{"id":30933,"date":"2025-02-25T15:29:45","date_gmt":"2025-02-25T20:29:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/?p=30933"},"modified":"2025-02-25T15:29:45","modified_gmt":"2025-02-25T20:29:45","slug":"aston-martin-pursuit-of-verstappen-would-be-logical-marko","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2025\/02\/25\/aston-martin-pursuit-of-verstappen-would-be-logical-marko\/","title":{"rendered":"Aston Martin pursuit of Verstappen would be &#8220;logical&#8221; &#8211; Marko"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Considering that Max Verstappen is fresh off a fourth consecutive world title for <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2025\/02\/14\/red-bull-will-not-abandon-2025-if-they-are-in-a-title-battle\/\" target=\"_self\">Red Bull<\/a>, some might be perplexed about the consistent rumours suggesting the Dutchman could leave the team.<\/p>\n<p>Specifically, several reports have indicated that Aston Martin are interested in Verstappen&#8217;s services.<\/p>\n<p>Although there is nothing official or confirmed in these suggestions, they have created some uncertainty heading into 2025.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2025\/01\/04\/helmut-marko-red-bull-hopeful-max-factor-will-continue-in-2025\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\">Helmut Marko<\/a>, senior advisor at Red Bull, has commented on this speculation.<\/p>\n<h2>Why Verstappen and Aston Martin rumours continue<\/h2>\n<p>On paper, Max Verstappen&#8217;s Red Bull contract means he will race for the Milton Keynes squad until 2028.<\/p>\n<p>Verstappen and Red Bull have been the winning combination for several years now, claiming Championships in both dominant and hotly contested campaigns.<\/p>\n<p>However, this does not mean the Austrian outfit is without flaw or weakness.<\/p>\n<p>At the beginning of last year, for example, controversy surrounding Christian Horner destabilised the team.<\/p>\n<p>Several key players, from Christian Horner to Helmut Marko and Jos Verstappen, were caught in this internal power struggle.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"EO4suEzCRexysQzYFpMysQ\" class=\"gie-single\" style=\"color: #a7a7a7; text-decoration: none; font-weight: normal !important; border: none; display: inline-block;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.gettyimages.com\/detail\/2181978825\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Embed from Getty Images<\/a><script>window.gie=window.gie||function(c){(gie.q=gie.q||[]).push(c)};gie(function(){gie.widgets.load({id:'EO4suEzCRexysQzYFpMysQ',sig:'uuXH9SRqXSGlPh-4pgsfQSnXYjt6iKeBohrK181hHM0=',w:'594px',h:'396px',items:'2181978825',caption: true ,tld:'com',is360: false })});<\/script><script src='\/\/embed-cdn.gettyimages.com\/widgets.js' charset='utf-8' async><\/script><\/p>\n<p>To some degree, Red Bull&#8217;s dominant start to the 2024 season helped overcome some of this friction.<\/p>\n<p>Still, the Milton Keynes outfit must continue to deliver Verstappen with winning machinery if they want to prevent him from exploring other options.<\/p>\n<p>Arguably the biggest source of uncertainty are the 2026 regulations.<\/p>\n<p>As Red Bull prepare to build their own power units for the first time, their position at the front is uncertain.<\/p>\n<p>This has fuelled suggestions that Max Verstappen could be tempted by other options. Aston Martin is the team most strongly linked with the Dutchman.<\/p>\n<p>With <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2025\/02\/23\/how-aston-martin-plan-to-optimise-adrian-newey\/\" target=\"_self\">Adrian Newey<\/a> and Honda working to transform Aston Martin into a strong manufacturer team in 2026, there is reason for optimism at the Silverstone factory.<\/p>\n<h4>Marko reacts to Verstappen speculation<\/h4>\n<p>In response to this threat, Red Bull&#8217;s Helmut Marko speaks with transparency.<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;If you have a Newey who certainly expresses his own ideas and wishes on the driver side,&#8221; <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsport-total.com\/formel-1\/news\/verstappen-aston-martin-was-ist-dran-an-der-milliarden-story-dr-marko-25022404\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">motorsport-total<\/a> quotes him as saying.<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;It would only be logical if Aston Martin tried to make Max an offer.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>However, Marko has downplayed reports that Aston Martin could make an offer of $1 billion. This massive figure, floated earlier this year, seems an unrealistic sum for any driver &#8211; even Max Verstappen.<\/p>\n<p>Worth noting in Aston&#8217;s case, of course, is that <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2025\/02\/19\/alonso-2025-aston-martin-is-90-different-to-predecessor\/\" target=\"_self\">Fernando Alonso<\/a> and Lance Stroll are on multi-year deals.<\/p>\n<p>This means, at least for the next few seasons, their places at the team should be secure.<\/p>\n<p>Still, for very different reasons, Aston Martin might deem that alternatives are needed for 2027 and beyond.<\/p>\n<p>For the foreseeable future, Verstappen will be linked with the British outfit.<\/p>\n<p>Helmut Marko is not alarmed, now putting too much into some of the reports from this year:<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;I doubt whether it is really that high, especially with Aston Martin&#8217;s current share price. It is said to have been a high offer. But we do not know whether the offer really existed.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;No team could afford that, no matter who is behind it.
