{"id":25637,"date":"2024-10-23T12:30:21","date_gmt":"2024-10-23T16:30:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/?p=25637"},"modified":"2024-10-23T12:53:53","modified_gmt":"2024-10-23T16:53:53","slug":"owards-career-and-rise-to-indy-stardom","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2024\/10\/23\/owards-career-and-rise-to-indy-stardom\/","title":{"rendered":"Pato Who?: O&#8217;Ward&#8217;s Career and Rise to Stardom"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>Fans will see a different but familiar face during F1\u2019s FP1 at the Mexico City Grand Prix as IndyCar star Pato O\u2019Ward takes the wheel of the MCL38 in front of his hometown fans.<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pato O\u2019Ward\u2019s career hasn\u2019t always been smooth sailing, especially in the early days but that clearly didn&#8217;t stop him as he gets to live out a childhood dream. A look at his career so far between both series might answer why he is one of the top NTT IndyCar Series drivers on the grid and how O&#8217;Ward&#8217;s appearance in the <\/span>Mexico GP was a long time coming.<\/p>\n<h2>What should\u2019ve been<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">O\u2019Ward\u2019s career could\u2019ve looked completely different if a controversial decision from the FIA hadn\u2019t been made.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2018, O&#8217;Ward signed with Andretti Autosport to compete in the Indy Lights championship. Winning nine out of 17 races, O\u2019Ward won the drivers championship at the second-last race of the season in Portland, beating runner-up, and fellow IndyCar driver Colton Herta.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The following year, he continued to make a huge step toward making his dream of making it to Formula 1 a reality by joining the Red Bull Junior Team. He managed to get in a race at Red Bull Ring in Formula 2 and three races of the Super Formula Championship as a replacement for other drivers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He was right there but a ruling by the FIA to allocate fewer <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2022\/10\/23\/sargeant-close-to-williams-seat-pending-super-licence\/\" target=\"_self\">Super License<\/a> points for O&#8217;Ward&#8217;s victory in the Indy Lights championship hindered his ability to secure the 40 necessary points to compete in Formula One in 2020.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Arrow McLaren\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">His release from Red Bull made him available for an IndyCar series ride with <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2022\/10\/05\/indycar-arrow-mclaren-sp-reveals-2023-roster\/\" target=\"_self\">Arrow McLaren<\/a> in 2020.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And as they say the rest is history.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prior to the contract, O\u2019Ward had appeared in eight IndyCar races, one in 2018 and eight in 2019, with two different teams. But this was his first opportunity for a full-time spot and boy did he take advantage of that. In his first full season he managed a pole, six top-5\u2019s and 10 top-10s finishing fourth in the championship standings with 416 points.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And he\u2019s only gotten better.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">O&#8217;Ward emerged as a title contender that following year. He earned his maiden IndyCar victory in the second race at the Texas Motor Speedway. He became the first Mexican driver to win an IndyCar race since Adrian Fernandez in 2004.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"2021 Race Radio \/\/ Pato O&#039;Ward Wins the XPEL 375\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/YsAoyUSVH70?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since then he has consistently been in the fight for the championship<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2024\/01\/10\/indycar-2024-team-analysis-arrow-mclaren\/\" target=\"_self\"> never finishing lower than fifth<\/a> behind the winner, aside from 2022 where he finished seventh. He has racked up seven wins, and 25 podiums and has finished 2nd in the Indy500 twice.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although he hasn&#8217;t been close to the title. With his talent, natural speed and cat like reflexes, he is bound to become an IndyCar Champion in the near.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>McLaren Racing\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Winning that first race in Texas helped advance O\u2019Ward\u2019s career because it granted his first taste of an F1 car after he made a deal with <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2024\/09\/11\/zak-brown-sits-down-with-dale-earnhardt-jr-talks-f1-indycar-daytona-500-and-more\/\" target=\"_self\">McLaren Racing CEO Zak Brown<\/a>. He managed to participate in several development tests in the team\u2019s 2021 car including the 2021 young driver test in Abu Dhabi and he also drove in FP1 at both the 2022 and 2023 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix weekends.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But all of those tests were just guest appearances, not as a reserve driver, because he wasn\u2019t eligible.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And that\u2019s due to the clear under-representation IndyCar has in the FIA points system. His 4th place finish in 2020 and 3rd place finish in 2021 earned him only 30 points and after a point-less 2022 season it seemed he would\u2019ve has to wait another year but thanks to a <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2022\/09\/20\/indycar-an-in-depth-look-at-the-2023-grid\/\" target=\"_self\">great 2023<\/a> and a COVID-19 rule he was finally able to be a part of the F1 reserve driver in 2024.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As part of F1\u2019s requirement to run a young driver in two FP1 sessions per season the Mexican driver was going to hop into the MCL38 at some point after the IndyCar season ended.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And in September it was<a  href=\"https:\/\/www.formula1.com\/en\/latest\/article\/indycar-star-and-mclaren-reserve-oward-to-drive-in-fp1-at-mexico-city-grand.66lCkXDJA7VTcddbXUxBY3\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> announced<\/a> that he would make an appearance in FP1 at the Mexico City Grand in front of his home crowd<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cI cannot wait, this really is a dream come true for me \u2013 being able to jump into an F1 car in front of my home crowd. I can\u2019t thank Andrea [Stella], Zak [Brown] \u2013 the whole team \u2013 enough for this amazing opportunity.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2><b>Stardom Called Into Question:<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>O&#8217;Ward&#8217;s popularity was questioned earlier this year when Penske Entertainment CEO Mark Miles informed IndyCar officials that neither the series nor O\u2019Ward had the appeal to attract a significant audience for a<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2024\/09\/05\/indycars-pato-oward-eyeing-nascar-mexico-city-race\/\" target=\"_self\"> race in Mexico<\/a>. Miles also noted that it was evident O\u2019Ward&#8217;s popularity was not as high as that of Fernandez.<\/p>\n<p>But that&#8217;s simply not true, take it from his former teammate Alexander Rossi.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Reasons I can think why <a  href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/PatricioOWard?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">@PatricioOWard<\/a> is actually as famous as he thinks he is while I\u2019m sitting on couch. <\/p>\n<p>1. Has fan bases so loud that when they chant we can\u2019t actually complete an engineering debrief. In Portland of all places.<\/p>\n<p>2. O&#8217;Ward boasts 711k on Instagram, surpassing IndyCar&#8217;s total\u00a0 of 682k followers. The support continues in person with sold out merch and meet and greet lines out the door. That&#8217;s the result of him working on building his personal brand and fanbase throughout the years.<\/p>\n<p>This participation of FP1 in Mexico is in front of his home crowd. This is a dream come true and vital moment in O&#8217;Ward&#8217;s career.
