Formula 1 World Championship, Rd 6, Miami Grand Prix, Miami, Florida, USA, Race Day.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h4>Williams aim to cling onto P5<\/h4>\n<p>As team principal James Vowles frequently emphasises, Williams have been focused on the 2026 regulations since the beginning of the year.<\/p>\n<p>Many of the decisions taken last year were to ensure the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2025\/05\/25\/williams-disappointed-after-failing-to-optimise-fw47-in-qualifying\/\" target=\"_self\">FW47<\/a> would still be competitive in spite of the team focusing on 2026.<\/p>\n<p>In this sense, the British outfit have been successful in hitting two birds with one stone.<\/p>\n<p>Updates to the FW47 have been relatively scarce, and those which have arrived were designed before the season began.<\/p>\n<p>For Williams to be 5th in the standings, first of the midfield teams, is even more impressive in this context.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately for the Grove-based operation, rivals have taken considerable steps over recent months.<\/p>\n<p>Just last weekend in Hungary, <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2025\/08\/02\/alonso-aston-martin-progress-encouraging-for-next-years-project\/\" target=\"_self\">Fernando Alonso<\/a>, Lance Stroll, Gabriel Bortoleto and Liam Lawson finished ahead of both Red Bull&#8217;s, a Ferrari (Hamilton) and a <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2025\/08\/08\/mercedes-aim-for-damage-limitation-after-failed-updates\/\" target=\"_self\">Mercedes<\/a> (Antonelli).<\/p>\n<p>All three drivers delivered big points for their respective teams, reducing Williams&#8217; gap in the standings.<\/p>\n<p>With another potentially unfavourable track in Zandvoort approaching, Carlos Sainz&#8217; warning about 2026 could become even more apparent.<\/p>\n<p><em>Main photo: via Williams media gallery<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Arguably more than anyone else in the midfield, Carlos Sainz is open about his disappointment with his first half of 2025.
