Last time we raced in Chicago, it was Alex Bowman breaking an 80-race winless streak, after suffering a concussion and a back injury. We saw Bowman run well in Mexico City. Can Bowman be the fourth Hendrick driver to lock into the playoffs? Or will we see another winner in this race?

Alex Bowman, driver of the #48 Ally Chevrolet, crosses the finish line to win the NASCAR Cup Series Grant Park 165 at Chicago Street Course on July 07, 2024, in Chicago, Illinois. The stage cautions will be on laps 20 and 45, and the checkered flag on lap 75. A total of 11,704,450 dollars is available in the prize purse for this race. Goodyear is bringing the tires previously used at Mexico City and COTA. Teams will have 6 sets of tires for the race, 5 fresh sets, and 1 from qualifying.

We have seen rain in the previous two years, so Goodyear is bringing the wet-weather tires. Teams will have 5 sets, 4 fresh and 1 from qualifying.

The Track-The Chicago Street Course:

The Chicago Street Course is a 2.2-mile road course that features 12 turns, utilizing iconic downtown Chicago streets like Michigan Avenue and Lake Shore Drive. With its long straightaways and tight corners, it demands perfection from all drivers, or else you’ll end up in the tire barriers. This unforgiving road course truly makes NASCAR’s first street course unique.

There have been only two winners at the Chicago Street Course: Shane Van Gisbergen and Alex Bowman. SVG set the lap record last year, running a 1:29.720-second lap.

NASCAR Cup Series Point Standings:

Here are the point standings following the previous race at Atlanta:

1. William Byron: 631
2. Chase Elliott: 594
3. Kyle Larson: 589
4. Denny Hamlin: 551
5. Christopher Bell: 551
6. Tyler Reddick: 533
7. Ryan Blaney: 504
8. Ross Chastain: 458
9. Chris Buescher: 457
10. The second round continues in Chicago, with some solid matchups. Here are the battles to watch out for:

Brad Keselowski (17) vs Ty Dillon (32)

Alex Bowman (8) vs Bubba Wallace (9)

Chase Elliott (5) vs John Hunter Nemechek (12)

Erik Jones (20) vs Ricky Stenhouse Jr. (29)

Ryan Preece (15) vs Noah Gragson (31)

Tyler Reddick (23) vs Carson Hocevar (26)

Ty Gibbs (6) vs AJ Allmendinger (22)

Chris Buescher (3) vs Zane Smith (14)

My picks for who advances are in bold

Read More: Who Will Win The NASCAR In-Season Challenge?

Drivers To Watch:

Four drivers are joining the field for this race in Chicago, they are:

Will Brown, #13 Chevy for Kaulig Racing. Brown currently competes in the Australian V8 Supercars Series

Austin Hill, #33 Chevy for Richard Childress Racing.

Corey Heim, #67 Toyota for 23XI Racing.

Katherine Legge, #78 Chevy for Live Fast Motorsports.

With 41 drivers attempting to qualify for 40 spots, one driver will be sent home after qualifying.

As for who wins this race, I think it is another where all eyes are on Shane Van Gisbergen. He dominated the field in Mexico City, but that was the first time for the entire field. He has great odds for this weekend. I think the field has caught up to him. As for other Chevy teammates, I think Bowman is a good pick. Ran well in Mexico and COTA this year, a quiet road-course contender.

Ty Gibbs is another driver in the field who has become a quiet contender on road courses. Ran third in the 2024 race and eleventh in Mexico City. Gibbs is a good pick if you are a Toyota fan.

Lastly, for the Fords. I think Chris Buescher is the strongest road course driver for the blue ovals. Seventh at COTA in March, tenth at Mexico City. Both of those finishes came from starting spots 16th or worse. Look at his win last year at Watkins Glen, he can run with the best road racers in the series, and beat them.

How To Watch The Cup Series in Chicago:

Here is the weekend schedule for the Grant Park 165:

Saturday, July 5th:

Practice

1:00 PM Eastern

Coverage is on TruTV, and radio coverage is on SiriusXM, provided by MRN

Qualifying:

2:00 PM Eastern

Coverage continues on TruTV, along with radio coverage on SiriusXM

Sunday, July 6th:

The Grant Park 165:

2:00 PM Eastern

Coverage is on TNT Sports and HBO Max.
