During an interview with BBC Radio 5, <strong>Ross Brawn<\/strong>, the F1 Managing Director of motorsports described the idea of having grid girls at F1 events as being currently \u201cunder strong review\u201d. Brawn said it was a &#8220;delicate topic&#8221; and some people consider that the concept of \u201cgrid girls\u201d has become outdated. <\/span><\/p>\n<h1>F1 Opens Discussion On &#8220;Grid Girls&#8221;<\/h1>\n<h3>Grid Girls in F1<\/h3>\n<p>&#8216;Grid girls&#8217; line the corridors when F1 drivers walk out to the podium. They stand in front of the grid slots on the grid with the drivers name-boards with their numbers. They are usually models who are dressed glamorously and are involved in various promotional activities during a Grand Prix weekend.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Formula 1 has new owners with <strong>Liberty Media<\/strong> acquiring the sport in 2017. <strong>Chase Carey<\/strong> became the new Chief Executive officer of the <strong>Formula One Group<\/strong>. Carey also commented on the topic by <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.com\/sport\/formula1\/42346331\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">saying<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that they need to \u201c<em>get as many points of view as possible and make a decision right for the future of the sport<\/em>\u201d. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If F1 were to drop the idea of grid girls, it would by no means be starting a trend. The <strong>World Endurance Championship (WEC)<\/strong> did away with the idea <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2015\/04\/04\/world-endurance-championship-drops-grid-girls\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">back in 2015<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Many soccer leagues around the world have a long standing tradition of letting kids walk out with the players for the national anthem. <strong>Formula E<\/strong> tested this idea with \u201cgrid kids\u201d earlier this year at the <strong>Montreal <\/strong>ePrix. This experiment was met with a positive response from the motrosport community after it was tested out.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Women&#8217;s Role in F1<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In recent years the <strong>FIA<\/strong> has run campaigns to try to expand their female demographic, especially in competition. In 2009, the FIA launched their <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fia.com\/fia-women-motorsport\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Women In Motorsport Commission\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and announced their <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fia.com\/news\/european-young-women-programme-announced-fia\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><i>European Young Women Programme<\/i><\/a><\/strong> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in late 2017. The most prominent female figure in F1 right now is <strong>Claire Williams. <\/strong>The Briton is the Deputy Team Principal of the Williams F1 team and effectively runs the team. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most sports do not use women in their scheme of things like F1, with the only real comparison being \u201csign girls\u201d in combat sports.
