Despite Max Verstappen<\/a> committing himself to Red Bull for 2026, George Russell does not expect Mercedes contract negotiations to be straight-forward.<\/p>\n

Russell will only a sign a deal that meets certain requirements, with no intention of rushing to make an agreement.<\/p>\n

Although the British driver will almost certainly continue with the Silver Arrows, there are still key areas for both parties to settle.<\/p>\n

Russell reveals his perspective on Mercedes talks<\/h2>\n

Red Bull’s failure to keep pace with McLaren<\/a> in the development race has had direct implications on this year’s title fight.<\/p>\n

After keeping up with the papaya duo for the first five rounds of the year, Verstappen is now too far behind Piastri and Norris to maintain his crown.<\/p>\n

This has been the reality for some time – and has sparked doubts about Verstappen’s future with the team.<\/p>\n

Although the Dutchman committed to staying at Red Bull for 2026 last weekend in Hungary, this was not necessarily a vote of confidence.<\/p>\n

Instead, due to the terms of his exit clause, the 4-time Champion is unable to leave Red Bull this season.<\/p>\n

This is good news for George Russell, since the Dutchman was in negotiations with Mercedes until recently.<\/p>\n

Russell himself admitted earlier in the year<\/a> that Mercedes were in talks with the reigning Champion.<\/p>\n

However, Verstappen’s obligation to continue at Milton Keynes does not mean that Russell’s contractual situation will be so simple.<\/p>\n

Speaking to Sky Sports in Hungary, the 27-year-old said that reaching an agreement won’t be easy:<\/p>\n

“I’m seven years into Formula 1 right now, I feel that I’m at my peak – and I feel that I’m still getting stronger as a driver.<\/em><\/p>\n

“I was maybe more anxious about getting the deal done maybe 12 months ago… <\/em><\/p>\n

“But right now, I’ve sort of waited so long, I want to make sure it’s right. It’s got to be right for the team, it’s got to be right for myself.<\/em><\/p>\n

“It’s got to to all make sense, duration has got to be right – both ways.<\/em><\/p>\n

“So it’s not as simple as saying – are you happy with what you’re being paid? That’s a very small factor of it.”<\/em><\/p>\n

Mercedes also work to finalise Antonelli contract<\/h4>\n

In recent interviews, Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff has affirmed his commitment to George Russell.<\/p>\n

With Verstappen no longer an option, this is perfectly understandable. With that said, it would be a mistake to assume that Mercedes’ flirtations with Verstappen<\/a> have not impacted Russell’s perspective.<\/p>\n

Although Mercedes ultimately weren’t able to sign the World Champion, their intention was clear<\/a>.<\/p>\n

For Russell, who has performed at an exceptionally high level, having uncertainty over his Mercedes future was undeniably uncomfortable.<\/p>\n

Because of this, it is not unsurprising that Russell wants to take his time before signing a new contract.<\/p>\n

Verstappen ultimately cannot leave Red Bull this year, but his availability should change next season – when he will have the freedom to explore the options in the market.<\/p>\n

In this environment, Russell will want assurances that Mercedes want him at the team for the long-term<\/a>.<\/p>\n

With Mercedes generally expected to be front-runners in 2026, signing an extension is a logical option for Russell.<\/p>\n

Crucially, though, Verstappen becoming unavailable gives him more leverage to secure a more preferential contract.<\/p>\n
