In another setback for the British team, they have returned to their floor from the Japanese GP &#8211; deeming this specification better than their latest updates.<\/p>\n<h2>Still uncertainty about Aston Martin&#8217;s direction<\/h2>\n<p>At this stage of the 2023 season, <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2024\/10\/21\/aston-martin-insist-upgrades-have-done-what-we-expected\/\" target=\"_self\">Aston Martin<\/a> were essentially using any track time to experiments. They were testing different floor designs to determine their direction for this year&#8217;s campaign.<\/p>\n<p>In the first rounds of the season (Bahrain, Jeddah, China), the AMR24 showed potential.<\/p>\n<p>Alonso was consistently within four tenths of Pole Position, often fighting with the McLaren&#8217;s and <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2024\/10\/30\/toto-wolff-mercedes-may-have-to-compromise-rest-of-the-season\/\" target=\"_self\">Mercedes<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Although race pace was a point of weakness for Aston, there was at least signs of potential.<\/p>\n<p>However, this promise almost entirely evaporated at the Imola GP. Lawrence Stroll&#8217;s team brought a new floor specification which, like many of Aston&#8217;s upgrades, sent the team backwards.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"eUf3m83OSZdkmaPFP8izTg\" class=\"gie-single\" style=\"color: #a7a7a7; text-decoration: none; font-weight: normal !important; border: none; display: inline-block;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.gettyimages.com\/detail\/2181586131\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Embed from Getty Images<\/a><script>window.gie=window.gie||function(c){(gie.q=gie.q||[]).push(c)};gie(function(){gie.widgets.load({id:'eUf3m83OSZdkmaPFP8izTg',sig:'NPeF9PzbeHkZcgqVHUHB379jUG7HQTed0JlRg-qzOSg=',w:'594px',h:'396px',items:'2181586131',caption: true ,tld:'com',is360: false })});<\/script><script src='\/\/embed-cdn.gettyimages.com\/widgets.js' charset='utf-8' async><\/script><\/p>\n<h3>Back to the drawing board<\/h3>\n<p>In the six months since then, <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2024\/10\/18\/f1-news-aston-martin-reveal-big-upgrades-for-american-gp\/\" target=\"_self\">Aston Martin have failed to make any significant progress<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Despite testing a variety of different configurations, the AMR24 is no closer to fighting near fighting at the front.<\/p>\n<p>Because of this, the British team used last weekend&#8217;s Mexico GP as a testing opportunity. They used several floor specifications throughout the weekend, including the AMR24&#8217;s Japanese GP design.<\/p>\n<p>For this weekend&#8217;s Brazilian GP, Aston Martin have chosen to use their floor from Japan. The team determined that this floor &#8211; despite being one of their oldest &#8211; would deliver the best performance.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2024\/08\/26\/fernando-alonso-aston-martin-now-the-7th-fastest-team\/\" target=\"_self\">Fernando Alonso&#8217;s pace<\/a> from Free Practice at Interlagos, though insufficient to reach any conclusions, was encouraging.<\/p>\n<p>Regardless of whether the AMR24 is more competitive over the coming days, serious questions need to be asked about the team&#8217;s development.<\/p>\n<p>Aston Martin cannot say they have achieved any significant progress in the last twelve months &#8211; which does not bode well for their 2025 trajectory.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Aston Martin&#8217;s poor development has haunted them since the beginning of 2023.
