He points towards the incident between <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2024\/12\/05\/george-russell-people-have-been-bullied-by-max-for-years\/\" target=\"_self\">Russell and Verstappen<\/a> in Qatar qualifying as an important case study.<\/p>\n<h2>Alonso: Sometimes you wonder if you would have the same treatment<\/h2>\n<p>There are few drivers who speak their mind as freely as Fernando Alonso.<\/p>\n<p>The Double World Champion isn&#8217;t afraid of talking about hot topics &#8211; including the latest row between George Russell and Max Verstappen.<\/p>\n<p>Although Alonso doesn&#8217;t have anything to saw about Russell and Verstappen individually, he&#8217;s made some comments about the penalty <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2024\/12\/05\/george-russell-25-of-verstappens-engineers-tried-to-leave\/\" target=\"_self\">Verstappen<\/a> received in Qatar.<\/p>\n<p>The Spaniard argues that the penalty given to the Dutchman in qualifying is not applied consistently.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking to the media in Abu Dhabi, he elaborated on this issue:<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;I&#8217;m OK, I&#8217;m relaxed. I&#8217;m just saying that sometimes when they apply a rule or penalty for someone &#8211; then why we don&#8217;t follow that path?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;In the next races, [it&#8217;s] not applicable anymore. You know, depending sometimes on which nationality you are.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;If I do that, I would not receive the same benefit as George did there.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;Or maybe my incident in Australia. Contactless, 30 metres away from me, someone goes off track and I get the penalty.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;So sometimes you wonder, if you switch the positions and you are the other guy, if you will have the same treatment.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a id=\"fe_t7bWBThVzKmA9YJn2Fg\" class=\"gie-single\" style=\"color: #a7a7a7; text-decoration: none; font-weight: normal !important; border: none; display: inline-block;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.gettyimages.com\/detail\/2187732409\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Embed from Getty Images<\/a><script>window.gie=window.gie||function(c){(gie.q=gie.q||[]).push(c)};gie(function(){gie.widgets.load({id:'fe_t7bWBThVzKmA9YJn2Fg',sig:'OVKsOnODM0Z9lANaUBY9NZGMgQi7ofDC3gBYSGAmBPI=',w:'594px',h:'396px',items:'2187732409',caption: true ,tld:'com',is360: false })});<\/script><script src='\/\/embed-cdn.gettyimages.com\/widgets.js' charset='utf-8' async><\/script><\/p>\n<h4>Penalty decisions under persistent scrutiny<\/h4>\n<p>The stewards have become a major talking point in recent weeks, with various incidents receiving huge scrutiny.<\/p>\n<p>A number of <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2024\/11\/09\/stella-mclaren-still-believe-norris-cota-penalty-isnt-correct\/\" target=\"_self\">clashes between Lando Norris and Max Verstappen<\/a> across 2024 have heightened the pressure on the stewards to be consistent in their decisions.<\/p>\n<p>More recently, the 10 second stop-and-go penalty given to Norris in the Qatar GP has dominated headlines.<\/p>\n<p>In a sport where the stakes are so high, it is inevitable that penalties are regularly analysed and discussed. This is especially true when &#8211; as F1 has seen this season &#8211; the field becomes more competitive and every place counts.<\/p>\n<p>Fernando Alonso, whilst one of F1&#8217;s most outspoken figures, is hardly the only driver to voice their concerns.<\/p>\n<p>Throughout the season, there has been plenty of conversation about the rules of engagement in wheel-to-wheel battles.<\/p>\n<p>Looking ahead to next season, the FIA will look to establish a clearer set of guidelines for drivers to follow and stick to.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Fernando Alonso argues the stewards are inconsistent in how they award penalties.
