His efforts were unsuccessful, likely because James Vowles&#8217; long-term plans involved a more ambitious target in Carlos Sainz. Despite this, another more viable opportunity has presented itself at Williams, and Mick Schumacher is eager to capitalise.<\/p>\n<p>Before discussing Schumacher&#8217;s Williams chances, it must be stressed that nothing is set in stone. <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2024\/08\/24\/logan-sargeant-on-thin-ice-as-williams-consider-mid-season-swap\/\" target=\"_self\">Logan Sargeant<\/a> hasn&#8217;t been replaced yet, even if all indicators suggest time is running out.<\/p>\n<p>Vowles is still evaluating the different paths available to him, and a final call hasn&#8217;t been made.<\/p>\n<p>With this disclaimer out of the way, Toto Wolff clearly senses an opening to get Mick Schumacher back on the grid &#8211; albeit for half a season.<\/p>\n<p>Having spent almost two years as a <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2024\/08\/26\/george-russell-concerned-after-mercedes-pace-disappeared\/\" target=\"_self\">Mercedes<\/a> reserve driver, Schumacher may never have a better chance to make an F1 comeback.<\/p>\n<h3>Wolff ready to capitalise on Williams opportunity<\/h3>\n<p>Speaking to the media in Zandvoort, Wolff made the case for the 25-year-old:<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;I would very much hope that Mick gets the chance because we haven\u2019t seen the real Mick.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;You\u2019re not winning F4, F3 and F2 and then you\u2019re not performing in F1\u2026 I think he deserves a chance.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a id=\"9erhNSJXQKhehwEUOuXtmw\" class=\"gie-single\" style=\"color: #a7a7a7; text-decoration: none; font-weight: normal !important; border: none; display: inline-block;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.gettyimages.com\/detail\/2167620363\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Embed from Getty Images<\/a><script>window.gie=window.gie||function(c){(gie.q=gie.q||[]).push(c)};gie(function(){gie.widgets.load({id:'9erhNSJXQKhehwEUOuXtmw',sig:'IQMc-0V_EoaI-tjJXb5_dOjNEkU_trRRaEovWmm22Zk=',w:'594px',h:'396px',items:'2167620363',caption: true ,tld:'com',is360: false })});<\/script><script src='\/\/embed-cdn.gettyimages.com\/widgets.js' charset='utf-8' async><\/script><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;If the opportunity would be at Williams it\u2019s something that we would be cheering for. But it\u2019s James Vowles\u2019 decision.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Provided that Vowles commits to a mid-season swap, Mick Schumacher is among a limited pool of readily available drivers.<\/p>\n<p>Given Mercedes&#8217;s obvious ties to Williams, it seems safe to assume the Silver Arrows will make their voices heard behind the scenes.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, this does not mean Williams are obliged to discard their own preferences for the sake of their engine suppliers.<\/p>\n<h3>Liam Lawson is still an obvious contender<\/h3>\n<p>The biggest threat to Schumacher&#8217;s hopes of an F1 comeback (and Logan Sargeant&#8217;s seat) is <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2024\/08\/25\/liam-lawson-being-considered-for-williams-loan-spell\/\" target=\"_self\">Liam Lawson<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It goes without saying that <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/motorsports\/2024\/08\/25\/schumacher-and-lawson-the-top-contenders-for-williams-seat\/\" target=\"_self\">Lawson&#8217;s substitute appearances<\/a> last year were hugely impressive. Williams could plausibly see the 22-year-old as their best option to reinforce Alex Albon for the rest of 2024.<\/p>\n<p>Red Bull are also open to sending him on loan to Williams.
