Saturday’s Mission 200 certainly looked like it was going to do so as well. The Connor Zilisch- Shane Van Gisbergen match-up was set for part three. Both had the cars and the opportunity to fight for the lead throughout the day. But some unfortunate hard racing put an end to that intriguing duel on lap 64 of the 82-lap race. That only paved the way for ugly road racing antics, which ultimately outshone Connor Zilisch scoring his seventh career win, in just his 26th career Xfinity start.

Ugly Road Racing Overshadows Connor Zilisch’s Xfinity Series Win at Watkins Glen

The Connor Zilisch experience has been quite phenomenal to say the least. He now has 11-straight top-five finishes, with five wins during that stretch alone. But before he could celebrate winning, he had to fight off challenges from all kinds of competition. From van Gisbergen, to Michael McDowell, and even a freshly returned Austin Hill from a suspension. More on Hill in a moment. He didn’t help himself at the Glen, that’s for sure.

WATKINS GLEN, NEW YORK – AUGUST 09: Connor Zilisch, driver of the #88 Registix Chevrolet, celebrates with a burnout after winning the NASCAR Xfinity Series Mission 200 at The Glen at Watkins Glen International on August 09, 2025 in Watkins Glen, New York. (Photo by Sean Gardner/Getty Images)

JR Motorsports Came to Play

It was very clear that Watkins Glen continues to be a JR Motorsports playground. They held the lead for the first 23 laps of the race. Zilisch traded the lead with van Gisbergen before they both pitted before the finish of the opening stage. That gave their other teammate, Justin Allgaier, the lead, and he was able to hold the lead to win the opening stage. A much-needed stage win for the No. 7 team, as they have had some not-so-great runs as of late.

Stage two was more of the same, as Zilisch and van Gisbergen continued to fight for the top spot. This time, Zilisch prevailed, winning the second stage, and by that point, he started to separate himself from Shane. The JR Motorsports battle between Connor and Shane came to a real messy head on lap 64, as they were fighting to try and hold off a hard-charging Austin Hill with less than 20 laps to go in the race.

A misjudgment by both drivers saw Zilisch and van Gisbergen make contact coming off of turn six into turn seven, and Shane was sent hard into the outside barrier. He hit with enough force that his car left the ground. Sending this very competitive race down quite an ugly path, the rest of the way.

Caution is out after Connor Zilisch makes contact with Shane van Gisbergen as they race for the lead. pic.twitter.com/4iJQILjZL0

— NASCAR Xfinity (@NASCAR_Xfinity) August 9, 2025

Austin Hill Didn’t Learn His Lesson, It Appears

The aforementioned, Austin Hill. Boy, did he try to make a mockery of the race in the final 10 laps. After taking control on the restart following the SVG-Zilisch dustup. Note, he only did so by giving Connor the boot into turn one. Hill started using some not-so-popular antics to try and win the race. Cautions started to pile up by that point.

Zilisch showcased his racing prowess following the very next restart, as he came from sixth back to the lead on lap 75. Then all hell broke loose. As Hill fought with McDowell for second, off the bus stop. They both got very wide going into turn six, which is the tightest section of the track. The two came together, and despite the situation, Hill made contact with Michael, and a very ugly scene unfolded. He hit the wall hard, flying back onto the course and in front of the rest of the field.

The carnage ended up involving 16 cars when it was all said and done. I know he didn’t do it on purpose, but the way Hill drives it’s getting borderline out of control. He certainly didn’t learn his lesson from being suspended following his right hook of Aric Almirola at Indianapolis. Austin has certainly lost a lot of respect throughout the field, and his antics aren’t a good path.

The red flag is out on Lap 75 after this incident involving multiple cars. pic.twitter.com/eFyaMo5t0G

— NASCAR Xfinity (@NASCAR_Xfinity) August 9, 2025

After a 45-minute delay for clean-up, the racing action returned, and despite plenty of challenges from the remaining cars at the front of the field, Connor Zilisch was able to score win number six of the season.

Victory Celebration Turns Scary

After getting his No. 88 to victory lane, Zilisch was climbing from his car at quite an excited rate when a very scary moment occurred. As he tried to climb the rest of the way out of the car, Connor twisted and fell, making heavy contact with the ground. He appeared to have hit his head and was on the ground for some time. He was eventually taken to the infield care center.

Zilisch later updated everyone about his situation via his social media.

” Thank you, everybody, for reaching out today. Things certainly took a poor turn for what should have been another happy celebration for Connor Zilisch.

Get well soon, Connor. Thankfully, the series is off until August 22nd at Daytona. Years ago, drivers raced with broken collarbones, but it will be interesting to see what happens with Zilisch and how NASCAR will handle this unfortunate situation.

Read Next: JRM Reaches 100 Xfinity Series Victories.
