Not satisfied with last year&#8217;s Championship result, McLaren have a clear objective for this season &#8211; to surprise rivals with their innovations.<\/p>\n<p>The British team would be forgiven for taking a relatively conservative approach this winter.<\/p>\n<p>Their outstanding rate of development over the last eighteen months has put them in a very strong position heading into 2025.<\/p>\n<p>However, McLaren have determined that a cautious approach could be a death sentence for their title aspirations.<\/p>\n<h2>Why McLaren are taking risks<\/h2>\n<p>Immediately after the conclusion of last year&#8217;s Championship, McLaren team principal Andrea Stella spoke candidly about his 2025 targets.<\/p>\n<p>For all the progress his squad have achieved, last season taught the Woking team one crucial lesson &#8211; having the fastest car is not enough to guarantee success.<\/p>\n<p>Only by dominating rivals can a Championship be comfortably grasped with both hands.<\/p>\n<p>After all, despite the MCL38 being the fastest car in 2024, <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2025\/02\/01\/f1-news-red-bull-play-catch-up-in-2025-development-race\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\">Max Verstappen<\/a> managed to retain the F1 crown.<\/p>\n<p>A combination of McLaren&#8217;s operational mistakes and moments of brilliance from Verstappen allowed the Dutchman to claim a fourth world title.<\/p>\n<p>Well aware that last year&#8217;s drivers Championship could have been theirs, McLaren are leaving no stone unturned for their 2025 challenger.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2025\/02\/01\/why-the-start-of-2025-is-critical-for-hamilton-and-leclerc\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\">Much like Ferrari<\/a>, their closest rivals in 2024, the papaya outfit are committed to an altogether new package.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"M74rROpHSoRzGR7BA-r2Og\" class=\"gie-single\" style=\"color: #a7a7a7; text-decoration: none; font-weight: normal !important; border: none; display: inline-block;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.gettyimages.com\/detail\/2187888460\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Embed from Getty Images<\/a><script>window.gie=window.gie||function(c){(gie.q=gie.q||[]).push(c)};gie(function(){gie.widgets.load({id:'M74rROpHSoRzGR7BA-r2Og',sig:'UUVTVIq_9oQ-6ueF7LKgmEB00a9E-2Mk_NG6iAD9dOk=',w:'594px',h:'396px',items:'2187888460',caption: true ,tld:'com',is360: false })});<\/script><script src='\/\/embed-cdn.gettyimages.com\/widgets.js' charset='utf-8' async><\/script><\/p>\n<h4>Andrea Stella: We cannot be satisfied<\/h4>\n<p>Alongside performance-related considerations, McLaren are taking such risks because they fundamentally believe a big step forward is necessary to compete for both titles:<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;This is something that we have repeatedly said internally at McLaren,&#8221;<\/em> Stella explained to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsport.com\/f1\/news\/mclaren-we-must-raise-the-bar-if-we-want-to-fight-for-2025-f1-title\/10678203\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">motorsport.com<\/a> at the end of 2024.<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;Let&#8217;s look at what Ferrari have been able to do. Responding to some wobbles in the middle of the season, delivering a large amount of performance.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;And now they&#8217;ve had, in our knowledge. Aside from it&#8217;s short-term benefits, these alterations served as the of Ferrari&#8217;s revised 2025 concept.<\/p>\n<p>It is understood the Italian team&#8217;s latest challenger will feature a brand new front suspension.<\/p>\n<p>Whilst McLaren&#8217;s front suspension will remain the same, they <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2025\/01\/01\/mclaren-reveal-brave-risk-with-2025-car\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\">reached similar big-picture conclusions to their Maranello rivals<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Having climbed the field so rapidly since 2023, the papaya outfit trust themselves to out-develop the competition one more time.<\/p>\n<p>Not by taking incremental steps &#8211; but instead by catapulting themselves to new heights with innovative solutions.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Andrea Stella&#8217;s McLaren are working on bold solutions for their 2025 challenger.
