Although George Russell is expected to extend his Mercedes contract, the British driver – like most drivers – is understood to be exploring his options.<\/p>\n

Per the latest reports, George Russell and Red Bull<\/a> team principal Christian Horner have held “informal” talks over recent weeks.<\/p>\n

Whilst this certainly does not mean a blockbuster move is imminent, this report underscores the unpredictable nature of the market.<\/p>\n

Mercedes happy with Russell and Antonelli, insists Toto Wolff<\/h2>\n

For obvious reasons, Russell is regarded as an integral part of the Mercedes project – both within and outside the team.<\/p>\n

His results this season (currently the only driver to finish 5th or above in every competitive session) have underscored his abilities.<\/p>\n

Because of this, it is probable that Russell and Mercedes will agree to continue their partnership beyond 2026.<\/p>\n

Last weekend in Jeddah, Toto Wolff<\/a> dismissed suggestions he is still pursuing Max Verstappen.<\/p>\n

Speculation about Wolff’s Verstappen interest can be traced back to 2024 – when the Mercedes team principal was vocal about his admiration for the Dutchman.<\/p>\n

However, the 53-year-old is singing a very different tune this year.<\/p>\n

Understandably, Wolff and Mercedes insist are satisfied with their driver combination of Russell and Kimi Antonelli<\/a>.<\/p>\n

With the Silver Arrows widely expected to produce the best engines for the 2026 regulations, a new contract between Russell and Mercedes appears a straight-forward move at first glance.<\/p>\n

George Russell in no rush to agree new contract<\/h3>\n

Indeed, a fresh deal would be a win-win for both parties.<\/p>\n

Both Mercedes and Russell are ready to capitalise when the next generation of F1 cars arrive in 2026.<\/p>\n

Then again, there are several variables to consider in the driver market.<\/p>\n

When speaking to the media last weekend, George Russell<\/a> was relatively nonchalant about his contractual situation.<\/p>\n

He made some curious comments about F1 contracts as a whole:<\/p>\n

“From my side, there is literally no stress, no worries whatsoever,”<\/em> he told Sky Sports.<\/p>\n

“I think when it comes to contracts, everyone gets so excited about it.<\/em><\/p>\n

“And the fact is, drivers have had contracts – and if they don’t perform they get booted out.<\/em><\/p>\n

“For drivers, performance is our currency, that’s what you’ve got. If you perform, everything’s good.<\/em><\/p>\n

“So I’m just excited to go racing this weekend, focus on performance, and the future sorts itself out.”<\/em><\/p>\n

Russell’s relaxed comments speak to the leverage he has in negotiations – thanks to his consistently strong output.<\/p>\n

With Mercedes seen as early favourites for 2026, the 27-year-old is expected to use his strong position to cement his position at the Brackley squad.<\/p>\n

The latest reports from The Race<\/a> – about informal discussions between Russell and Red Bull – do not automatically indicate a shift in the British driver’s relationship with Mercedes.<\/p>\n

Then again, there are still many unknown variables that could complicate matters over the coming months.<\/p>\n

Perhaps the most significant is Max Verstappen’s exit clause<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Verstappen’s future<\/h4>\n

Rumours about Max Verstappen’s future have dominated the first few weeks of the season.<\/p>\n

If Red Bull cannot unlock more performance on the RB21, this speculation will only intensify as 2025 progresses.<\/p>\n

Even if the Austrian outfit can make significant improvements this year, their prospects for the 2026 regulations<\/a> are uncertain.<\/p>\n

All indications suggest their power units will be a few steps behind the established manufacturers next year.<\/p>\n

Of course, this does not doom Red Bull’s chances when the new regulations arrive.<\/p>\n

What it does mean, however, is that Verstappen will be vigilant of any opportunities to reposition himself for the long-term.<\/p>\n

Whilst Red Bull insist Verstappen will fulfil his contract (which ends in 2028), exit clauses could be activated under certain conditions.<\/p>\n

Christian Horner’s team are conscious of this – which is why it is logical they familiarise themselves with any potential options.<\/p>\n

To be clear, this is not to say Russell will join Red Bull.<\/p>\n

There is no evidence to suggest Russell will not sign a new deal with Mercedes in the coming months.<\/p>\n
