{"id":35008,"date":"2025-06-15T23:47:50","date_gmt":"2025-06-16T03:47:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/?p=35008"},"modified":"2025-06-15T23:49:37","modified_gmt":"2025-06-16T03:49:37","slug":"kyle-kirkwood-conquers-the-night-in-st-louis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2025\/06\/15\/kyle-kirkwood-conquers-the-night-in-st-louis\/","title":{"rendered":"Kyle Kirkwood Conquers The Night In St. Louis"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As day turned into night, the NTT IndyCar Series drivers were told to start their engines for the Bommarito Automotive Group 500 in St. Louis.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Right off the bat, there was action all across the track, and it didn\u2019t let up until the moment the chequered flag waved.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>St. Louis\u2019 Night Race Was A Breath of Fresh Air As Kyle Kirkwood Wins His First Oval Race<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After being dubbed the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2025\/06\/01\/indycar-detroit-grand-prix-brought-plenty-of-action-to-the-streets\/\" target=\"_self\">\u201cKing of The Streets\u201d<\/a> Kyle Kirkwood is making his mark on an oval. He remains the only other driver aside from Alex Palou to win a race in the 2025 season.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What started off as a race where Team Penske was expected to dominate ended up in another show-stopping stint for the Andretti Global driver. Kirkwood led in the race&#8217;s later stages but was hovering around the top ten for most of the night.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Pato O\u2019Ward and Christian Rasmussen Score Podium Finishes\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the other side of things, Chevrolet has yet to get a constructor&#8217;s win this season. <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2024\/10\/23\/owards-career-and-rise-to-indy-stardom\/\" target=\"_self\">O\u2019Ward<\/a> started the race from fifth on the grid. He got close to securing the win tonight before a few chaotic laps sent him down the grid.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">O&#8217;Ward worked his way back up and was chasing Kirkwood down for the lead. He got close to him during the second-to-last lap, but ultimately Kirkwood managed to pull ahead and increase his margin that extra bit more to secure his win.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">P2 for Pato O&#8217;Ward. He moved up 22 places during the race to come in third. June 15, 2025, (Photo by Karl Zemlin, Penske Entertainment)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3><b>Collisions for Foster and Newgarden\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2024\/12\/31\/louis-fosters-junior-career-lead-him-to-rll-racing\/\" target=\"_self\">Louis Foster<\/a> had a bit of bad luck in St. Louis after losing control and going into the wall, which brought his race to a premature end. <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2025\/01\/01\/reliving-josef-newgardens-first-championship-winning-season\/\" target=\"_self\">Josef Newgarden<\/a> was attempting to avoid Foster\u2019s car, but in doing so, the two made contact.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Newgarden\u2019s car flipped upside down and nearly went over the wall and into the pits.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Both drivers were taken to the medical center and released without any major injuries.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Both Josef Newgarden and Louis Foster are okay after this scary wreck at WWT Raceway. <a  href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/s2OhHPEWib\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">pic.twitter.com\/s2OhHPEWib<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 INDYCAR on FOX (@IndyCarOnFOX) <a  href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/IndyCarOnFOX\/status\/1934429250247106710?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">June 16, 2025<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<h3><b>Other Notable Moments in St. Louis<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first caution of the race was brought out during lap four. Devlin DeFrancesco lost control while entering turn one, which sent him into the barrier. The team over at <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2025\/04\/13\/grand-prix-of-long-beachs-most-memorable-moments\/\" target=\"_self\">Rahal Letterman Lanigan <\/a>Racing were able to fix the rear wing. DeFrancesco rejoined the race despite being 33 laps down.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The second caution was brought after an issue for Will Power. After exiting the car, Power experienced failure with his front right tire. He went into the wall at turn four but managed to drive his car back into the pit lane before retiring.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During the caution that came out after Power\u2019s accident, a load of chaos went down in the pits. <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2024\/12\/06\/driver-evolution-how-arrow-mclaren-landed-on-their-teams-newest-addition-for-next-season\/\" target=\"_self\">Christian Lundgaard<\/a> overestimated where to stop and had trouble getting into his pit box. Amid all the confusion Christian Rasmussen was leaving his pit box when his car caught on fire.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">IndyCar goes racing again next week.
