{"id":28775,"date":"2024-12-21T08:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-12-21T13:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/?p=28775"},"modified":"2024-12-21T09:21:06","modified_gmt":"2024-12-21T14:21:06","slug":"herta-history-at-cota","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2024\/12\/21\/herta-history-at-cota\/","title":{"rendered":"A Look Back: History Made at COTA with Herta Victory"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Eighteen-year-old rookie Colton Herta made history at COTA in 2019 by winning the INDYCAR Classic.<\/p>\n<h2><b>Colton Herta: Part of the History Books<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In just his third race in his IndyCar career, <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2024\/12\/18\/colton-hertas-career\/\" target=\"_self\">Colton Herta<\/a> made it into IndyCar\u2019s long history book with his win at <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.indycar.com\/News\/2018\/11\/11-12-INDYCAR-excited-going-to-COTA\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Circuit of the Americas<\/a>. The victory at 18 years and 359 days old, set the record for youngest driver to win an Indy car race.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here\u2019s a look back to the historic weekend five years ago.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Qualification:<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There was a lot of hype and excitement surrounding the race even before it began.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was the first time IndyCar made its way to the Austin, Texas track. It was also the first time that American open-wheel cars and F1 raced at the same track during the same season since 2006.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The 3.41-mile, 20-turn permanent road course would make things exciting, not only in the race but also in qualifying and it did not disappoint.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Herta ultimately secured fourth in the No. 88 Harding Steinbrenner Racing Honda, starting ahead of Felix Rosenqvist and Scott Dixon in row 3 and just behind Ryan Hunter-Reay, <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2023\/01\/07\/revisiting-alexander-rossi-2016-indy-500-win\/\" target=\"_self\">Alexander Rossi<\/a>, and pole-sitter <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2024\/06\/09\/road-america-2024-how-will-power-ended-his-2-year-win-drought\/\" target=\"_self\">Will Power<\/a> who set a time of 1 minute, 46.0177 seconds (115.792 mph).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The pole marked Power&#8217;s second consecutive pole position to start the 2019 season and the 56th of his 15-year career.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This qualification for Herta was a bounce back from his previous session at the opening round in <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.indycar.com\/News\/2019\/03\/03-09-St-Pete-qualifying-final-Will-Power\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">St. Petersburg<\/a> where he was penalized for qualifying interference, surrendering his two best laps by rule after a \u201crookie mistake\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The group of drivers that rookie, Herta, will be around at the start of the race have years of experience over him but he wasn\u2019t going to let that stop him from his determination of earning his first IndyCar victory.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>The Race:<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On Sunday the green flag is waved marking the start of the 60-lap race.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Herta wasn&#8217;t looking to make history at COTA but he knew he wanted to give it a chance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He knew it wasn\u2019t going to be easy, he <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">needed everything to go his way if he had a fighting chance to be on the top step. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And that\u2019s exactly what happened.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The race looked like it was going to be another pole to victory for Power as he was leading for the first 44 laps under green flag conditions. Then a late crash changed everything in how the race played out.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/dStwHNH0Vs4?si=wJWA67PnSq6wvedB\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Herta had made his way to second place from fourth and he did a phenomenal job of holding his position at the front of the field. Even when did Rossi get by he continued to match and maintain a strong third.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Herta&#8217;s strong performance and the team&#8217;s unique strategy were rewarded with some luck.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On Lap 44 James Hinchcliffe and Rosenqvist made contact. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The incident brought out a caution and the timing of it couldn\u2019t have been better for Herta as he stopped just prior, while the leaders of Power and Rossi still needed to make their final pit stop.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The 18-year-old surged from third to first as the frontrunners came in for fuel and tire changes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The race resumed with 10 laps to go and with the 2017 Series champion, <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2024\/12\/06\/a-look-back-the-2023-indianapolis-500\/\" target=\"_self\">Josef Newgarden<\/a> right behind, Herta needed to get a good start. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not only did he do that, but he managed to pull a 2.7-second gap from the Penske driver to take the checkered flag for the first time.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-style: italic;\">\u201cWe were not expecting (to win). I think we were going to get a podium (top-three finish) \u2013 I think we had the pace for that \u2013 but holy crap, man! \u2026 It\u2019s spectacular!\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-style: normal;\">Herta&#8217;s skill in managing the restart and pulling ahead highlighted his victory, especially given the differences in teams and experience.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>The Aftermath:<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>Making history at COTA was just a bonus for Herta as he just wanted to be on the long list of IndyCar winners, just like his dad Bryan Herta.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-style: italic;\">\u201cJust to be up with the names of people that have won (a) race, I&#8217;m going to live and die an Indy car winner, which is spectacular in itself,\u201d Herta said. \u201cYeah, it&#8217;s a great record at a young age. To be standing up here kind of feels surreal.&#8221;<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The 2019 IndyCar was the first and last time a race was held at COTA. In 2020, the race was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and it hasn\u2019t been on the IndyCar Series schedule since then.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Now at 25-year-old, Herta has 99 career starts and nine wins to his name with plenty more the on way, but you can bet he will never forget his first one.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Eighteen-year-old rookie Colton Herta made history at COTA in 2019 by winning the INDYCAR Classic.
