But before he embarks on this new journey, it’s the perfect time to reflect on the moments that made him a seven-time World Champion.

For seven weeks, we’ll relive the defining seasons of Hamilton’s career, celebrating his unparalleled achievements and revisiting the path that established him as one of the greatest drivers in history.

In week one, we explored his breakthrough year in 2008, The Birth of a Champion. In week two, we revisited the dawn of his Mercedes dynasty in 2014, The Dawn of a Dynasty.

Now, in week three, we take a closer look at 2015, the year Hamilton truly solidified his status at the top of Formula 1.

2015: A Championship of Perfection

When the 2015 Formula 1 season began, Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes were already champions in the making.

The success of 2014 was still fresh in everyone’s minds, but Hamilton wasn’t content just yet. His hunger for more, combined with Mercedes’ continuous improvement, set the stage for an even more dominant campaign.

With an iconic driver lineup of Hamilton and Nico Rosberg, Mercedes set the 2015 grid alight. They won 16 of 19 races for a second year running.

For Hamilton, 2015 was a statement season. He defended his championship in style, showcasing his extraordinary skill, resilience, and tactical brilliance.

For a second consecutive season, he never once finished outside of the points, with his lowest result being a P6, finishing on the podium in every other race. In comparison to his three retirements in 2014, Hamilton had only one retirement in 2015.

As Hamilton completed his final race for Mercedes at the 2024 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, we reflect on one of the incredible seasons he shared with the Silver Arrows.

A Mixed Bag: Dominance, Setbacks, and Comebacks

Hamilton started the 2015 season with a comfortable win in Australia. He started the Melbourne race in pole, set the fastest lap and saw the chequered flag first – a near grand slam as he only lost the lead to Rosberg when he went into the pits.

In Malaysia, the Brit took pole in a wet Q3 session, with Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel and Rosberg behind him. However, on race day, Vettel was the fastest man on track.

After pit stops, Hamilton was unable to close the gap to the Ferrari out front. This allowed Vettel to take his 40th career win, and his first with Ferrari. Hamilton and Rosberg were P2 and P3 respectively.

Hamilton brought Mercedes their second one-two of the season at the Chinese Grand Prix, where they were able to nullify the Ferrari threat behind them.

The Bahrain Grand Prix was another fierce battle between Ferrari and Mercedes, but Hamilton held his ground, winning ahead of Kimi Raikkonen and Rosberg.

Embed from Getty Images

Hamilton’s start in Barcelona wasn’t ideal, as he dropped to second behind Vettel and came under pressure from Valtteri Bottas’ Williams. Rosberg led the pack, while Hamilton radioed his team to notify them that passing Vettel on track seemed “impossible.”

Mercedes switched him to a three-stop strategy, but a wheel nut issue during his first stop left him trailing Rosberg, who made a cleaner pit stop.

Hamilton pushed hard, setting fastest laps, and after Rosberg’s second stop on lap 46, Hamilton moved into the lead. However, a 19-second gap to Rosberg after Hamilton’s own final stop on lap 51 of 66 dampened his chances for a win.

He held onto second ahead of Vettel but couldn’t close the gap to Rosberg, who took his first win of the season. The top four finished in the order they started: Rosberg, Hamilton, Vettel, and Bottas.

Monaco, however, was another case of misfortune for Hamilton. He took pole position but lost a 20-second lead during a botched pit stop under a safety car period. Rosberg won his third consecutive Monaco Grand Prix, with Hamilton finishing third just behind Vettel.

Bouncing Back

Hamilton bounced back with a strong win in Canada, leading for all but one lap. The victory extended his championship lead over teammate Rosberg, who finished second. It was a much-needed win following the disappointment in Monaco.

Hamilton started the Austrian Grand Prix from pole but lost the lead to Rosberg at the first corner. Rosberg maintained control throughout, aside from pit stop cycles, and secured victory by over three seconds.

Embed from Getty Images

Hamilton finished second, comfortably ahead of Williams’ Felipe Massa. Despite not winning, the two-time world champion equalled an impressive record in Austria. He matched Jack Steward’s record of leading at least one lap for 17 consecutive races.

