Despite this, the scale of McLaren&#8217;s pace raised eyebrows across the grid.<\/p>\n<p>With its long sweeping corners and heavy emphasis on front-end grip, Shanghai should also play to the MCL38\u2019s strengths.<\/p>\n<p>However, the Sprint format could impact Sunday&#8217;s race. Nonetheless, his pace across the weekend was encouraging.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5069\" data-end=\"5339\">The Australian was pushing Norris hard and looked the faster of the two at times.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5069\" data-end=\"5339\">With the home pressure lifted, Piastri heads to China keen to convert speed into a strong points haul. If McLaren continues their form, do not be surprised if Piastri joins the victory fight.<\/p>\n<h3>Pressure is Mounting on Lawson<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"3669\" data-end=\"3968\"><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2024\/12\/29\/liam-lawson-driving-style-wont-be-an-excuse-at-red-bull\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\">Liam Lawson<\/a> experienced a poor debut weekend as Red Bull\u2019s second driver. A scrappy lap saw him exit in Q1 of qualifying.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3669\" data-end=\"3968\">A power unit issue compounded his misery, and Sunday\u2019s race offered little reprieve. He eventually crashed out when the rain intensified.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3970\" data-end=\"4195\">Christian Horner downplayed the criticism, citing the team\u2019s risky strategy to keep Lawson on slicks.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3970\" data-end=\"4195\">However, the reality is clear: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.formula1.com\/en\/latest\/article\/verstappen-admits-chinese-gp-weekend-poses-a-lot-of-unknowns-as-he-assesses.53m3XNwnCTfsY2H6UE2PHK\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Red Bull<\/a> remains a difficult environment for any Verstappen teammate.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4197\" data-end=\"4474\">Lawson will be keen to bounce back, but Shanghai poses another challenge.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4197\" data-end=\"4474\">With little track experience and reduced running due to the Sprint format, it is a tough weekend for a reset. While Leclerc salvaged P8, Hamilton\u2019s Ferrari debut ended with a sole point received for P10.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2193\" data-end=\"2519\">It was not the opener either wished for. The car\u2019s form fluctuated throughout the weekend, raising questions about whether this was a Melbourne-specific issue or a sign of deeper problems.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2193\" data-end=\"2519\">It is not all bad, however. Shanghai&#8217;s unique layout and variable weather offer a chance for redemption.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2521\" data-end=\"2772\">If Ferrari hopes to fight for wins this year, they need to unlock more consistent performance, and fast. Time will tell.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"2521\" data-end=\"2772\">Will Williams Remain in the Fight?<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"2830\" data-end=\"3149\">One of the biggest surprises of the opening race was <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2025\/03\/11\/williams-manage-expectations-amidst-positive-signs-from-fw47\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\">Williams<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2830\" data-end=\"3149\">Despite lamenting that their focus is on 2026, the British team had all eyes on them.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2830\" data-end=\"3149\">Carlos Sainz made his debut, and while he did not finish the Grand Prix, <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2025\/03\/16\/carlos-sainz-became-alex-albons-strategist-in-australia-vowles\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\">James Vowles highlighted<\/a> how his expertise on the pit lane helped the team achieve big points.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2830\" data-end=\"3149\"><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2024\/11\/21\/alex-albon-looking-forward-to-challenge-of-facing-carlos-sainz\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\">Alex Albon<\/a>\u2019s qualifying effort, where he outpaced both Ferraris, demonstrated how far the team has come.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2830\" data-end=\"3149\">His eventual fifth-place finish underlined that all may not be as it seems regarding the top four&#8217;s usual title fight.
