despite recent obstacles.<\/p>\n<p>Confirmation that Madrid will enter the F1 calendar next season was bad news for Barcelona, given that having two races in <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2025\/05\/08\/ferrari-unlikely-to-bring-major-updates-until-spanish-gp\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\">Spain<\/a> is unlikely.<\/p>\n<p>Formula 1&#8217;s approach to selecting new venues is based on expanding the calendar to new corners of the globe.<\/p>\n<p>Growing international demand makes it more difficult for venues like Barcelona to remain part of the annual schedule.<\/p>\n<p>However, race organiser have not abandoned hope of securing a new contract with F1.<\/p>\n<h2>Barcelona fight to stay on calendar amidst Madrid GP arrival<\/h2>\n<p>The last few years have seen significant evolution of the F1 calendar.<\/p>\n<p>Spa, for example, arguably the most iconic circuit in the sport, has lost its permanent slot on the schedule.<\/p>\n<p>Despite signing a multi-year extension to stay in F1 until 2031, the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2024\/07\/26\/max-verstappen-receives-10-place-grid-penalty-for-belgian-gp\/\" target=\"_self\">Belgian GP<\/a> will be absent in 2028 and 2030.<\/p>\n<p>This is likely the beginning of a wider trend of circuit rotation &#8211; which will see certain tracks in the calendar on a semi-permanent basis.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"JJteS1PmTYBhEGv8m8pwFw\" class=\"gie-single\" style=\"color: #a7a7a7; text-decoration: none; font-weight: normal !important; who will face an uphill battle to stay on the calendar.<\/p>\n<p>However, should organisers manage to convince FOM that their facilities, heritage and financial package are too valuable to be overlooked, Barcelona could yet remain a part of the schedule.<\/p>\n<p>Jordi Valls, Deputy Mayor of Barcelona City Council, spoke about the future of the circuit:<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;We want it to be a great celebration of F1,&#8221;<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/es.motorsport.com\/f1\/news\/barcelona-evita-confirmar-renovacion-formula1-2025-clave\/10722119\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">es.motorsport.com<\/a> quotes him as saying.<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;At the same time, a platform to demonstrate our capacity for innovation, industry and talent.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;Barcelona has a great tradition in the world of motorsport.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;What we are looking for is not only to keep the Grand Prix, but also everything it represents for the city.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a id=\"Nhcez8HYTJpXgrzimawGwg\" class=\"gie-single\" style=\"color: #a7a7a7; text-decoration: none; font-weight: normal !important; border: none; display: inline-block;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.gettyimages.com\/detail\/2158457331\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Embed from Getty Images<\/a><script>window.gie=window.gie||function(c){(gie.q=gie.q||[]).push(c)};gie(function(){gie.widgets.load({id:'Nhcez8HYTJpXgrzimawGwg',sig:'GDhYUEtT-Hru6H9sy_3CODXo_pYWJu4PjlllOmo85mw=',w:'594px',h:'396px',items:'2158457331',caption: true ,tld:'com',is360: false })});<\/script><script src='\/\/embed-cdn.gettyimages.com\/widgets.js' charset='utf-8' async><\/script><\/p>\n<h4>Other circuits at risk<\/h4>\n<p>Of course, Barcelona is not the only venue with an expiring contract.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2025\/05\/05\/jack-doohan-at-risk-of-losing-alpine-seat-before-imola\/\" target=\"_self\">Imola<\/a>, which will host the seventh round of the season this weekend, is among the circuits in jeopardy of losing their calendar slot.<\/p>\n<p>The Italian circuit made its return to the calendar in 2020 during the pandemic, as one of many circuits that were rapidly selected to put the F1 season together.<\/p>\n<p>Five years later, though, Imola could find itself as the latest casualty of the rapidly growing demand to host Grand Prix.<\/p>\n<p>The recent announcement of <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2025\/05\/05\/hamilton-told-vasseur-dont-be-so-sensitive-after-miami-radio\/\" target=\"_self\">the Miami GP&#8217;s<\/a> contract extension until 2041, alongside news of Belgium&#8217;s new rotational status, are a reminder that traditional circuits have no guarantee of keeping their slots.<\/p>\n<p>New circuits arriving to the schedule will inevitably result in some venues missing out.<\/p>\n<p>Despite expanding the calendar to a record-breaking 24 races this year, tracks will still be left out.<\/p>\n<p>The Dutch Grand Prix is also at risk of losing its place on the calendar, adding to the list of traditional circuits that are making way of street tracks.<\/p>\n<p>Returning to Barcelona, circuit organisers are currently in negotiations in a context that would suggest the odds are against them.<\/p>\n<p>Still, there is at least some hope the will secure the historic venue&#8217;s place in F1.<\/p>\n<p><em>Main photo:\u00a0Peter Fox\/Getty Images<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Organisers of the Barcelona circuit are working to continue on the F1 calendar beyond 2026 &#8211;
