Photo by Joe Skibinski, Penske Entertainment.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Today, Formula 1 announced its 2026 schedule, and many IndyCar fans quickly pointed out a major conflict: the Montreal Grand Prix and the Indy 500 are on the same day.<\/p>\n<p>Now, having a grand prix and the IndyCar&#8217;s biggest race of the year isn&#8217;t new, given the 500 has frequently taken place on the same Sunday as the Monaco Grand Prix.<\/p>\n<p>But now with F1\u2019s calendar reshuffle moving Montreal to May seemingly at the same time, on the same day, on the same continent, it puts itself into a head-to-head battle with one of the most cherished traditions on the international racing calendar.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Solid F1 calendar for 26 but a shame the Monaco \/ 500 clash has become a Canada \/ 500 clash. The blame for the conflict is on F1 and the deal that changed things up.<\/p>\n<p>Late last year, F1 <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2024\/11\/15\/does-monaco-still-belong-on-the-f1-calendar\/\" target=\"_self\">announced Monaco had inked a new dea<\/a>l that put the race in the month of June, and there was some hope that this would prevent any Indy 500 clash at all and potentially invite any F1 drivers to participate in the 500.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, it was also known that Montreal had to move to May to pair with the Miami Grand Prix rather than its current spot, which falls between two European races, to\u00a0reduce travel headaches.<\/p>\n<p>Next year, the Miami GP is set for May 3, with Canada following three weeks later on May 24. Anyone could look at this, and it&#8217;s easy to say, why not move it up a week, or make it a back-to-back?<\/p>\n<p>One of the reasons is that, given that snowstorms in Canada remain a possibility until late April, and with the necessity of starting setup work well in advance of the race weekend, Canadian GP organizers believe choosing an earlier weekend in May might risk not finishing the build on time.<\/p>\n<p>Now, there were probably other ways to avoid the conflict that would require more movement in the schedule, but they decided on the easy way out and took the risk of putting the Canadian GP on the same day as the event that had a historic year last year.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Read More:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2025\/06\/10\/f1-history-of-the-canadian-grand-prix\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\">F1: History of the Canadian Grand Prix<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<h3>The Effect<\/h3>\n<p>Since the announcement, there has been lots of backlash calling the move &#8216;disrespectful&#8217; and <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/6414636\/2025\/06\/10\/f1-2026-schedule-indy-500\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">&#8216;arrogant<\/a>&#8216;, but is it really? Or is it just the last possible resort? Because the conflict may actually hurt F1 and its goal of growing the sport in the United States, rather than affecting IndyCar at all.<\/p>\n<p>In the last several years, &#8220;Motorsports Christmas&#8221; in the United States has taken off, with even NASCAR supporters getting up at dawn to watch the Monaco GP ahead of the Indy 500 and then the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2025\/05\/26\/ross-chastain-captures-glory-with-coke-600-victory\/\" target=\"_self\">Coca-Cola 600<\/a>, a triple header and a day full of racing.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">FYI.. I\u2019m just sad for the race fan in me that loved watching 3 Crown Jewels on the same day. But instead we\u2019ve decided to compete with each other instead of just enjoy pure Motorsport.
