A completely new generation of cars and engines present a massive unknown. With that said, there are more question marks at <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2025\/02\/07\/f1-news-red-bull-2025-car-will-have-small-operating-window\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\">Red Bull<\/a> than any other top team.<\/p>\n<p>For the first time in their history, Red Bull will produce their own F1 power units.<\/p>\n<p>After years of being powered to victory by Honda, there are concerns about Red Bull&#8217;s transition into a manufacturer team.<\/p>\n<h4>Reliability, performance fears emerge at Red Bull<\/h4>\n<p>A number of variables will make the next generation of 2026 cars a step into the dark F1.<\/p>\n<p>From new power units, to sustainable fuels and fresh aerodynamic regulations, there are many uncertainties.<\/p>\n<p>Partly because of this, teams must be strategic with how they split resources between 2025 and 2026. Within a few months, the majority of the field will have shifted their focus to their 2026 new cars.<\/p>\n<p>However, it is the new engines that promise to be most impactful on the pecking order.<\/p>\n<p>Over the past few seasons, there has been virtually no difference between Ferrari, Mercedes and <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2025\/01\/29\/f1-news-honda-admit-we-are-struggling-with-2026-engine\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\">Honda power units<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In terms of horsepower, electrical efficiency and reliability, these manufacturers are all delivering at a similar level. Even Renault, who are currently the worst engine in F1, are giving up just three tenths per lap.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"UmiWxIT8TaxZiU2aiD7y-g\" class=\"gie-single\" style=\"color: #a7a7a7; text-decoration: none; font-weight: normal !important; border: none; display: inline-block;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.gettyimages.com\/detail\/1052525574\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Embed from Getty Images<\/a><script>window.gie=window.gie||function(c){(gie.q=gie.q||[]).push(c)};gie(function(){gie.widgets.load({id:'UmiWxIT8TaxZiU2aiD7y-g',sig:'m846OwhgCJSMRTETZhbBJ8XhxD4_vE_VtlP-VIcuJoA=',w:'594px',h:'396px',items:'1052525574',caption: true ,tld:'com',is360: false })});<\/script><script src='\/\/embed-cdn.gettyimages.com\/widgets.js' charset='utf-8' async><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Whilst three tenths is not insignificant, it is nothing compared to the engine disparities that could emerge in 2026.<\/p>\n<p>Much at the beginning of the hybrid era in 2014, when Mercedes engines blew Renault-powered <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2025\/02\/01\/f1-news-red-bull-play-catch-up-in-2025-development-race\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\">Red Bull<\/a> out of the water, the upcoming regulations could see massive gaps emerge between different power units.<\/p>\n<p>The consensus for some time has been that Red Bull&#8217;s new engine division (Red Bull Powertrains) and <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2025\/01\/01\/f1-news-why-audi-f1-have-a-mountain-to-climb-ahead-of-2026\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\">Audi<\/a> will be a few steps behind the established manufacturers.<\/p>\n<p>More recently, a report from Italian outlet Autosprint suggests that performance and reliability concerns are emerging with the new Red Bull engine.<\/p>\n<p>Though drawing conclusions at this stage would be premature, it would not be a surprise if the Milton Keynes team are playing catchup.<\/p>\n<p>Putting together the infrastructure and personnel to create a competitive engine department takes time.<\/p>\n<p>Audi, who could be in the same boat as Red Bull, already anticipate they will suffer an engine deficit in 2026.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"M1qjE6q_TLZ4Gg2hajN05A\" class=\"gie-single\" style=\"color: #a7a7a7; text-decoration: none; font-weight: normal !important; border: none; display: inline-block;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.gettyimages.com\/detail\/2149366218\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Embed from Getty Images<\/a><script>window.gie=window.gie||function(c){(gie.q=gie.q||[]).push(c)};gie(function(){gie.widgets.load({id:'M1qjE6q_TLZ4Gg2hajN05A',sig:'UbAfrw1ghk3aZuZL8S7YAoq6phGnewJycNy2nsmz66Y=',w:'594px',h:'396px',items:'2149366218',caption: true ,tld:'com',is360: false })});<\/script><script src='\/\/embed-cdn.gettyimages.com\/widgets.js' charset='utf-8' async><\/script><\/p>\n<h4>Controlling the narrative<\/h4>\n<p>To be clear, Red Bull could still make a relatively smooth transition into 2026 and produce a strong engine.<\/p>\n<p>However, in combination with the departure of several high-profile personnel, making new power units adds another element of uncertainty to their medium and long-term trajectory.<\/p>\n<p>Rob Marshall and <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2025\/02\/07\/adrian-newey-reveals-chances-of-working-on-astons-2025-car\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\">Adrian Newey<\/a> are among the heavy-hitters to leave Christian Horner&#8217;s squad.<\/p>\n<p>In the context of their stagnant development last season, the upcoming season is of the upmost importance for Red Bull.<\/p>\n<p>At the surface level, defending Max Verstappen&#8217;s Championship crown is obviously the top priority.<\/p>\n<p>Beyond this, it is also essential that Red Bull prevent the narrative of a potential decline to take root.<\/p>\n<p>There are already suggestions that <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2025\/01\/15\/verstappen-rb21-performance-is-more-relevant-than-my-teammate\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\">Verstappen<\/a> is set to explore his options at the end of 2026 &#8211; a year when the Austrian team&#8217;s reign of dominance is most likely to conclude.<\/p>\n<p>Whilst there is no reason to get carried away with suggestions the Dutchman is on his way out at Red Bull, the 4-time Champion will obviously want the fastest machinery.<\/p>\n<p>If they fail to recover from last year&#8217;s decline, the pressure will be even greater heading into 2026.<\/p>\n<p>For all of their Championships in recent years, there are no guarantees in F1. Red Bull, like every team, must constantly prove themselves and raise the standard.<\/p>\n<p>As <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2025\/02\/11\/lewis-hamilton-positive-feedback-from-first-ferrari-runs\/\" target=\"_self\">Ferrari<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2025\/02\/02\/mclaren-join-ferrari-in-all-out-2025-development-approach\/\" target=\"_self\">McLaren<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2025\/02\/07\/george-russell-mercedes-optimistic-about-2025-step-forward\/\" target=\"_self\">Mercedes<\/a> progress, their margin for error is becoming smaller and smaller.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Whilst the upcoming\u00a0 F1 season promises to have several teams at the front, nobody knows what the 2026 regulations will bring.
