Plenty of storylines to keep an eye out for, of course, including how McLaren will perform here.

Mercedes and Red Bull dominated the field since the 2010s. McLaren only reemerged as a top team once again over the recent years, and saw the fruits of their labour with a Constructors’ Championship in 2024.

If they could carry over that momentum into this season, this might signal a new dominant team – this time in orange.

With how close the pack was heading to the final round last year, McLaren surely aimsto defend their reign. As the papaya camp may see themselves in the multi-team title fight alongside Ferrari, Red Bull, and Mercedes.

Adapting to Albert Park

Pre-season testing ground in Bahrain was vastly different compared to Melbourne. Hence, teams set different requirements for their cars to suit the characteristics of the track.

Knowing Ferrari’s huge record of wins in Australia, they might be the favourites to win here. But given how McLaren has been formidable since Miami last year, they might be able to defeat their Italian rival.

A combination of fast straights and technical sections, Albert Park’s track surface is much bumpier. It is a street circuit that offers quite limited opportunities for overtaking with widened corners.

However, we will only know the team’s true pace once the chequered flag falls in Melbourne.

READ MORE: F1: History of the Australian Grand Prix

First Set of Upgrades Released

For performance related reasons, McLaren equipped their MCL39s with a redesigned winglet of the front brake duct, which enhances aerodynamic performance downstream.

Adjusting to the fast straights and technical sections of the circuit, the papaya outfit introduces a low cooling front brake duct. The component allows transforming the reduced brake cooling demands to generate more aerodynamic performance.

They also made a couple of tweaks to their beam wing, where more loaded single and double element beam wings are devised. Both of these beam wings would aid in improving aerodynamic efficiency.

So far, the weekend has started on a high for the Woking-based team. In FP1, Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri were P1 and P4 respectively, while in FP2, Piastri and Norris were P2 and P3 respectively, behind Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc.

Oscar Piastri – The New Home Hero?

Since Daniel Ricciardo’s exit from F1 midway in 2024, Australia retains the two currently active drivers in Piastri and Jack Doohan.

Piastri, who recently signed a multi-year deal with the Woking team, carries much higher expectations. Thanks to his contributions to the team’s championship last season via his two race wins and eight podiums.

Benefiting from the retirements of eight drivers, he scored his first points of his F1 career here in 2023.

Despite Australia being part of the championship calendar since 1985, there have been no Australian driver winning their home race.

Ricciardo was really close to achieving this, made it to the podium back in 2014. This was before he had to give away his second place due to a technical infringement. Piastri hopes to break this streak soon.

YOU MAY ALSO LIKE: PREMA Racing’s Melbourne Strategy: Can They Dominate the Season Opener?

The Possible Strategies

Pirelli reported that the previous season of the Australian GP saw them using two-stop strategies. Both McLaren drivers opted for mediums and hards.

Though for this year’s edition, things will be slightly different. As autumn is approaching in Australia, the weather may be quite unpredictable. There may also be huge swings in the temperatures with possible rain. Full wets might make an appearance here.

As the saying goes in F1, pre-season testing is no indicator on how the season will turn out. But if McLaren continues to be impressive as they seemed to be in the testing, they may have the chance to walk away with the first race victory of the season.

READ NEXT: The 2025 F1 Season Begins in Australia

Main Photo

Credit: IMAGO / IPA Sport

Recording Date: 14.03.2025

Reigning constructor champions McLaren are set to compete in the first race of the season with one goal in mind: to conquer the weekend and set the tone for a dominant year.
