Their 2022 Championship triumph over Ferrari, in large part, was thanks to the updates they introduced as the campaign progressed.<\/p>\n<p>However, the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2024\/12\/09\/red-bull-reveal-what-could-be-their-kryptonite-in-2025\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\">team&#8217;s fortunes in 2025<\/a> could be negatively impacted by last season&#8217;s uncharacteristically poor trajectory &#8211; and a failure to overcome fundamental limitations.<\/p>\n<h2>Red Bull have doubts about their 2025 car<\/h2>\n<p>All teams are being faced with the difficult task or balancing their resources into 2025.<\/p>\n<p>The significance of the 2026 regulations will force many teams to stop development on this year&#8217;s cars relatively early.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately for Red Bull, they are in a compromises position compared to their immediate rivals. Ferrari and McLaren, for example, switched their focus to 2025 development earlier than the Austrian team.<\/p>\n<p>Unlike Christian Horner&#8217;s personnel, Ferrari and McLaren were not wrestling any fundamental issues with their development.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2024\/09\/02\/ferrari-upgrades-catapult-them-into-championship-contention\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\">Ferrari&#8217;s Monza update package<\/a>, and McLaren&#8217;s upgrades from Miami, established a strong baseline. Heading into this season, both teams can be relatively confident about their changes.<\/p>\n<p>Moreover, having committed earlier to their 2025 projects, last year&#8217;s title protagonists are expected to make large-scale changes.<\/p>\n<p>The same cannot be said of Red Bull, who continued working on their 2024 package well into the final rounds.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"UWPBtN6fTgpT6GvNvkhFhA\" class=\"gie-single\" style=\"color: #a7a7a7; text-decoration: none; font-weight: normal !important; border: none; display: inline-block;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.gettyimages.com\/detail\/2188140096\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Embed from Getty Images<\/a><script>window.gie=window.gie||function(c){(gie.q=gie.q||[]).push(c)};gie(function(){gie.widgets.load({id:'UWPBtN6fTgpT6GvNvkhFhA',sig:'Xh_NtDMUKGINJQ7T8pxh-p6kD6llJti8Z_E0TnFA610=',w:'594px',h:'425px',items:'2188140096',caption: true ,tld:'com',is360: false })});<\/script><script src='\/\/embed-cdn.gettyimages.com\/widgets.js' charset='utf-8' async><\/script><\/p>\n<p>To some degree this was an understandable choice, given Max Verstappen&#8217;s Championship aspirations.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps more concerningly, though, <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2025\/01\/16\/red-bull-admit-to-emergence-of-correlation-issues-in-2024\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\">Red Bull went several months without unlocking any performance<\/a> with the RB20.<\/p>\n<p>After introducing a set of upgrades at the Japanese GP in Suzuka, which worked as intended, it would take almost 6 months for the next upgrades (in Singapore) to actually generate improvement.<\/p>\n<p>For the first time since 2022, the Austrian team&#8217;s wind tunnel data was not reflected on track.<\/p>\n<p>This created significant uncertainty in Red Bull&#8217;s development plan, forcing them to introspect and re-evaluate their medium-term plans.<\/p>\n<p>After all, how could the team begin work on their 2025 car without understanding their existing problems?<\/p>\n<p><strong>READ MORE:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2025\/01\/31\/why-mclaren-enter-2025-with-crucial-advantages\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\">Why McLaren enter 2025 with crucial advantages<\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Red Bull&#8217;s correlation woes<\/h3>\n<p>Pierre Wache, Red Bull&#8217;s technical director, admitted that there are still concerns heading into 2025:<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;When you have a correlation issue, then for sure you are a little bit lost,&#8221; <\/em>he told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsport.com\/f1\/news\/why-red-bull-remains-sceptical-about-its-f1-development-tools\/10691673\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">motorsport.com<\/a><em>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;You cannot trust your tools any more. And when you cannot trust your tools any more, then you have to find a way to modify your tools to find that correlation again.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Fine margins separated the top four teams in 2024, especially in the second half of the campaign.<\/p>\n<p>Because of this, Ferrari and McLaren have committed to making bold changes to evolve last year&#8217;s concept and create a gap to their rivals.<\/p>\n<p>A problem Red Bull face, which will be difficult to overcome, is a lack of confidence their 2025 car will perform as anticipated.<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;Then you are lost in terms of having doubts about everything you are doing&#8230;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;You have doubts about the results that your tools give you,&#8221; <\/em>Wache concluded.<\/p>\n<p>Although <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2025\/01\/15\/verstappen-rb21-performance-is-more-relevant-than-my-teammate\/\" target=\"_self\">Max Verstappen<\/a> managed to secure last year&#8217;s drivers title, he certainly wasn&#8217;t the beneficiary of the fastest car in Formula 1.<\/p>\n<p>If anything, the Dutchman spent the majority of 2024 fighting against a superior McLaren and rejuvenated Ferrari.<\/p>\n<p>Unless Red Bull can recover from last year&#8217;s inherent drivability issues (which <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2025\/01\/29\/adrian-newey-red-bull-did-not-share-my-development-concerns\/\" target=\"_self\">Adrian Newey flagged before his departure<\/a>), their chances for success this year will be limited.<\/p>\n<p>To some extent, Christian Horner&#8217;s team deserve credit for being so dominant whilst ushing such an old wind tunnel &#8211; which is set to be replaced later this year.<\/p>\n<p>Still, until their new infrastructure comes into play, Red Bull could find themselves on the defensive.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Ordinarily, Red Bull&#8217;s mid-season development is a tremendous strength.
