falling victim to gravel that was pushed out on track.<\/p>\n<p>Owing to the conditions on race day, assessing the AM25&#8217;s actual pace is difficult.<\/p>\n<p>According to team principal Andy Cowell, however, there are <strong>reasons for Aston Martin to be cautiously optimistic<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h4>Aston Martin show flashes of pace in Melbourne<\/h4>\n<p>The early stages of qualifying were promising for <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2025\/01\/17\/how-aston-martin-plan-to-reach-90-upgrade-success-rate\/\" target=\"_self\">Aston Martin<\/a>, with Fernando Alonso setting one of the best times Q1.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately for the British squad, <strong>Alonso suffered floor damage at the beginning of Q2<\/strong> &#8211; costing him performance and preventing him from reaching the final stage.<\/p>\n<p>Although extrapolating from such a small sample size is difficult, the AMR25 looks more competitive than many suspected after testing.<\/p>\n<p>Alonso was certainly being held up by <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2024\/09\/02\/gasly-will-see-what-i-can-do-to-reverse-magnussen-race-ban\/\" target=\"_self\">Gasly<\/a> on Sunday &#8211; though his crash obviously <strong>makes it difficult to draw conclusions<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Regardless, Aston appear in a far less precarious position than some outlets reported after pre-season.<\/p>\n<p>The team confirmed the AMR25&#8217;s progress in Melbourne, both in terms of performance and drivability.<\/p>\n<p>Moreover, <strong>Aston Martin have not been mentioned<\/strong> as a team likely to suffer from <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2025\/03\/19\/f1-news-teams-brace-for-impact-ahead-of-new-fia-regulations\/\" target=\"_self\">the FIA&#8217;s incoming technical directive<\/a> (to be implemented this weekend).<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"SYVaewoFRSRVacEpybI6Gw\" class=\"gie-single\" style=\"color: #a7a7a7; in an AMR24 that was competitive in qualifying.<\/p>\n<p>It was the team&#8217;s long-run pace that created concern, <strong>before an upgrade package in Imola derailed Aston Martin&#8217;s campaign<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Because of this, establishing a strong foundation for 2025 is crucial.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking after the chequered flag in Melbourne, team principal Aston Martin discussed the developments in the pipeline:<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;We have <strong>upgrades we are currently working on<\/strong>,&#8221;<\/em> he told <a href=\"https:\/\/as.com\/motor\/formula_1\/aston-martin-confirma-las-sospechas-n\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">as.com<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;We all have limitations in the CFS, wind tunnel and wind tunnel.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;So it&#8217;s a challenge to decide where to focus on to develop the car.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a id=\"it03293ERAdh7mDXu9ezWQ\" class=\"gie-single\" style=\"color: #a7a7a7; albeit in a limited capacity &#8211; won&#8217;t arrive in the next few months:<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;We do a mix,&#8221; <\/em>Cowell continued.<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;From Monday I&#8217;ll be in the factory <strong>to talk about the areas where we will focus on<\/strong> to find the most potential.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;Whether it&#8217;s development, reliability or procedural issues, there are details we can improve&#8230;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;Our feet are on the ground, we are working to find solutions. In Q1 we did good sectors, and later in Q2 &#8211; less so.
