Despite this, Herta is unsure about his prospects in Formula 1.<\/p>\n<h2>Herta &#8220;tired&#8221; of persistent F1 links<\/h2>\n<p>Since the start of his career, few have doubted Colton Herta&#8217;s speed. The young American became one of <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2025\/01\/03\/colton-herta-f1-hopes-depend-on-2025-indycar-results\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\">IndyCar&#8217;s most exciting prospects<\/a> when he joined the series in 2019.<\/p>\n<p>His most recent campaign for Andretti, finishing 2nd in the Championship, was confirmation of Herta&#8217;s potential.<\/p>\n<p>Even before last season, there was plenty of demand for the youngster&#8217;s services. As Pierre Gasly prepared to leave VCARB (then AlphaTauri) in 2022, Red Bull were forced to find a replacement.<\/p>\n<p>Initially, it was Colton Herta &#8211; rather than Nyck de Vries &#8211; who was their first choice. The US team have already established they want at least one American driver, another positive development for the 24-year-old.<\/p>\n<p>However, Herta admits that links to Formula 1 come with mixed emotions:<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;I\u2019ve kind of been dragged around in this talk for, it feels like, half a decade now,&#8221;<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsportweek.com\/2025\/01\/15\/colton-herta-tired-of-f1-carrot-amid-cadillac-link\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Motorsport Week<\/a> quotes him as saying.<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;I\u2019ve had the carrot in front of me for a while. I\u2019m kind of tired of that being the case.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;And I just want to drive at this point and focus on IndyCar this year and focus on winning a championship. And if something arises out of that, I\u2019d have to think about it.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;It\u2019s still not a for sure thing. On paper, despite his reservations, Herta is still one of the front-runners.<\/p>\n<p>With that said, there are several unknowns in this year&#8217;s driver market. The likes of <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2024\/12\/28\/valtteri-bottas-already-in-talks-with-cadillac-f1-ahead-of-2026\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\">Valtteri Bottas<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2024\/12\/06\/zhou-guanyu-cadillac-f1-becoming-a-viable-destination-for-2026\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\">Zhou Guanyu<\/a>, casualties from last year&#8217;s contract season, will be among those working to secure a Cadillac deal.<\/p>\n<p>Bottas brings over a decade of F1 experience to the table &#8211; not to mention several race wins and podiums.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Zhou&#8217;s strong finish to last year was a reminder that he is a dependable pair of hands when given competitive machinery.<\/p>\n<p>His connections with Cadillac&#8217;s team principal, Graeme Lowdon, should also help his chances in negotiations ahead of 2026.<\/p>\n<p>As the year develops, wild cards like <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2025\/01\/01\/yuki-tsunoda-these-teams-could-be-his-red-bull-escape-routes\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\">Yuki Tsunoda<\/a> could even make themselves available for the American team&#8217;s project.
