Mercedes are yet to confirm their 2026 line-up, with Max Verstappen still firmly on Toto Wolff’s radar<\/a>. The Mercedes team principal’s sustained pursuit of Verstappen has left George Russell in an awkward position.<\/p>\n

Despite performing at an exceptionally high level this year, Russell faces significant doubts regarding his future.<\/p>\n

Verstappen’s Red Bull contract has an exit clause that could be activated during the summer break – assuming certain conditions are met.<\/p>\n

In this context, Toto Wolff<\/a> is working to convince the Dutchman that Mercedes is his best option for 2026 and beyond.<\/p>\n

According to the 53-year-old, Red Bull will have significant hurdles to overcome when new regulations arrive.<\/p>\n

Mercedes still probing the Max Verstappen camp<\/h2>\n

The last eighteen months have seen Red Bull lose grip of their dominance over Formula 1.<\/p>\n

Even with Verstappen clinching last year’s Championship, the 2024 season was defined by Red Bull losing out to McLaren in the development race.<\/p>\n

This trend has continued in 2025, with McLaren<\/a> on track to claim both the drivers and constructors titles.<\/p>\n

Mercedes, meanwhile, have made relatively steady progress over recent season. George Russell’s victory in Canada was confirmation that the W16 – at least in certain conditions – can win races.<\/p>\n

More so than in previous years, the last few months have shown Red Bull’s dependence on Verstappen<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The 27-year-old’s excellence cannot be denied, and (as seen last year) can make the difference in Championship battles.<\/p>\n

Toto Wolff knows this very well, which is why he has delayed contract negotiations with Russell.<\/p>\n

Russell<\/a> is a fantastic driver in his own right, arguably one of the top performers in 2025. With that said, Wolff clearly believes that signing Verstappen – irrespective of who loses their seat – is an opportunity that must be seized if it arises.<\/p>\n

It is the consequence of this perspective that Mercedes are still in contact with the Red Bull driver.<\/p>\n

Over the coming weeks, it will become clearer if the 4-time Champion can activate his exit clause to leave Red Bull – and whether he feels the need to exercise this option.<\/p>\n

Wolff gives verdict on Red Bull’s 2025 chances<\/h4>\n

A series of poor results have put an emphasis on Red Bull and their failure to improve the RB21.<\/p>\n

However, arguably of greater significance for Verstappen’s future is how the Austrian squad will perform in 2026.<\/p>\n

The consensus is that Mercedes will be more competitive than Red Bull when the new regulations arrive.<\/p>\n

Christian Horner’s team<\/a> are currently working on developing their engine. Whilst effectively becoming a manufacturer team is a positive in the long-term, it presents some immediate challenges.<\/p>\n

Toto Wolff highlighted these obstacles when speaking to Kleine Zeitung<\/a>:<\/p>\n

“Max is a loyal guy. I don’t think he’ll jump at the first opportunity to jump ship if he feels things are going south there.<\/em><\/p>\n

“The team dynamics around Helmut Marko certainly play a role, and certainly also whether the car is competitive for next year.<\/em><\/p>\n

“Of course, it’s always possible that something good will come out of their [Red Bull’s engine] infrastructure and their people.<\/em><\/p>\n

“But if you calculate how likely that is, it would be a real feat if they succeed in making a big splash right away.”<\/em><\/p>\n
