{"id":29738,"date":"2025-01-21T08:00:06","date_gmt":"2025-01-21T13:00:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/?p=29738"},"modified":"2025-01-20T20:48:54","modified_gmt":"2025-01-21T01:48:54","slug":"last-seat-at-dale-coyne","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2025\/01\/21\/last-seat-at-dale-coyne\/","title":{"rendered":"Last Seat at Dale Coyne Racing up for Grabs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The last seat at Dale Coyne also happens to be the last seat for the 2025 grid and several drivers are still vying for their chance to secure a spot.<\/p>\n<h2>One Down, One to Go: Dale Coyne Racing&#8217;s Open Seat<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dale Coyne Racing, known for its tendency to delay driver selections until the last minute, once again holds the final open slot on the 2025 grid.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The teams\u2019 announcement that Indy NXT 2024 runner-up Jacob Abel would be a full-time driver for the upcoming season, leaves one more spot to be filled.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s a long list of well-deserving candidates for this one seat, here are just a few drivers to watch for.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Candidate #1: Linus Lundqvist<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the names in the conversation for the last seat at Dale Coyne is IndyCar\u2019s 2024 Rookie of the Year, <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2023\/04\/25\/what-happened-to-indy-nxt-champions-linus-lundqvist\/\" target=\"_self\">Linus Lundqvist<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In his first full-time seat driving with Chip Ganassi Racing, he blew everyone\u2019s expectations out of the water.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Along with his first career pole position at <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2024\/06\/09\/road-america-2024-how-will-power-ended-his-2-year-win-drought\/\" target=\"_self\">Road America<\/a>, he achieved four top-10 finishes, including a standout performance at Milwaukee Race 1, where he led for 29 laps.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition, he landed on the podium twice at two completely different tracks: the road course at Barber Motorsports Park and the oval configuration of <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsport.com\/indycar\/news\/indycar-lundqvist-st-louis-podium\/10645869\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Worldwide Technology Raceway<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By the end of the season, he finished 16th in points, two spots behind his teammate and second-year driver Marcus Armstrong.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">His strong performance in his first season should\u2019ve saved him a spot with CGR. <span class=\"css-lcd2g5 e178251s14\"><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2024\/05\/21\/who-are-the-rookie-class-for-the-108th-indy-500\/\" target=\"_self\">Kyffin Simpson<\/a> will take over the No. 8 CG Honda in the upcoming season.<\/span> They must\u2019ve seen some promise in Simpson despite having a best finish of just 12th in the opening round at St. Petersburg.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Without a spot at CGR, he now has to join the fight for the final spot but the promise he showed makes a strong case.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/0YQL99DxOpg?si=r6tnrJPKyfuNcP-f\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>READ MORE: <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2023\/04\/25\/what-happened-to-indy-nxt-champions-linus-lundqvist\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\">What happened to Indy NXT champions? Linus Lundqvist<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<h3><b>#2: Rinus VeeKay<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>The mention of <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2024\/09\/23\/indycar-2025-off-season-updates\/\" target=\"_self\">Rinus Veekay<\/a> in this quest for a seat is surprising, especially since he wasn&#8217;t anticipated to be involved.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the end of the 2024 season, Ed Carpenter Racing announced the conclusion of its partnership with VeeKay after five seasons. The decision might have surprised the Dutchman as there were conversations for a re-sign earlier this season.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2024\/12\/06\/a-look-back-the-2023-indianapolis-500\/\" target=\"_self\">VeeKay<\/a> began with ECR in 2020. During his tenure with the team, he achieved four podium placements, two pole positions, and one victory.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Throughout five seasons, he exhibited commendable consistency, concluding the championship standings in 14th, 12th, 12th, 14th, and 13th positions. He finished the 2024 season as the leader in completed laps and secured five top-ten finishes in the final eight races.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With his consistency, past success, and years of experience, Veekay could be the ideal veteran candidate to lead Dale Coyne and help rookie, Abel transition to IndyCar.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>#3: Toby Sowery<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sowery made his IndyCar debut racing with Dale Coyne at <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.autosport.com\/indycar\/news\/sowery-to-return-to-coyne-for-toronto-and-portland-indycar-rounds\/10635551\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mid-Ohio<\/a> then in Toronto and Portland.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">His first race was particularly impressive with an effort that saw him make the most on-track passes with 10 to charge from 24th on the grid to 13th \u2013 matching a season-best result for DCR.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>His performance at Mid-Ohio impressed <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.autosport.com\/indycar\/news\/sowery-to-return-to-coyne-for-toronto-and-portland-indycar-rounds\/10635551\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">team owner Dale Coyne<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot only was Toby a pleasure to work with, but he was up to speed immediately after not having driven one of these cars in over a year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0The 29-year-old spent most of the 2024 season racing in the LMP2 class of the IMSA Michelin Endurance Cup. He finished second at the Rolex 24 At Daytona and raced and won LMP2 in the Asian Le Mans Series.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Brit is an INDY NXT by Firestone veteran, in his first season in <\/span>2019 he finished third in the championship after seven podium finishes, including a win at Portland International Raceway. He then returned to the series in 2021 and 2023.<\/p>\n<p>Although Sowery doesn&#8217;t have the same amount of experience that the other two above, getting to race with DCR in 2024 allowed him to get to know the team and the team got a look at what he could do in their Dallara.<\/p>\n<h3>Wildcard Candidates<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are a few wildcards in this conversation of who gets the last seat at Dale Coyne. These are the drivers who don&#8217;t necessarily have any IndyCar experience but have tested before the new year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The first driver is<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2024\/12\/28\/formula-2-all-time-wins-list\/\" target=\"_self\"> Enzo Fittipaldi<\/a>. The Brazilian driver took part in an IndyCar test at Sebring International Raceway with Dale Coyne Racing in Oct. 2023 and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">also recently took part in another IndyCar test with Arrow McLaren at The Thermal Club, this past November.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Both Enzo and <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2022\/09\/22\/f1-roundtable-who-should-haas-sign-for-2023\/\" target=\"_self\">Pietro Fittipaldi<\/a> could be up for the spot with the older one having the upper hand after finishing 19th in the standing last season driving Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing.<\/p>\n<p>Another name that we could potentially see is <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2024\/07\/31\/logan-sargeant-linked-to-indycar-drive-with-prema\/\" target=\"_self\">Logan Sargeant<\/a>. Since Williams dropped the American native, his name has been frequently mentioned in discussions about securing a seat in IndyCar.<\/p>\n<p>Sargeant got his first taste of the series in November completing 84 laps with Meyer Shank Racing at Thermal Club.
