Confirmation is expected in the near future, with the American company committing to producing its own engines in 2028. Before then, they will join the 2026 grid as a customer team.<\/p>\n<h2>A matter of time until General Motors join the grid<\/h2>\n<p>On paper, news of GM&#8217;s arrival to Formula 1 is something of a surprise. After all negotiations between <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2024\/05\/02\/andretti-receive-support-from-us-congress-in-f1-entry-bid\/\" target=\"_self\">Andretti<\/a> and Liberty Media were at a standstill until recently.<\/p>\n<p>However, the increased involvement of General Motors &#8211; in addition to the activities of key players behind the scenes &#8211; has tipped the scale.<\/p>\n<p>Although the 2024 season is almost complete, the US brand has been preparing to enter F1 for several years.<\/p>\n<p>Andretti have already built the necessary infrastructure to compete in 2026 &#8211; including a wind tunnel that has been in operation for some time.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier in the year, Andretti officially opened a facility in Silverstone. <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2024\/04\/11\/andretti-plan-to-employ-over-1000-personnel-in-f1-team\/\" target=\"_self\">Hundreds of personnel have already been working on this project<\/a>, and recruitment has only intensified in recent months.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"lNyR5GkcQpNK5KF7JySp0Q\" class=\"gie-single\" style=\"color: #a7a7a7; text-decoration: none; font-weight: normal !important; border: none; display: inline-block;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.gettyimages.com\/detail\/2185831899\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Embed from Getty Images<\/a><script>window.gie=window.gie||function(c){(gie.q=gie.q||[]).push(c)};gie(function(){gie.widgets.load({id:'lNyR5GkcQpNK5KF7JySp0Q',sig:'erjkZqGtQYY-to6KI4b_PiKktQP-qOuDLs-LeZj0rmk=',w:'594px',h:'396px',items:'2185831899',caption: true ,tld:'com',is360: false })});<\/script><script src='\/\/embed-cdn.gettyimages.com\/widgets.js' charset='utf-8' async><\/script><\/p>\n<h4>GM F1 entry close to being confirmed<\/h4>\n<p>Speaking during FP3 in Las Vegas, McLaren&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2024\/10\/18\/zak-brown-mclaren-have-a-lot-of-questions-about-red-bull-trick\/\" target=\"_self\">Zak Brown<\/a> essentially confirmed that General Motors are incoming:<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;We&#8217;ve not been officially told anything,&#8221;<\/em> Brown told Sky Sports.<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;They seem to have big smiles on their face, so I believe an announcement is probably imminent.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;It will be exciting to have another manufacturer alongside Audi in our sport.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>As stated on numerous occasions over the last eighteen months, Andretti have worked under the assumption their F1 entry bid would be accepted.<\/p>\n<p>Therefore, all the necessary foundations are in place for the US team to be ready for the 2026 regulation changes.<\/p>\n<h4>New variables to consider<\/h4>\n<p>To be clear, <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2023\/11\/10\/andretti-and-general-motors-develop-new-strategy-to-earn-f1-entry\/\" target=\"_self\">General Motors<\/a> are now at the forefront of this entry bid. GM&#8217;s involvement has been instrumental in advancing talks with Liberty Media.<\/p>\n<p>With that said, the facilities and infrastructure put into place by Andretti will still be utilised.<\/p>\n<p>In this sense, the reported agreement between General Motors and FOM (F1 Management) is a win-win for all parties.<\/p>\n<p>Confirmation is expected in the near future, which would cement the expansion of the F1 grid for 2026.<\/p>\n<p>The driver market is another area to be impacted by this development.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2024\/11\/21\/zhou-guanyu-in-talks-with-several-f1-teams-for-2025-role\/\" target=\"_self\">Drivers currently without a seat<\/a> for next season will be positioning themselves as candidates for the imminent General Motors entry.<\/p>\n<p>As ever, LWOS will provide regular updates on all aspects of this developing story.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As reported previously by LWOS, General Motors are close to becoming F1&#8217;s 11th team.
