{"id":34561,"date":"2025-06-01T04:24:21","date_gmt":"2025-06-01T08:24:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/?p=34561"},"modified":"2025-06-01T04:27:00","modified_gmt":"2025-06-01T08:27:00","slug":"colapinto-not-guaranteed-to-finish-season-with-alpine-says-briatore","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2025\/06\/01\/colapinto-not-guaranteed-to-finish-season-with-alpine-says-briatore\/","title":{"rendered":"Colapinto not guaranteed to finish season with Alpine, says Briatore"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>After months of speculation, it was relatively unsurprising when <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2025\/05\/14\/franco-colapinto-aims-to-get-on-the-pace-quickly-at-alpine\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\">Franco Colapinto<\/a> replaced Jack Doohan mid-season.<\/p>\n<p>Alpine&#8217;s multi-year contract with the Argentine, which was signed in January, indicated their confidence in his abilities and potential for growth.<\/p>\n<p>What was unexpected, however, is when Alpine only guaranteed Colapinto five-races with the team.<\/p>\n<p>Like Doohan before him, the 22-year-old must deliver strong performances in a very short time frame.<\/p>\n<p>This is despite his significant contract with Team Enstone, which required Alpine paying a substantial fee to Williams to break him from his existing contract.<\/p>\n<p>With all this considered, the latest comments from <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2025\/05\/30\/alpine-aim-to-win-titles-by-2027-says-briatore\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\">Flavio Briator<\/a>e add another variable to the equation.<\/p>\n<h2>Colapinto must perform to keep Alpine seat<\/h2>\n<p>As mentioned previously, Alpine put in a lot of effort to sign Colapinto from Williams.<\/p>\n<p>The French team&#8217;s interest was first reported towards the end of 2024, before reaching an agreement at the beginning of this year.<\/p>\n<p>It was this deal with Colapinto, signed in January, that put <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2025\/05\/05\/jack-doohan-at-risk-of-losing-alpine-seat-before-imola\/\" target=\"_self\">Jack Doohan<\/a> under pressure even before round one in Australia.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"corH8ZoYSx1uL1nG6inlGg\" class=\"gie-single\" style=\"color: #a7a7a7; text-decoration: none; font-weight: normal !important; border: none; display: inline-block;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.gettyimages.com\/detail\/2217964194\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Embed from Getty Images<\/a><script>window.gie=window.gie||function(c){(gie.q=gie.q||[]).push(c)};gie(function(){gie.widgets.load({id:'corH8ZoYSx1uL1nG6inlGg',sig:'cVYxFT0M3SqcuoHiI4hYj8yo-ZR_dOgumWR_rLOPHt4=',w:'594px',h:'396px',items:'2217964194',caption: true ,tld:'com',is360: false })});<\/script><script src='\/\/embed-cdn.gettyimages.com\/widgets.js' charset='utf-8' async><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Because of this, it was seen as somewhat inevitable that the Australian would lose his seat after a handful of rounds &#8211; regardless of performance.<\/p>\n<p>Colapinto, however, was not anticipated to be under the microscope upon arrival at the Enstone-based outfit.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the team&#8217;s significant investment in signing and promoting him mid-season, <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2025\/05\/26\/briatore-deems-alpine-are-fundamentally-not-fast-enough\/\" target=\"_self\">Alpine<\/a> are not committing to keeping Colapinto in the car for the remainder of 2025:<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;Franco Colapinto \u2014 we need to wait one second to judge Franco,&#8221; <\/em>he told the media in Spain.<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;Monte Carlo, it was very boring and very annoying. Let\u2019s see. This is the first real race of Franco.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;Races [how many Colapinto will drive for Alpine] I don\u2019t know, honestly.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;I never tell five races, three races, four races, one race. We see.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;If Colapinto is performing he\u2019s driving the car. If not, we\u2019ll see.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;2025 is a year we need to prepare ourselves for 2026. So whatever experiment I need doing, we\u2019re doing.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;I don\u2019t know at this moment if Franco will stay for the season or not, but let\u2019s see. Depends on the performance.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;We\u2019re only looking at the performance \u2014 nothing else.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<h4>Thrown into the deep end<\/h4>\n<p>It was just under a year ago that Franco Colapinto was put alongside Alex Albon at <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2025\/05\/30\/why-williams-might-have-to-adjust-2025-upgrade-plans\/\" target=\"_self\">Williams<\/a> mid-season.<\/p>\n<p>The 22-year-old showed impressive speed and adaptability to score points on a handful of occasions &#8211; even outqualifying his more experienced teammate more than once.<\/p>\n<p>So far at Alpine, however, luck has not been on his side.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"G6vGbS-rTwhYjs_iB93L0Q\" class=\"gie-single\" style=\"color: #a7a7a7; text-decoration: none; font-weight: normal !important; border: none; display: inline-block;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.gettyimages.com\/detail\/2217961654\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Embed from Getty Images<\/a><script>window.gie=window.gie||function(c){(gie.q=gie.q||[]).push(c)};gie(function(){gie.widgets.load({id:'G6vGbS-rTwhYjs_iB93L0Q',sig:'R4ow-7YNC70g2cNDLjuWYLMwLPLObGUOUF07l0yiRUI=',w:'594px',h:'396px',items:'2217961654',caption: true ,tld:'com',is360: false })});<\/script><script src='\/\/embed-cdn.gettyimages.com\/widgets.js' charset='utf-8' async><\/script><\/p>\n<p>His engine failure in qualifying for the Spanish GP was just the newest page in Colapinto&#8217;s difficult F1 return, which has proved more difficult than the team anticipated.<\/p>\n<p>Colapinto has undoubtedly shown he is capable of delivering at a high level and fighting for points, which he did in similar circumstances at Williams last year.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, he was not under constant threat of being replaced when he was at <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2025\/02\/24\/james-vowles-reveals-huge-williams-resource-allocation-to-2026\/\" target=\"_self\">James Vowles&#8217; team<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This is a very real danger at Alpine, who have a large pool of reserve drivers at their disposal.<\/p>\n<p>Arguably the most senior of these reserves is Paul Aron, who finished third in last year&#8217;s Formula 2 Championship.<\/p>\n<p>To be clear, it would be premature to suggest that Colapinto is destined for the same fate as Jack Doohan.<\/p>\n<p>His contract with the team goes beyond this season, which makes a swap before the end of 2025 unlikely.<\/p>\n<p>Still, just because another driver swap is improbable does not make it impossible &#8211; as Alpine and Flavio Briatore have proven numerous times.<\/p>\n<p><em>Main photo: Sam Bagnall\/Sutton Images (via Alpine media gallery)<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>After months of speculation, it was relatively unsurprising when Franco Colapinto replaced Jack Doohan mid-season.
