The problems that limited the RB20&#8217;s progression are also threatening to Red Bull on the backfoot next season.<\/p>\n<h2>Correlation and wind tunnel inaccuracies are an emerging Red Bull concern<\/h2>\n<p>Despite finishing 63 points ahead of Lando Norris in the standings, <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2024\/11\/03\/max-verstappen-furious-with-bullsht-red-flag-timing\/\" target=\"_self\">Max Verstappen<\/a> did not have the fastest car for most of the season.<\/p>\n<p>After the upgrades introduced in Japan, Red Bull went several months were they failed to deliver more performance on the RB20.<\/p>\n<p>The package brought to the Hungarian GP, which failed to perform as the wind tunnel suggested, was the beginning of an extended period of stagnation at Milton Keynes.<\/p>\n<p>Although the team managed to take a step forward later in the season, they still lost significant ground to Ferrari and McLaren.<\/p>\n<h4>Marko: Red Bull&#8217;s simulation tools don&#8217;t work<\/h4>\n<p>Speaking after the Abu Dhabi GP, <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2024\/11\/30\/helmut-marko-for-us-its-all-about-max\/\" target=\"_self\">Helmut Marko<\/a> explained why Red Bull still have problems to overcome.<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;If they [McLaren] take this form into next year and we don&#8217;t improve, then it will be even tighter than it is today,&#8221;<\/em> he told Sky Germany.<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;It&#8217;s not a completely new start because the regulations are stable.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;But our weaknesses are still that we get to the track and the correlation between all the simulations, the wind tunnel and reality doesn&#8217;t work.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;And the car is in a much too narrow window in which it works. Our technical group has a lot of work to do.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a id=\"PaVRqkH3TNd6rFqBGxrgNw\" class=\"gie-single\" style=\"color: #a7a7a7; text-decoration: none; font-weight: normal !important; border: none; display: inline-block;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.gettyimages.com\/detail\/2188855745\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Embed from Getty Images<\/a><script>window.gie=window.gie||function(c){(gie.q=gie.q||[]).push(c)};gie(function(){gie.widgets.load({id:'PaVRqkH3TNd6rFqBGxrgNw',sig:'Thy5FnKxdbeeI5BoTA4AT0U28Hh71DlbxGrz_3wmkHA=',w:'594px',h:'396px',items:'2188855745',caption: true ,tld:'com',is360: false })});<\/script><script src='\/\/embed-cdn.gettyimages.com\/widgets.js' charset='utf-8' async><\/script><\/p>\n<h4>Ferrari, McLaren and Mercedes on the rise<\/h4>\n<p>Thanks to the other top teams dropping the ball in 2023, <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2024\/12\/07\/liam-lawson-set-to-replace-sergio-perez-at-red-bull\/\" target=\"_self\">Red Bull<\/a> enjoyed a huge advantage twelve months ago &#8211; one they themselves didn&#8217;t anticipate.<\/p>\n<p>Technical Director, Pierre Wache, has admitted that this year&#8217;s competition is what they were expecting to face last season.<\/p>\n<p>After successfully undoing their previous mistakes and establishing a better aerodynamic platform, McLaren and Ferrari have comprehensively out developed the Austrian squad.<\/p>\n<p>Formula 1 is always a relative game, so perhaps it is unfair to say Red Bull were fortunate that other teams experienced such difficulties in 2023.<\/p>\n<p>However, it is becoming increasingly clear that Red Bull are finding it harder to add more performance to their car.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2024\/07\/21\/verstappen-leads-concerns-about-red-bull-upgrades\/\" target=\"_self\">Max Verstappen spent large parts of the season complaining about the RB20&#8217;s characteristics<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Only partial solutions were found, and they were introduced in the dying parts of the season.<\/p>\n<p>For a team who seemed to have a superior understanding of these regulations just twelve months ago, this is a worrying trend.<\/p>\n<p><strong>READ MORE:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2024\/12\/07\/liam-lawson-set-to-replace-sergio-perez-at-red-bull\/\" target=\"_self\">Liam Lawson expected to replace Sergio Perez<\/a><\/p>\n<h4>Red Bull must overcome a familiar problem<\/h4>\n<p>Helmut Marko&#8217;s comments about the poor simulator to track correlation are extremely relevant.<\/p>\n<p>Red Bull&#8217;s inability to unlock more performance could be more about a fundamental limitation than a temporary blip.<\/p>\n<p>The same wind tunnel troubles that have haunted Aston Martin and Mercedes (though Mercedes have largely overcome this issue) will add an element of uncertainty to their winter development.<\/p>\n<p>With four teams capable of competing for victories, the margin for error is smaller than ever.<\/p>\n<p>Red Bull cannot rely on Verstappen to produce magic and put the car in positions it doesn&#8217;t deserve to be in for an entire season.<\/p>\n<p>Their challenge is to prove their concept <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2024\/09\/09\/christian-horner-admits-red-bull-have-hit-the-ceiling\/\" target=\"_self\">isn&#8217;t as limited as Christian Horner and other personnel have admitted<\/a> it could be.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>For all the F1 news stories about Red Bull&#8217;s driver line-up, there are genuine concerns about their 2025 package.
