As it stands, the likes of Bottas, Perez and <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2025\/08\/01\/f1-felipe-drugovich-among-contenders-for-2026-cadillac-seat\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\">Drugovich<\/a> are seen as the favourites to form Cadillac F1&#8217;s line-up.<\/p>\n<p>Still, this does not mean Schumacher is not a part of Cadillac&#8217;s plans.<\/p>\n<h2>Mick Schumacher to become Cadillac F1 reserve driver alongside WEC duties<\/h2>\n<p>Roughly twelve months ago, Mick Schumacher was seen as a candidate to replace Logan Sargeant at Williams.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"SohJyhg0TkRkfli0H8vKxg\" class=\"gie-single\" style=\"color: #a7a7a7; text-decoration: none; font-weight: normal !important; border: none; display: inline-block;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.gettyimages.com\/detail\/2223845472\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Embed from Getty Images<\/a><script>window.gie=window.gie||function(c){(gie.q=gie.q||[]).push(c)};gie(function(){gie.widgets.load({id:'SohJyhg0TkRkfli0H8vKxg',sig:'EkBqyNr3Fjx4IaCqocpL1HGo4vSo_XjbXur9w7n4ryA=',w:'594px',h:'396px',items:'2223845472',caption: true ,tld:'com',is360: false })});<\/script><script src='\/\/embed-cdn.gettyimages.com\/widgets.js' charset='utf-8' async><\/script><\/p>\n<p>His status as a Mercedes reserve driver was interpreted as a good platform to negotiate with James Vowles and secure a seat mid-season.<\/p>\n<p>This ultimately did not transpire, though, with Vowles showing little interest in pursuing the 26-year-old.<\/p>\n<p>Even with <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2025\/08\/10\/toto-wolff-i-expect-a-lot-from-ferrari-and-aston-martin-in-2026\/\" target=\"_self\">Toto Wolff<\/a> offering Schumacher to Williams, the decision was instead taken to promote <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2025\/08\/13\/franco-colapintos-alpine-seat-is-secure-until-the-end-of-2025\/\" target=\"_self\">Franco Colapinto<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This series of events broadly summarises Schumacher&#8217;s quest for an F1 comeback in recent years. Whilst always under consideration, he has missed out on securing a full-time seat.<\/p>\n<p>A similar story could repeat itself with Cadillac and their driver saga. According to a report from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.the-race.com\/formula-1\/where-schumacher-fits-into-cadillac-f1-plans\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Race<\/a>, the US project is most likely to sign Schumacher as a reserve and development driver.<\/p>\n<p>From Cadillac&#8217;s perspective, this is a perfectly logical outcome to pursue.<\/p>\n<p>Having spent a few seasons as Mercedes reserve driver, the 25-year-old is no stranger to simulation work and providing feedback.<\/p>\n<p>Moreover, it would help facilitate Schumacher&#8217;s move to join Cadillac&#8217;s WEC (World Endurance Championship) team.<\/p>\n<p>Currently driving for Alpine, Schumacher is set to join Cadillac in World Endurance for 2026.<\/p>\n<p>This switch would represent a deep level of commitment and integration to the newest project in Formula 1.<\/p>\n<p>Graeme Lowdon, Cadillac team principal, has often spoken in glowing terms about the former Haas driver.<\/p>\n<p>Therefore, whilst a full-time seat for 2026 appears unlikely, Schumacher could position himself as an important asset for the long-term.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"7IOl1kGLS7tBRrg81o3tEw\" class=\"gie-single\" style=\"color: #a7a7a7; text-decoration: none; font-weight: normal !important; border: none; display: inline-block;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.gettyimages.com\/detail\/2223695921\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Embed from Getty Images<\/a><script>window.gie=window.gie||function(c){(gie.q=gie.q||[]).push(c)};gie(function(){gie.widgets.load({id:'7IOl1kGLS7tBRrg81o3tEw',sig:'_xUJzyHAjWxsr5TbNf6E86iPe_sDR5WganZV33p9pj0=',w:'594px',h:'396px',items:'2223695921',caption: true ,tld:'com',is360: false })});<\/script><script src='\/\/embed-cdn.gettyimages.com\/widgets.js' charset='utf-8' async><\/script><\/p>\n<h4>The main contenders<\/h4>\n<p>So far, there have been very few developments in F1 during the summer break. With team focused intently on 2026 development, driver signings and announcements appear to be of secondary importance.<\/p>\n<p>The likes of <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2025\/08\/05\/george-russell-insists-mercedes-contract-talks-wont-be-simple\/\" target=\"_self\">George Russell<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2025\/08\/13\/gasly-reveals-discussions-with-tsunoda-about-red-bull-difficulties\/\" target=\"_self\">Yuki Tsunoda<\/a> and Franco Colapinto are unlikely to have their futures secured until later in the year.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, unlike other teams, Cadillac have been thinking about their 2026 line-up since the end of 2024.<\/p>\n<p>At face value, this might suggest they are likely to announce their drivers before some of the other teams.<\/p>\n<p>In reality, though, there is no clear timeline on when Cadillac are going to make any announcements.<\/p>\n<p>The only real certainty is that at least one driver &#8211; such as <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2025\/08\/11\/valtteri-bottas-expected-to-become-first-cadillac-f1-signing\/\" target=\"_self\">Bottas<\/a> or Perez &#8211; is set to join the American team.<\/p>\n<p>Much like in previous months, the question remains if a younger driver, or another veteran, will occupy the second seat.<\/p>\n<p>This decision is likely what will dictate the pace of negotiations over the next few months.<\/p>\n<p><em>Main photo: via Mercedes media gallery<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Since being replaced at Haas in late 2022, Mick Schumacher has been a regular feature in driver market discussions.
