Twelve months later, Komatsu&#8217;s leadership has been instrumental to their progress &#8211; particularly in terms of development.<\/p>\n<h2>Komatsu: Haas now integrate driver feedback<\/h2>\n<p>Easily the biggest weakness that plagued Haas prior to Komatsu&#8217;s promotion was their mid-season development.<\/p>\n<p>Unlike other teams who would unlock performance over the course of a season, Haas often found themselves standing still.<\/p>\n<p>In the world of Formula 1, being stagnant means you are effectively going backwards. Considering the hyper-competitive nature of the midfield, ineffective upgrades can be catastrophic.<\/p>\n<p>This pattern often kept <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2024\/12\/28\/why-haas-f1-desperately-need-and-deserve-reinforcements\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\">Haas<\/a> towards the back of the field, unable to sustain their momentum from the beginning of the year.<\/p>\n<p>However, things were very different in the 2024 season. (Photo by Sam Bagnall \/ LAT Images)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Speaking in a recent interview, Ayao Komatsu outlined the changes he introduced to create this improvement.<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;That&#8217;s another thing I focused on,&#8221;<\/em> he told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=nD1fMciPUsQ&amp;t=1475s\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">EPARTRADE<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;Up until last year [the start of 2024] I didn&#8217;t feel that driver feedback was listened to very well, and integrated into our development strategy.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;So that&#8217;s one of the things I really wanted to change.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;That led to certain, let&#8217;s say, people in certain positions having a certain structure. To make sure that drivers are in the loop.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<h4>Haas enter unknown territory<\/h4>\n<p>Last year&#8217;s 7th place finish was Haas&#8217; best result in the F1 constructors standings since 2018. (Photo by Mark Sutton \/ LAT Images)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>For an outfit that have historically struggled to secure good sponsorship, Haas can be credited with several landmark agreements over the last six months.<\/p>\n<p>However, this Toyota agreement is not enough on its own. As it stands, <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2024\/12\/12\/haas-on-the-edge-due-to-low-number-of-staff-komatsu\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\">Komatsu has hundreds fewer personnel<\/a> at his disposal than any other team.<\/p>\n<p>This includes Sauber, who have the fewest staff on the grid after Haas.<\/p>\n<p>If Gene Haas intends to put his team in a position to challenge the top 5 teams, more investment is urgently needed.<\/p>\n<p>That being said, the fact a financial injection is now the remaining piece of the puzzle is a huge positive.<\/p>\n<p>Successfully signing <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2024\/12\/06\/alpine-double-down-on-ocon-swap-were-not-here-to-be-nice\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\">Esteban Ocon<\/a>\u00a0from a manufacturer team like Alpine is evidence that Haas are an increasingly attractive destination in F1.<\/p>\n<p>Considering some of their previous drivers, Ayao Komatsu will be pleased to see a greater pool of talent interested in joining his squad.<\/p>\n<p>For the first time in over half a decade, Haas go into a season with relatively high expectations.
