After spending two years away from the paddock, Mattia Binotto<\/a> returns to F1 in a key position. The former Ferrari boss must rise to the difficult task of leading Audi’s project. Alongside the recently signed Jonathan Wheatley<\/a>, Binotto will decide the team’s direction heading into 2026. The German manufacturer is pinning its hopes on Binotto’s engine expertise for the new regulations.<\/p>\n

“Full confidence” that Mattia Binotto can lead<\/h2>\n

The next eighteen months will be a transitional phase for F1. Next year will largely be a continuation of 2024, with the pecking order unlikely to change significantly over the winter.<\/p>\n

Most teams will divert their energy into the 2026 regulations rather than chasing diminishing returns with next season’s packages.<\/p>\n

For Audi<\/a>, there is additional pressure since they are making their debut as F1 engine manufacturers.<\/p>\n

Whilst their status as a manufacturer team makes their project more exciting, it also complicates matters for the team’s personnel.<\/p>\n

Alpine<\/a> are perhaps the most obvious example of how an engine program done ineffectively can be counter-productive.<\/p>\n

Sauber’s team representative, Alunni Bravi, has spoken in glowing terms about Binotto:<\/p>\n

“I think he’s very competent and has a very proven background,” <\/em>motorsport-total<\/a> quotes him as saying.<\/em><\/p>\n

“And I believe he has enormous competence, especially in the technical field.<\/em><\/p>\n

“The message is clear. He will lead Sauber Motorsport. He will bear full responsibility and accountability for the sporting success of the Audi factory team.<\/em><\/p>\n

“I think he has all the qualities to achieve this goal and lead our structure until 2026 and beyond.”<\/em><\/p>\n

Big decisions imminent for Sauber and Audi<\/h3>\n

However, infrastructure and engine development are not the only pressing matters for Audi.<\/p>\n

The team has yet to complete their 2025 line-up<\/a>, with Sauber still looking at potential teammates for Nico Hulkenberg.<\/p>\n

Gabriel Bortoleto<\/a> is seen as a strong candidate, although there is little clarity on who leads the team’s shortlist.<\/p>\n