READ MORE: Ferrari’s 2024 Season Review: ‘A Big Step Up, With Room for Growth’

Triumph on Home Soil

Hamilton’s home weekend started well, with the Mercedes driver taking pole, just a tenth over his teammate. But on race day, the start was a startling one for the home crowd.

Both Mercedes drivers had poor gateways, allowing the Williams drivers to take the first and third immediately.

On Lap 20, Hamilton opted for the undercut, and Bottas went into the pits himself soon after. Hamilton’s outlap however was fast enough to take him into the lead.

With Rosberg hot on his tail, Hamilton went into the pits for Intermediate tyres. The timing was perfect as the rain came on just then.

Hamilton was able to maintain his lead till the end, winning his home race for the third time in his career – and subsequently breaking the Jack Steward record.

Self-Inflicted Setbacks for the Silver Arrows

Hamilton secured pole in Hungary but faced a chaotic race. Poor starts from both Mercedes allowed Ferrari’s Vettel and Raikkonen to take the lead, with Hamilton dropping to P10 after running wide at Turn 6.

Climbing back through the field, Hamilton trailed Rosberg by mid-race but collided with Ricciardo during a late restart, damaging both cars. This incident earned Hamilton a drive-through penalty. Rosberg was later pushed further down after a puncture from a clash of his own with Ricciardo.

Despite recovering to P6, Hamilton and teammate Rosberg, who finished P8, endured a frustrating day, with Ferrari’s Vettel taking the victory.

Hamilton extended his lead over Rosberg to 21 points. Vettel meanwhile moved closer to the pair with 21 points between him and his fellow countryman.

A grand slam and top performances

Hamilton showcased stellar form in Belgium, winning comfortably from pole.

In Monza, he elevated his performance, achieving a Grand Slam by claiming pole, leading every lap, winning the race, and setting the fastest lap. This extended his championship lead to 53 points over Rosberg.

Embed from Getty Images

Singapore, however, marked a rare low for Mercedes. Hamilton retired due to a power loss while running fourth, the only DNF of his season, and Rosberg finished P4.

Hamilton rebounded strongly with three consecutive wins in Japan, Russia, and the USA.

In Japan, he passed Rosberg at the start to secure victory, while his teammate recovered to P2.

In Russia, Rosberg retired early due to a throttle issue, and Hamilton’s win widened his lead to 66 points – Vettel was P2 in the standings after Rosberg’s DNF.

The US GP in Austin sealed Hamilton’s third Drivers’ Championship on a dramatic weekend. Despite wet conditions and schedule disruptions, he passed Rosberg in the final stages for victory, with Vettel finishing third.

YOU MAY ALSO LIKE: History Made as F1 Academy Wraps Up a Thrilling Second Season

The final stint

In Mexico, Rosberg secured pole and won the race ahead of Hamilton, who had already sealed the Drivers’ Championship in the United States. Bottas completed the podium, as Mercedes continued to showcase their dominance.

At the Brazilian Grand Prix, Rosberg once again started from pole and claimed victory, with Hamilton finishing second and Vettel third. This win marked Rosberg’s fifth of the season, ensuring Mercedes maintained their unmatched momentum heading into the final race.

The Abu Dhabi Grand Prix capped off a record-breaking season. Rosberg achieved his sixth consecutive pole and converted it into a win. It was a Mercedes one-two with Hamilton in second and Raikkonen in third for Ferrari.

Mercedes ended the year with a staggering 703 points, setting records for most front-row lockouts and one-two finishes in a single season – a display of absolute supremacy in the turbo-hybrid era.

Embed from Getty Images

A Season to Remember

Lewis Hamilton’s 2015 season was a testament to his brilliance.

From early wins in Australia to his dramatic triumph in the United States, Hamilton’s ability to rebound from setbacks demonstrated a champion’s mentality.

With unmatched consistency and resilience, he secured his third World Championship.
