key figures, from <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2025\/07\/12\/adrian-newey-anticipates-range-of-aero-solutions-in-2026\/\" target=\"_self\">Newey<\/a> to Marshall to <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2025\/07\/14\/jonathan-wheatley-no-doubts-perez-is-capable-of-f1-comeback\/\" target=\"_self\">Wheatley<\/a>, over the last eighteen months.<\/p>\n<p>Finding adequate replacements will be essential if <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2025\/08\/16\/why-alex-albon-has-turned-down-advances-from-red-bull\/\" target=\"_self\">Red Bull<\/a> want to prevent this year&#8217;s blip from becoming a downward trend.<\/p>\n<p><em>Main photo: Photo by Sam Bagnall\/Sutton Images (via Red Bull content pool)<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Red Bull started the year with aspirations of fighting for the Championship, at least on the drivers&#8217; front, after claiming a fourth consecutive title with Max Verstappen.
