His first result after a year away from F1 (9th place, just ten seconds behind <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2024\/10\/20\/sergio-perez-i-dont-have-the-same-upgrades-as-verstappen\/\" target=\"_self\">Sergio Perez<\/a>), is a clear statement of intent. However, Lawson insists he is targeting consistent performances.<\/p>\n<h2>Red Bull pleased with first indications from Liam Lawson in COTA<\/h2>\n<p>When VCARB announced <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2024\/10\/18\/yuki-tsunoda-i-deserve-to-drive-for-red-bull\/\" target=\"_self\">Yuki Tsunoda<\/a> and Daniel Ricciardo as their 2024 line-up last season, there was widespread criticism.<\/p>\n<p>The decision to keep Lawson on the sidelines was widely described as a mistake, potentially hampering the progress someone whose debut performances indicated immense potential.<\/p>\n<p>Twelve months later, Lawson is already producing results that suggest Red Bull were too hesitant in giving him a chance.<\/p>\n<p>Still, thankfully for the Kiwi, the remainder of 2024 is not just about staying in F1. The defending Champions see him as a strong candidate to drive alongside <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2024\/10\/15\/max-verstappen-contract-has-performance-related-exit-clauses\/\" target=\"_self\">Max Verstappen<\/a> next season.<\/p>\n<h3>Lawson keeps a level head<\/h3>\n<p>Having put together a storming drive in COTA, Lawson received plenty of praise across the F1 paddock. This included the two people he wants to impress the most &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2024\/10\/12\/christian-horner-red-bull-wind-tunnel-has-its-limitations\/\" target=\"_self\">Christian Horner<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2024\/10\/22\/f1-news-sergio-perez-receives-red-bull-warning-about-his-future\/\" target=\"_self\">Helmut Marko<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>However, the 22-year-old refuses to get carried away after one weekend:<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;I spoke to Christian [Horner] and Helmut [Marko],&#8221; he told Sky F1.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a id=\"q6Q5P0DPSG9zQdP7-h8tXQ\" class=\"gie-single\" style=\"color: #a7a7a7; text-decoration: none; font-weight: normal !important; border: none; display: inline-block;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.gettyimages.com\/detail\/2179623676\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Embed from Getty Images<\/a><script>window.gie=window.gie||function(c){(gie.q=gie.q||[]).push(c)};gie(function(){gie.widgets.load({id:'q6Q5P0DPSG9zQdP7-h8tXQ',sig:'k9WF8vFZGH0RXi4OgV-cOXnN4iWYggXRwBjGXXF4TMQ=',w:'594px',h:'396px',items:'2179623676',caption: true ,tld:'com',is360: false })});<\/script><script src='\/\/embed-cdn.gettyimages.com\/widgets.js' charset='utf-8' async><\/script><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;They were positive, they said &#8216;well done&#8217;.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;But at the same time, that was the expectation they had on me.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;The goal every weekend is points. I know they have an expectation of me, but I have an expectation on myself as well to do a job&#8230;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;I&#8217;m aware of the expectation they have on me. But at the end of the day, it&#8217;s been the same since I was 16 years old as a junior.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;They&#8217;ve always put pressure on us. He was frustrated at himself for losing ground at the beginning of the race, due to a poor start procedure.<\/p>\n<p>Whilst only a small comment independently, Lawson regularly demonstrates the characteristics of someone capable of driving at the highest level.<\/p>\n<p>After a tough battle with <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2024\/09\/12\/fernando-alonso-i-will-be-driving-in-2026-and-beyond\/\" target=\"_self\">Fernando Alonso<\/a> in the Sprint race, he could have easily been tempted to make combative statements to the press. He resisted this, instead focusing on letting his driving to the talking.<\/p>\n<p>Yuki Tsunoda has been a high-performing driver for several years now, so Lawson being competitive immediately is a hugely impressive sign.<\/p>\n<p>With that said, as the Kiwi himself acknowledges, there is still plenty of racing to go.
