{"id":34465,"date":"2025-05-30T09:10:48","date_gmt":"2025-05-30T13:10:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/?p=34465"},"modified":"2025-05-30T09:10:48","modified_gmt":"2025-05-30T13:10:48","slug":"alpine-aim-to-win-titles-by-2027-says-briatore","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2025\/05\/30\/alpine-aim-to-win-titles-by-2027-says-briatore\/","title":{"rendered":"Alpine aim to win titles by 2027, says Briatore"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2025\/05\/26\/briatore-deems-alpine-are-fundamentally-not-fast-enough\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\">Flavio Briatore<\/a> joined Alpine last year, it was clear he would be central in determining the team&#8217;s direction.<\/p>\n<p>Renault CEO Luca de Meo entrusted Briatore with addressing the team&#8217;s limitations and transforming them into a front-running team.<\/p>\n<p>Aside from the team&#8217;s double-podium in Brazil, it cannot be said Alpine have been especially competitive over the last twelve months.<\/p>\n<p>This year in particular has been difficult for the Enstone team, who are currently second to last in the F1 standings.<\/p>\n<p>Irrespective of the team&#8217;s current fortunes, Flavio Briatore continues to set aggressive targets.<\/p>\n<h2>Briatore sets medium-term expectations for Alpine<\/h2>\n<p>Since Renault rebranded to become Alpine in 2021, there have been relatively frequent changes in the team&#8217;s senior management.<\/p>\n<p>Team principals (Abiteboul, Budkowski, Szafnauer, Rossi, Oakes) have entered and left the doors of Enstone more than any other F1 team.<\/p>\n<p>For obvious reasons, this instability has been attributed to the team&#8217;s failure to become front-runners.<\/p>\n<p>To some degree, there is merit to this perspective.<\/p>\n<p>The French outfit&#8217;s leaders are historically replaced before they can implement any of their desired changes.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"041iVJMhSxd6yqVeQzO0xQ\" class=\"gie-single\" style=\"color: #a7a7a7; text-decoration: none; font-weight: normal !important; border: none; display: inline-block;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.gettyimages.com\/detail\/2217811092\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Embed from Getty Images<\/a><script>window.gie=window.gie||function(c){(gie.q=gie.q||[]).push(c)};gie(function(){gie.widgets.load({id:'041iVJMhSxd6yqVeQzO0xQ',sig:'7_U2QAJKPNx5qNNziw_j7N58IXX-_knGNu2AmxaHrs0=',w:'594px',h:'396px',items:'2217811092',caption: true ,tld:'com',is360: false })});<\/script><script src='\/\/embed-cdn.gettyimages.com\/widgets.js' charset='utf-8' async><\/script><\/p>\n<p>At the same time, nothing has fundamentally changed at Alpine across these senior changes.<\/p>\n<p>Resources are not necessarily an issue for <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2025\/05\/07\/alpine-sign-colapinto-on-5-race-deal-as-they-assess-our-options\/\" target=\"_self\">Alpine<\/a>, especially in the context of F1&#8217;s budget cap.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, their biggest limitations are their infrastructure and personnel, which still lag behind other teams.<\/p>\n<p>Even other midfield squads, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2025\/05\/27\/adrian-newey-reiterates-aston-martin-emphasis-on-2026\/\" target=\"_self\">Aston Martin<\/a> and Williams, have been more aggressive in investing for the future.<\/p>\n<p>With this in mind, it will take more than a new team principal to change Alpine&#8217;s fortunes.<\/p>\n<p>Still, Flavio Briatore (Executive Advisor and acting team principal since Oakes&#8217; departure) insists that Alpine can make rapid progress:<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;In 2026, we can win races, I guarantee it,&#8221;<\/em> he told Le Monde, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thescore.com\/formula1\/news\/3293189\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">per ESPN<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;And in 2027, we want to be title contenders.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;The easiest way to win is to sign Max Verstappen, but we can&#8217;t. So we have to work with what we&#8217;ve got.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;Choosing to switch to Mercedes power was a very difficult decision, but in this sport, to win, you need to have the same tools as the others.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;For a million reasons rooted in the past, we were at a disadvantage in that area.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a id=\"OB50B-qOTTV8WvXpHm2xog\" class=\"gie-single\" style=\"color: #a7a7a7; text-decoration: none; font-weight: normal !important; border: none; display: inline-block;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.gettyimages.com\/detail\/2217804684\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Embed from Getty Images<\/a><script>window.gie=window.gie||function(c){(gie.q=gie.q||[]).push(c)};gie(function(){gie.widgets.load({id:'OB50B-qOTTV8WvXpHm2xog',sig:'UNEJDIQsgmZpkxeyJAPoLW2ngAAdOdNg2iS-pE80nFk=',w:'594px',h:'396px',items:'2217804684',caption: true ,tld:'com',is360: false })});<\/script><script src='\/\/embed-cdn.gettyimages.com\/widgets.js' charset='utf-8' async><\/script><\/p>\n<h4>Can Alpine make the necceesary changes?<\/h4>\n<p>From a medium-term perspective, it will be curious to see how Alpine evolves.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2025\/05\/12\/pierre-gasly-wants-alpine-to-focus-on-2026-development\/\" target=\"_self\">2026<\/a> will be their first season as a customer team, with Mercedes engines set to power the French squad into the new regulations.<\/p>\n<p>Based on the last ten seasons, there is every reason to expect the German constructor to deliver a better engine than Renault would have.<\/p>\n<p>Simultaneously, Alpine&#8217;s voluntary reuisition of their manufacturer status could be a strategic blunder.<\/p>\n<p>They have lost the advantage of being able to develop every aspect of their challenger, and have outsourced a key aspect of performance elsewhere.<\/p>\n<p>Whilst this may be the pragmatic approach, it suggests a lack of confidence in the team&#8217;s own engine department.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps more importantly, it showcases a reluctance to make the required changes to become a big team in every sense of the word.<\/p>\n<p><em>Main photo: Peter Fox\/LAT Images (Alpine media gallery)<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When Flavio Briatore joined Alpine last year, it was clear he would be central in determining the team&#8217;s direction.
