The British driver lost almost 20 points to <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2024\/11\/03\/max-verstappen-furious-with-bullsht-red-flag-timing\/\" target=\"_self\">Max Verstappen<\/a>, with the Dutchman delivering a masterclass from P17. However, Norris believes misfortune was his biggest obstacle at Interlagos.<\/p>\n<h2>Verstappen crushes McLaren title hopes<\/h2>\n<p>Heading into the Brazilian GP, there was every reason for Norris to close the gap to Verstappen in the standings.<\/p>\n<p>Starting from Pole Position, it seemed almost certain the British driver would cross the chequered flag ahead of Verstappen &#8211; who started from the back.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately for <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2024\/10\/29\/norris-could-have-fought-for-victory-without-verstappen-incident\/\" target=\"_self\">Norris<\/a>, the 69-lap race in Brazil saw <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2024\/11\/01\/max-verstappen-rant-i-have-the-wrong-passport-for-f1\/\" target=\"_self\">Max Verstappen<\/a> deliver an outstanding performance.<\/p>\n<p>A combination of brilliant pace, fantastic race craft and bold strategy calls allowed the Dutchman to claim victory.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, a series of mistakes and incorrect pit-stop calls were costly for Lando Norris.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"pJClstlFSpVbDxloXHfNeg\" class=\"gie-single\" style=\"color: #a7a7a7; text-decoration: none; font-weight: normal !important; border: none; display: inline-block;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.gettyimages.com\/detail\/2182687957\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Embed from Getty Images<\/a><script>window.gie=window.gie||function(c){(gie.q=gie.q||[]).push(c)};gie(function(){gie.widgets.load({id:'pJClstlFSpVbDxloXHfNeg',sig:'YytWQpDgVmVkDy080_Ameu5GS7kq6IiOX-R8z_FYqHY=',w:'594px',h:'396px',items:'2182687957',caption: true ,tld:'com',is360: false })});<\/script><script src='\/\/embed-cdn.gettyimages.com\/widgets.js' charset='utf-8' async><\/script><\/p>\n<h3>Norris: &#8220;Nothing we did wrong&#8221;<\/h3>\n<p>Perhaps most critically, the decision to stop as conditions worsened (and a red flag was likely) cost Norris track position.<\/p>\n<p>This was decisive in allowing Verstappen to take victory.<\/p>\n<p>However, from Norris&#8217; perspective, strategy did not cost him at Interlagos.<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;You can change your tyres under the red flag, that&#8217;s what the others did.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;Just unlucky, unfortunate &#8211; sometimes it just goes your way.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;Nothing we did wrong, I don&#8217;t care what people say. Staying out was not the right thing to do.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;It shouldn&#8217;t have been red flagged &#8211; but obviously there was a crash in the end which caused the red.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;That&#8217;s life sometimes. You take a gamble, it&#8217;s paid off for them. It&#8217;s not talent, it&#8217;s just luck.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;So yeah, a bit unlucky &#8211; that&#8217;s all.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>For the majority of the season, <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2024\/10\/23\/mclaren-hint-at-bigger-upgrades-for-upcoming-races\/\" target=\"_self\">McLaren&#8217;s<\/a> MCL38 has been the fastest car.<\/p>\n<p>Red Bull have battled with relatively stagnant development since May &#8211; often failing to match the performance unlocked by the Woking factory.<\/p>\n<p>Despite this, it is Max Verstappen who is within touching distance of a fourth World Championship.<\/p>\n<p>Not for the first time in 2024, Norris and McLaren fell short &#8211; whilst Red Bull and Verstappen rose to the challenge.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Lando Norris suffered a knockout blow to his Championship aspirations in Brazil.
